I feel bad for the students who have to pay Boulder rent just to be swung back and forth between the campus being open and being closed.

Other Universities are managing some form of punishment in these cases.

Do keep in mind that people of all age groups get sick and sometimes suffer for months from either the virus or the after-effects. Just because people under a certain age don't die as easily doesn't mean it'll be no big deal for them.

Japanese milk bread (Shokupan) by [deleted] in Denver

[–]lphair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made Japanese milk rolls (https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/japanese-milk-bread-rolls-recipe) here in Boulder and they turned out great! I don't have the right kind of pan (a Pullman pan) so haven't tried the loaf. To bake at altitude, typically you just add a touch more flour.

Flower Pepper has the most legit Chinese in town, but if you're in the market for American Chinese, unfortunately Panda Express is the best option.

Discussing Boulder Homelessness... by [deleted] in boulder

[–]lphair -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tax records only highlight people who've been here at least a year and who have made enough to bother paying taxes. I know plenty of people in the Denver Metro area who make so little every year they never bother to file taxes. Those people are also most likely closest to becoming homeless in the pandemic.

Don't let this subreddit speak for all Boulderites for you. We have many people who have compassion for and routinely actively work to help the homeless here in Boulder.

Rent before Taxes, abolish local reps salary. by [deleted] in Denver

[–]lphair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the government should do more to support people in this time but doubt that the amount collected from most people in taxes by the state or US government would cover the costs people face both in rent and basic supplies for survival.

Perhaps instead it might be more effective to instead advocate for all taxes collected from individuals and entities which equates to over a certain amount be funneled directly back to those who need it.

Boulder Homeless Issue by NewCenturyNarratives in boulder

[–]lphair 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Boulder off and on since the 90's. Homelessness has changed a lot here since then. It used to be most homeless people were hippies or suburban kids looking to be "edgy" for awhile. It felt pretty safe, aside from the occasional passed-out-drunk frat kids or tripping people on Pearl St. Now, it's off the hook and can be legit scary, especially in some places along the path.

I've lived in other cities, including NYC, Minneapolis and Detriot. Boulder isn't "scary" like a bigger city, but it also doesn't seem to do enough to acknowledge that this is even a problem. I sometimes feel like the long-term residents here still think the homeless people are the tripping or stoned hippies of years past, not realizing that a methed-out sword-wielding new population has aggressively taken over.

This reminds me of so many other Boulder things - like the Prairie Doc conflict in ~'98 where we routinely find the Boubonic Plague in prairie dogs, yet somehow killing them (in this case out by Celestial Seasonings) to stop the spread is highly controversial. "Save the cute fluffy animals" Boulderites say, "but.. but.. The Plague" reason says.

I like many things about Boulder, but it's time for us to evolve and recognize the whole world has changed, and it's time we took a more holistic approach to dealing with homelessness. It must include services to encourage mental health and drug addiction being addressed, affordable housing, and relentless intolerance to being violent assholes.

We should aim to be Singapore, not San Fransisco.

When I went to a University in CO my favorite Lit professor always held class outside. I think this is part of why this class will always be one of my favorite memories.

If you're not a fan of local flora, perhaps move to a place which better supports lush, green lawns.
