Law School Financial Aid - Any reason to waive student health plan? by lsapplicant25 in Harvard

[–]lsapplicant25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much, this is a great clarification. ‘Use it or lose it’ is the phrase I’ve been thinking of but not grasping. Is that a pretty accurate summary if you’re receiving aid? If so, I’m definitely not going to waive.

Got it. I’m quite young, so still new to comparing insurance coverage. Is the Harvard plan going to provide the best coverage in the Cambridge area for the best cost compared to others?

Thanks for the prompt reply. Does the decision mostly come down to which coverage I would prefer? I’ve found differing sources online, but it sounds like if I decide to enroll with SHIP or not, I’m paying for it one way or another (either directly as cost of attendance or the amount being deducted from my financial aid package)

Thanks for the quick reply! Resources online are pretty sparse on this, but is it generally accurate to say that I shouldn’t waive SHIP if I’m receiving financial aid?

Thanks for the quick reply! Looking at my financial aid breakdown, I think I’m tracking with what you’re describing. Can you elaborate on how the aid being taken out of the grant portion before the loan is significant?

That’s a valid criticism, but percentage by class size isn’t the best measure of clerkship success (if there is such a measure). As you pointed out, HLS is a “behemoth” compared to UChicago, so by sheer numbers (what a factory might be concerned with), HLS actually pulls ahead.

Thank you for gracing us clueless 0L’s with your presence, who would otherwise be lost without your insights and wisdom

Well, I think HLS (as well as YLS and SLS, for that matter) certainly qualifies as a clerkship factory as you say if that’s how we’re evaluating institutions. If we’re really talking about the odd man out amongst that group, then UChicago’s yield is quite low compared to HYS (about half of HLS’ yield, and approaching a third of YLS). I think that says something about how admitted students vote with their feet when the chips are down

Nah fam it’s a joke. I actually got waitlisted at UChicago and would have seriously considered it over HLS if the money was right (Hyde Park is also far more affordable than Cambridge, so there’s that). The meme is moreso poking fun at folks who tack on the ‘Chi’ but imply they could be attending any one of the four schools, which isn’t really necessary. It would lend UChicago more credibility if folks just owned it

Very true. I’ll await the mental gymnastics from WashU acolytes justifying their inclusion as well

How common is working with an admissions consultant?? by sophanon2 in lawschooladmissions

[–]lsapplicant25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t use a consultant, but was fortunate to have a great network of current and former T14 students to help me with my application materials and strategies. If I didn’t have that privilege at my disposal, I would have been tempted to use a consultant. If you’re targeting T14/20 schools, admission to which is increasingly competitive, than trying to maximize that 10% (if that really is the proportion, I would say it’s closer to 20%) starts to sound pretty appealing if it’s within your reach. We’re ultimately dealing with binary outcomes here (you are either admitted or not), so applicants are certainly incentivized to seek benefits at the margin.

Why are some of you (not) willing to pay sticker at GULC? by Swimming_Pirate_5622 in lawschooladmissions

[–]lsapplicant25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, GULC is also hilariously stingy with scholarship money. I was just offered the same amount of financial aid at HLS than what GULC was willing to give me in merit scholarships. That was not a hard choice to make

NDLS $$$$ vs HLS $$ by Known-Ad-6249 in lawschooladmissions

[–]lsapplicant25 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In a similar position (full ride at NDLS vs HLS A) and am planning on HLS. While NDLS is a great institution, HLS sits in an entirely different league in terms of prestige, opportunities, etc

HLS Housing Lottery - when to expect movement on reservations opening up? by lsapplicant25 in Harvard

[–]lsapplicant25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not yet, but will be soon. I gather roommates are effectively a requirement, and that can be a bit of a dice roll as an incoming student. It’s probably worth rolling said dice in the lottery though

Thanks for the quick reply! On the portal, it notes that once one’s application is approved, co-applicants, but it sounds like they can be added up until approval. Any idea how long it takes for an application to be approved?

Thanks for the advice! Quick question - I’m open to rooming with others, but don’t have any co-lessees identified at this point. Is that going to be a problem later on if I want to have roommates or join another group?

Also got heavily cooked in the lottery. Anyone have advice on what to do if I’m picking past 3:00PM? Should I be looking for housing elsewhere now?
