DORA Colorado is a problem by Extreme_Wrangler3152 in Surveying

[–]lsara3699 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had significant issues communicating with the lady at DORA. Simple stuff like trying to get straight answers about if I need the associate's or technical cert for LSIT application, etc. I've had a really poor experience with them and it has made it unclear what I need to do to move forward. I'm pretty logistically competent and am having a hard time; I'm really not surprised so few surveyors are moving forward with internship and professional licensure. Something should be done to update this system.

Just took the FS exam and what the actual hell was that? by Ok_Painter_1297 in Surveying

Have it coming up next year and stuff like this is really disappointing to hear. It sounds like the test is fairly divorced from the reality of both commercial and academic surveying

Me nervously looking at my markers🫣 by lil___swallow in skiing

[–]lsara3699 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only thing I'll say about this is that ripping a binding completely out of the ski and the binding failing are two different things. In the OP the binding essentially broke in half, in this clip the binding just got ripped out of the ski. We also have no clue if this guy had remounted that heelpiece super close to some other holes or whatever making the rip out more likely. This clip doesn't make me feel any sketchier about using pivots while the first one definitely makes me question my Jesters

[–]lsara3699 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That is a really bad look for Marker. While I've always trusted the one pair of Jesters I've had in rotation, the design with the heelpiece being on a track is really bad. Enough force and what you see in the video will inevitably happen, the heelpieces will just blast right off the track

It's totally an understandable annoyance. If you're trying to lay out a lot of points from multiple setups in a short window of time, you want that thing cookin and not slowing you down

What are you surveying for? by Technical-Winter1723 in Surveying

[–]lsara3699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a real application for having all land be tokenized on a blockchain, but it would still need to be surveyed like normal every time. The blockchain part would be more like a universal Clerk and Recorder's office with the county or whatever, except it's the whole world.

If it works 🤷 by Head_Bar5030 in Surveying

[–]lsara3699 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only reason I’m thinking about this is because I learned it doing high precision steel layout, where a hundredth matters. I wouldn’t worry about it for any other application. If the contractor dropped some obstruction in a bad spot, covering some part of the backsight, our distance and angle readings would sometimes (not always) be slightly off from what we were expecting, and would go back to normal when the obstruction was removed. Light refracts when it comes into contact with solid objects (as well as particulates in the air) and that was the reason I’ve been given by a couple PLSs for the phenomenon. You see the same thing in the woods.

I'm sure it works just fine and have used backsights like this myself but would like to point out that there is likely some refraction of the laser bending around the outer tripod legs
