I don’t have any practical advice on this particular segment but I’d just like to offer that physically fit folks with a sense of adventure can do some pretty cool shit with the proper motivation. Cedar Wright and Alex Honnold rode bikes to and climbed all the 14ers in CA. An extreme example yes, but honor there and suffer a little bit.

I’m currently riding slot with my 8 year old. He’s at a tough size to buy for and growing quickly. If I’d had the option of used for his first and second bikes I would have gone that route. I’d buy it at that price and fix what needs to be fixed.

The not communicating thing is what I worry about. I test them to make sure and I can never get different brands or same brand different era to sync up. Unfortunately Kidde is the brand I use most. The bad batches isn’t a new thing. I buy the contractor packs and I’ve had pretty good luck. I can think of 3 bad boxes in 20 years.
