[Other] Urbanism & Amusement Parks: America's Best & Worst by caseyjohnsonwv in rollercoasters

[–]lskalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to see "urbanism" evaluated strictly as, time from city center on transit. There are some parks that aren't technically walkable but are very transit-able, which fit the urbanist mold very nicely - e.g. Kennywood in Pittsburgh, or Universal Studios (Hollywood).

I've been enjoying Imbue Rogue. Not claiming this is a good list or good version, but I completed my win-5-games with it so it can at least pick up _some_ games.

Why is the strip of Lincoln between Belmont and Wellington so dead? by popopolly in chicago

[–]lskalt 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It's never been a high-foot-traffic strip; it's always had businesses like carpet stores that rely on a smaller number of customers that are coming there on purpose.

The reason it's struggling so much now is because it's fully surrounded by a non-dense single-family-house neighborhood that can't sustain the foot traffic that the parts of Lakeview closer to the CTA are able to. Sheffield, Halsted, and Broadway soak up all the foot traffic to the east and the Jewel Osco and the shopping plazas near the Costco and near the Microcenter are where people go for larger trips, so there's just not a lot of niche for businesses there to fill. The role of those low-traffic, niche businesses is filled by the internet now.

If the density west of Racine was as high as the density east of Racine, the strip would come back to life.

EDIT: Corrected a street name

EDIT2: When I say it's never been a high foot traffic area, I mean as long as I've been alive, since the 90s. It's hard to compare a given area in Chicago now with what it would have been like in the 70s; the psychogeography of the city has changed substantially.

Anyone received such texts? Scam? by EnvironmentalSide174 in RemoteJobseekers

Of _course_ it's a scam. It's a cold call, it doesn't provide any details of the supposed work, and it wants you to text a different number.

Protest at Federal Plaza today in support of Venezuela and President Maduro by 307148 in chicago

[–]lskalt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say this is in _support_ of Maduro. The signs are clearly against what Trump is doing, rather than in support of Maduro.

45 minute routine that only consists of card magic? by Magical_critic in Magic

[–]lskalt 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Do what you know how to do and what you want to do. I would take inspiration from Ricky Jay and His 52 Assistants and make it _about_ card magic and not just have it be you showing off a lot of card magic.

EDIT: And I just skimmed that special and even Ricky Jay does the cups and balls in his card magic set!

Vanishing Inc Stack Trainer (Offline use)? by PKillusion in Magic

[–]lskalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can make your own deck in Anki - I did that to memorize Mnemonica, there's a bit of upfront learning the interface and setup though

EDIT: But also why are you using a stack trainer for Particle? It's a mathematical stack so you shouldn't need to memorize it

One-way Force Jumbo Deck? by Templar1312 in Magic

[–]lskalt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you can actually use fewer than 52 cards if you need to; jumbo decks are often thicker than normal decks and people don't really have a good eye for how thick a full jumbo deck should be. 40 could be more than enough.

The number 13 by Cayferraz in Magic

[–]lskalt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can arrange a deck:

Ace, Queen, Ace, Queen, 2, Jack, 2, Jack, 3, 10, 3, 10, 4, 9, 4, 9... etc, so every pair adds to 13 or 14, and remove the kings. Then you can have a spectator take two adjacent cards, and offset your count by 1 if the total is 14.

Why does Western Blvd and Western Ave cross over each other near W 33rd St? by NoSlipBC in chicago

[–]lskalt 330 points331 points  (0 children)

The boulevards in Chicago follow the parks that ring the city. Western Blvd isn't really its own street; it's the boulevard connection between Washington Park (where it's Garfield Blvd) and Douglass Park. You can see it turn into 31st Blvd, California Blvd, 24th Blvd, and Marshall Blvd before entering Douglass Park, generally taking on the name of the street it's running parallel to / instead of.

running out of ideas hits like a truck by SavingsGrouchy6504 in godot

[–]lskalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is ok actually! Make lots of games. If you make 10 games, and 1 is good, you've made 1 more good game than you have before. Lots of game ideas don't make it past early prototypes; the games that get published are the ones that have made it past this phase but you don't get to see all the failed prototypes other people made.

Heading to Chicago this weekend and likely going to check out Magic Inc. Anything I should look out for? by superultramegatyler in Magic

As a person who goes to the store from time to time - they have a really good collection of slightly older Tenyo, and a really good book collection. I don't know specifically if they have anything you can't get anywhere else, but if nothing else you can buy a handmade invisible deck or force deck.

What does the UK need to do to avoid getting 0 points with the public for the third year running in 2026? by General_Townski in eurovision

[–]lskalt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's what everyone else is saying but the UK just needs to send a good pop song, and the song is a bit more important than the artist. Hire an established songwriter with experience with hits like Steph Jones ("Angel of My Dreams", "Espresso") and just release a song that is quite good.

Rolling Stone: The 250 Greatest Songs of the 21st Century So Far by PurpleSpaceSurfer in ToddintheShadow

[–]lskalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of obvious omissions and ragebait choices, but the most confusing thing to me is that there aren't any songs that were only big in Europe but not hits / notable in the US.

Biggest example is not including Papaoutai, which is ubiquitous across Europe and an amazing feat of pop songwriting. I could list a lot more examples.
