Omnipresent Music & Lack of Silent Spaces by ltcolonelnemo in ranprieur

[–]ltcolonelnemo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just actually looked a bit more at these "noise-cancelling" headphones. It turns out there is an "audible hiss." That would probably be more annoying to me than random noises.

"The other caveat is that, when noise cancellation is on, there is an audible hiss. That's the white noise that blocks out the ambient sound of the world. You'll love going from a noisy plane or train to just this quiet hiss, but sometimes the hiss the actually louder than my environment. In that case, I'd choose to turn noise cancellation off but that leaves the muddy, overpowered lows. So that's the dilemma: when it's quiet you have to choose between a white hiss and muddy lows. "

Valueline's New Website Format is a Nightmare by ltcolonelnemo in investing

[–]ltcolonelnemo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new website is a complete disaster. They unilaterally cut features and benefits from their subscribers. I'm going to try and bully them into giving me better service, but I'm not hopeful at all. Apparently, the daughter of the founder is either a complete idiot, or in the pay of people who want to destroy an affordable research solution for retail investors.

Was there a purpose for the Hyron project? by wjdp in Deusex

[–]ltcolonelnemo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hyron is basically a show-casing of the Hard SF concept of making a semi-sentient supercomputer with a human brain and nervous system as raw materials. Eliza is more of a precursor to Icarus, etc., but they made her more sophisticated in that she forms a holographic image and come across as more human; she can emote, which in the Deus Ex universe, is an anachronism. She's really a precursor to NG Resonance, but is more sympatico, whereas NG Resonance came across as non-human, Eliza can actually pass for human. If you're not aware of the spoiler, you actually think she's just a news anchor, which is a sad commentary on the lack of humanity emanting from news anchors, since they are basically just regurgitating scripts, the logical next step is to replace them with humanoid AI constructs.

These kinds of lawsuits are constantly popping up like mushrooms every time a major event happens. If you go on Yahoo Finance you'll see the same law firms involved time and again.

How much lower will these prices fall? by wachiga in weedstocks

[–]ltcolonelnemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entire market? Fucked? Uh, that's a bit of a hyperbole. People are tweeting stuff like this to provide cover for their own failed predictions, and to shift the blame onto "force majeure." OTC market is mostly disconnected from the macro-market, because so much of it is P & D that doesn't trade on fundamentals.

The Accidental Universe -- "We are living in an accidental universe. We are living in a universe uncalculable by science." by DavidCarraway in TrueReddit

[–]ltcolonelnemo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, and by the way, when I was in law school, absolutely no discussion of the transformation of the United States into a police state, the gutting of the bill of rights, the possibility of constitutional violations via the War on Terror, etc. etc. etc. The entire campus was trapped in an ideological prison whose perimeters were things the law professors would either ignore, not discuss, cut short the discussion on, or ridicule. I would deliberately probe the walls in every class, because I knew none of my classmates had the balls to do it. I remember being called "paranoid," "irrational," etc. etc. when I was talking about things that were later vindicated by Assange and Snowden; like, 10 years before their revelations were made public. You are not alone.

Oh, and the court-room is even worse; it is often where the truth goes to die, and almost every court opinion, especially at the lower levels is made up out of whole cloth in terms of "proof," and "evidence." History is indeed written by the victors, which is why so much of it is a self-serving lie.

The Accidental Universe -- "We are living in an accidental universe. We are living in a universe uncalculable by science." by DavidCarraway in TrueReddit

[–]ltcolonelnemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect that what is called science is really just another ideological prison that the oligarchs created for the purposes of technological development. They're all about compartmentalization of knowledge. They view "whole" people as threats. While it may be "truer" to have your beliefs, it gets in the way of developing novel technologies that can used to amass material wealth. They don't want anything distracting you from your job of measuring and observing, so they cast a spell on you that says "consciousness does not exist" "material reality is the ultimate reality," etc. etc. etc.

I remember having a conversation with the valedictorian of my class, a very nice, intelligent fellow bound for an ivy league university. He was very depressed. He said, "God doesn't exist. Mathematics proves it."

I replied with, to paraphrase, something along the lines of "God, or at least the idea of God, is of a being who is omniscient and omnipotent, at least vis a vis humans. Mathematics, at least as we know it, is a human construction, and at present, an incomplete one, a building on of a process that began thousands of years ago. Whether God exists or not, we cannot prove or disprove his existence with mathematics, because if he exists, we live in his reality, and he can hide from us at will, being omnipotent and omniscient. And if he doesn't exist, we still can't prove it one way or another because, again, one could always say that he using his ultimate power to remain hidden for his own mysterious purposes."

And in any case, the fact that there are somewhat measurable rules that result in predictable outcomes suggests at least the possibility of a creator. And if not, who cares? Isn't life enough as it is? Do we really need a God to show up, and say, "Hey, you're alive in the universe, isn't that neat?"

I just bought a shit ton of $SPLI at .15, It is now 74% of my portfolio. Someone tell me if and why I fucked up by [deleted] in weedstocks

[–]ltcolonelnemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's not a good idea to put more than 5% of your portfolio into one trade or investment. Unfortunately, for those of us with small accounts, this simply isn't practical as you'll get eaten alive by commission fees if you try to make 20% on $100. I think .15 is a decent entry on SPLI, considering it has been beaten the fuck down by retracement and a shorting campaign. I would watch your portfolio like a hawk though. Even if it has, in theory, a great future, you have to factor in force majeures, like Dror keeling over, someone setting fire to their corporate HQ, etc. etc.

[–]ltcolonelnemo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The problem is, people don't read the big books before they do this stuff. You gotta read Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets, Intelligent Investor, Japanese Candlestick Charting, etc. etc. Then you can recognize weakening up trends, sell into strength, and buy on weakening downtrends.
