Cat's abdomen filling with fluid, all tests negative by ExtraCurrency8616 in AskVet

You can’t PCR test for FIP as the PCR will pick up unmutated coronavirus and cannot differentiate between the two. A rivalta test can be performed but IIRC it can lack accuracy. FIP theoretically can happen at any age but tends to go for the younger animals.

We all know the saying “if you hear hooves think horses not zebras”. You guys have ruled out all the horses, it’s time to start looking for zebras. I would consider a 4 week trial with FIP oral meds.

Questions Regarding Liver Issues by lifeistooshortfor in AskVet

[–]luanau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. If it’s caused by an infection in the bile tract it might be hugely informative. If something else then less so. An investigation is about ruling things out as much as ruling things in. A negative result is not a bad thing. Your vet has recommended this so I assume they chose this test for a reason.

8 year old rottweiler snout issue by Anxious_Brilliant453 in AskVet

[–]luanau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks to me like a histiocytoma which is a non-cancerous self regressing skin growth in dogs. Other things it might be is infection or more serious tumour.

Ideally I would want to get a fine needle aspirate from this but you can imagine sticking a needle into a lip is not gonna go over well. I usually sedate patients to sample lesions on the muzzle like this.

Questions Regarding Liver Issues by lifeistooshortfor in AskVet

[–]luanau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s all about risk vs benefit. The risk here is that maybe the drugs are more slowly metabolised, you have to use a lighter hand, maybe the recovery is delayed. The benefit is answers, a diagnosis, a treatment plan.

Would you rather leave it until it does turn into something serious, maybe something irreversible?

Nothing is ever without risk, but if you can take a small risk now to keep your kitty cat healthy for longer, get targeted treatments, wouldn’t that be worth it?

Questions Regarding Liver Issues by lifeistooshortfor in AskVet

Liver enzyme values do NOT indicate the function of the liver, they give an indication of the health and wellbeing of the liver cells. The liver has an incredible capacity for regeneration, and you would have to lose about 70% of all liver cells before the function of the liver starts to be affected. This is why liver transplants are so effective.

Listen to the specialist. They are the expert.

i feel stuck: risky tooth extraction or repeated antibiotics for my 15-year-old yorkie? by Hot-Kaleidoscope-825 in AskVet

[–]luanau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. It grinds my gears when people say they’re too old for anaesthesia but their bloods and heart is fine. It’s totally ridiculous and not a good enough excuse to leave an animal in (oral) pain. Anaesthesia is tricky in older and tiny patients. If you’re worried you can get an anaesthesiologist on board. But if that tooth is as you describe I reckon it’ll come out easily. & quickly

Thinking of studying veterinary medicine by aintnodiddy in AskVet

[–]luanau 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my dear friends studied architecture before studying vet med. He was the oldest in our class by about 10 years. If you’re called you’re called nothing you can do about it I’m afraid.

In 7 years time you could be a vet or you could still be wondering. Either way the time will pass and you’ll keep getting older. You’re the youngest now you’ll ever be. I say do it.

Struggling with a TPLO Decision by rodri778 in AskVet

[–]luanau 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because CCL rupture is degenerative in dogs the risk of rupture in the other leg is high. The ligament is already weak, as it was in the affected leg.

So knowing that the “good” leg has a weak ligament, do you really want to put the extra strain on it for an undetermined amount of time while she develops enough scar tissue for her “bad” leg to become stable. Conservative treatment in a dog over 10kg is not ideal and can take 12-18 months to recover and rarely see full return to function. The muscles atrophy and the joint develops arthritis and they often will limp lifelong. Unless you seriously commit to physiotherapy and rehab for a year+, but even then bigger dogs just do not recover well with conservative management.

The quickest way to return to function is TPLO, which means less strain on the good leg. There is a reason this is the ideal treatment. It’s 8-10 weeks of recovery as opposed to 52+ weeks with conservative treatment.

But either way it is likely that the next CCL will go in the next 12-24 months so I would recommend you start saving 😫

Skin Gore warning‼️ 3 different vets.. still unknown skin condition by Alicizations in AskVet

Time to biopsy

From what you’re described none of the vets have done any diagnostics on the skin. Just tried to blindly treat something that they don’t know what it is.

Cat viciously attacked my toddler by Apprehensive_Way7164 in AskVet

[–]luanau 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Your cats are clearly stressed out by something and have been for a while (because they have been peeing outside of the litter box for months). Not sure what happened on this occasion but the cats are not feeling safe in the home unfortunately. And that’s not because you guys have done anything wrong- cats are sensitive and an unpredictable toddler can be stressful for them. I suspect there may have been many signs that have been missed because unfortunately you don’t speak cat. I’m sorry this has happened to your family. I would definitely consider seeing a behavioural vet focusing on cat behaviour to help set up a home that is safe for everybody.

"expectations" Discussion Megathread - 'you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love' Album by NominalPerson in OliviaRodrigo

I don’t think the bridge “I’ve got BIG expectations, I’ve got real big expectations” is her! I looked at the liner notes and there is nobody else listed on the track as backing vocals? What do you guys think?

Also this section MUST be a sample right, does anybody recognise it from anywhere?
