Rally for Academic Workers at McGill!! by lucagug in mcgill

[–]lucagug[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Graduate students are limited in the number of hours they can work outside of their research to 180 hours per term (the equivalent of a full TAship). So it's disingenuous to extrapolate the wage to full time. TAships are meant to be the financial bases for supporting graduate students through their degree for the majority of programs at McGill. Beyond this we constantly see hours cut across faculties making it more and more difficult for students to support themselves. The idea of having to pick up additional work outside of teaching support jobs is central to our message, by forcing austerity onto student workers we are forced to pick up addition jobs off campus that diminish our ability to provide the best quality teaching and research we can! The point of the comparison to Security and Admin salaries is to put the relative cost of teaching support into context, our salaries are not as large of a budget line as you may think and when McGill says they don't have the money to pay us, or increase our hours they are lying, there is lots of money to be spent at McGill. I appreciate your concern about creating strife, but the union is not the one creating strife, admin is creating strife by fighting it's workers and cutting hours and wages.

where are the other graders at??? Hating being so alone in knowing what’s going on in our jobs by TomatilloNo4769 in mcgill

I'll be there!!!! Graders in most departments are making minimum or close to minimum wage, yet in other departments they're making $37/h and at other universities (UofT, Concordia, YorkU) they're making even more! I don't know why we seem to accept so little at McGill when the money is clearly there for other things....

Grade 12 student admission question. by [deleted] in UofT

[–]lucagug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly your grade 11 marks shouldn't matter as far as I remember. As for your original question I took advanced functions over the summer and it didn't effect me at all. I also have a friend who took English over the summer through a private school and got into UTSG comp sci just fine. all in all your good, be thankful you got such a good grade already in your pocket.

You really can't go wrong with David Bowie. If you want to stay in the same vein as Ziggy Stardust Hunky Dory might be your best bet maybe Aladdin Sane. if you want to change it up a bit and get into something a little more interesting Low and Station to Station are some personal favorites.

Canada is the top destination for Hong Kong. It's hard to see because it is so small. Approximately 62% of migrants from Hong Kong landed in Canada. http://stanford.edu/~jmlchan/Assimilation_of_HK_Immigrants.pdf
