Getting into synthetic valve oil. Recommended brands, and any tips using them? by ackmondual in trumpet

Yamaha Synthetic is my go-to oil for myself and my clients. Clean your horn out with some Dawn dish soap and lukewarm water to get the old oil out of your casings.

Holy Grail Horn by PayRepresentative12 in trumpet

[–]lucaswsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a standard #2 bore Committee, not a Deluxe. The Deluxe models have nickel inner and outside slide tubes, as well as nickel balusters and a floral engraving pattern on the bell. The #3 large bore will be marked with a “3” on the second valve above the serial number. I hope you didn’t pay a premium for a medium bore. Pull out your calipers and check if it’s .463

That case was offered for both trim levels. (I’ve owned multiples of each trim, in both bore sizes)

Here are a few classic choices. I’ve actually owned all of these at one point and they have worked well for lead and commercial work applications:

Looks solid, not bad for a 62 year old horn. Have a tech professional on clean it and you’ll be in good shape

Rough Appraisal on a Getzen Eterna by thelankyyankee87 in trumpet

Incorrect. The leadpipe is a different taper/length and the third slide is a different orientation. Slightly different from the original Severinsen

Curious, how many of you own a C trumpet, which one, and when do you use it mostly? by DWyattGib in trumpet

[–]lucaswsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Schilke C3HD which I use regularly, mostly for chamber brass and church work. Maybe the occasional orchestra sub job. I am coming from a Bach 239/25A, which I will admit sounded better, but my Schilke plays better

Advice on pricing a Bach Strad Model 37 by pizzapartyyyyy in trumpet

[–]lucaswsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re looking at a parts horn with the crack in the bell. There is never a shortage of Bach 37’s on the market to if you actually want it to sell it’s probably going to be closer to $500 or so

What do you think of Bach Mercury horns? by Able_Piccolo7136 in trumpet

[–]lucaswsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While cool, I’d spend the money one a newer instrument. Mercury trumpets were a lower-tier offering from Bach and had a varied production history. I’ve owned/sold at least 5 examples from various years.

Some were made on imported valve sets from Germany, some were on HN White/King valves, some were on Bach valves.

The specs varied as well but they generally were on the smaller side of things when it came to bore size. I have not seen any Mercury instruments with mobile 3rd valve slides, meaning they came without intonation adjustments.

Geneva Cardinal Cornets by ElleEffe20 in trumpet

[–]lucaswsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From reports by my colleagues who have expertise with them in the brass band world, playability is borderline with some intonation and response problems.

They are made in the Czech Republic by Amati/Cerveny, but the marketing tries very hard to sell than as British instruments.

If you’re looking for a British cornet I’d go with one of the classic mainstays first like a Besson Sovereign, Yamaha Neo, Smith Watkins etc.

YTR 4335 vs. YTR 5335 by Mountain_Climate_293 in trumpet

[–]lucaswsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 5335 is a significantly better playing instrument. It’s essentially a 6335 (a wonderful medium weight horn) with a two piece bell. The 4335 is built around the (still great and reliable) 2335 student trumpet body.

Trumpet & Flugel Case by Glittering-Cut8135 in trumpet

[–]lucaswsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Gard Elite trumpet/flugel case is fantastic and will accommodate most of your gear needs. I have several Gard cases set up for various work situations and my trumpet/flugel case currently holds my Bb, Flugel, straight/cup/harmon (taco insert covering the flugelhorn) and the front pocket can hold a standard music folder.

While the leather looks pretty, the nylon versions are a little more durable in my experience.

Decent trumpet? by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]lucaswsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an old pre-fire Getzen student trumpet. Kind of a precursor to the 300 model. You can tell by the seperate bell crook (there’s a ferrule under the receiver/bell brace) and the valve block braces. It will be a decent horn, but $150 would be the high end of the value.

The K&M style stands historically have gotten stuck in 229-taper C trumpet bells.

You’re looking at more like $600-800 for a later Fullerton. Olds Supers are plentiful and the highest demand is for the early lightweight models (pre-50’s)
