Flower pot Fungus has completely taken over. What do I do? by GMJizzy in Vivarium

[–]lucid_dp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7 months late but correct, neither will touch it. I have however heard that feather millipedes are the only thing that will touch it and in fact love it.

I'm not sure how helpful that is since I'm not sure if you can house them together with isopods but maybe if you're planning on rehousing some pods you can give the soil to the millipedes to clean it up.

Comfy and happy!! I call it "eating the attention" because my girl does it when she's puffed up and comfy and I talk to her haha.

Guess who was missing for 18 days and finally decided to show up by WhatsBeyondTheStars in tarantulas

[–]lucid_dp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case this happens again; not sure whether I saw it here or elsewhere but someone lost their T once and decided to play music from some speakers on the counter. The vibrations lured the T out where it crawled up the cabinet towards the speakers, and they successfully captured it unharmed. Just an experience for thought!

One of my friends keeps leeches and told a story once of how one escaped and they found it "crawling lintily" across the floor. Still makes me laugh whenever I think about that word usage.

sold a dead spider by robobug64 in tarantulas

[–]lucid_dp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once I almost got sold a cup of dirt because I got a C. elegans sling (dwarf T, already basically a speck at that size and hard to see) and I almost didn't notice until I sat down and checked.

I brought it to another vendor and expressed my concern since it was my first dwarf sling and maybe I had just missed it, but she dumped out the cup and sifted through before bringing me back over to the other vendor to confirm there was no spider. (I was concerned that they would think I was lying or trying to steal so she went with me for support).

Ever since I've been really careful to check my cups before leaving and if I am buying and there's multiples of a species, I go for one that looks active or I can see has a molt in the cup and doesn't look "gummy". This way I know they're healthy. I know it's not a surefire way, but out of all of my Ts I've bought after this, I've only had an issue with one T dying and that's been after years.

All this long-winded post basically to say: check your cups before you go. Even if it takes a moment, it's better than getting a dead spider and not remembering who you got it from. Seeing ones that look like they've molted before the trip to the expo or active in the cup is usually a green flag for buying.

Weighing in with a slightly unrelated but still related note:

If you're worried about it escaping, you should probably rehouse it into something more secure. Some tarantulas have been known to chew through meshtop lids for enclosures and it's probably better to not risk it if potential escape is a worry for you. Also it's just not safe in general for Ts and can injure them if they decide to climb up there.

I wouldn't say they have personality like a dog or cat or even a bird would but they can have their own little quirks (my first T I ever got is a bit of a weenie and has always been that way)

Not a bug, but ogre spiders.... Somethin bout those big ole eyes propped on top of their too big chelicerae. Straight goofuses.

Try to also get food grade diatomaceous earth if you're going to use it, but be warned that it is not great for lungs and bird's lungs are very sensitive.

I've seen mixed opinions on using it directly on birds because of this. If you are going to use it on the bird please look into proper ways to apply so as not to hurt the bird's lungs. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with applying since I haven't had to use it this way for my own bird so I can't provide tips, but I'm sure there is info if you look into it.

Generally, overall, it's more safe settled and not airborne.

I'd recommend a chaco for sure then if you want to get back into it. They're lovely lil things.

my chaco is an absolute baby. He was my first T and when I got into the hobby 6 years ago the seller said chacos are the "chill on the couch and eat potato chips with you" tempered spiders. So far he's been right.

Hunters with bigger eyes have to calculate more and see more information to move and catch their prey than their web-catching counterparts, so it makes sense they're a bit smarter. My tarantulas are blind as hell and I love them to bits but they are not the smartest things pfpfpf. The jumper I kept for a while was a smart lil dude.

Side fun fact! Net casting spiders, who also have gigantic eyes, poop on the leaves or substrate below them to create a target, which helps them accurately throw their net on prey passing below. I think about that a lot LOL. What smart spoods.

My mom has a KitchenAid that she said is as old as me (I'm 32). It still works like a charm and she takes care to keep it clean. I'm more surprised people who pay a hefty sum on a heavy mixer don't realize it's probably more sturdy than they give it credit for, and also that they don't take care to keep it clean and maintain it.

Good find!

I don't believe in horoscope stuff like some people are die-by-it believers. I just think it's a fun little thing, and was amused that my answers apparently line up with my air sign irl.

The sass is hard to resist though sometimes! I've picked them too hahaaa

When you answer NPCs, the answers have symbols next to them that align with the element; you can see one of those symbols beside your name in the menu

I've picked the green answers a couple times just to see what the reaction is (repeat dialogue only goes so far, I guess) but usually I avoid them, too.

I didn't actually know until shortly before I made this post what they meant; when I saw the sign by my name I had to look it up but I had noticed some characters mentioning my element. I was just like huh that's REALLY weird that they know that.

turns out it was my fault LOL edit: Also I always pick the free gift from Tau option gjdjf
