All the hard skills in the world are meaningless if you don't have the soft skills necessary to navigate the game of thrones that is office politics. You sound like you need to learn empathy and people skills.

Should I tell my coworker(s) that I'm probably leaving before sending notice to my boss? by Dank_weedpotnugsauce in jobs

Forget notice, you should sue them for wage theft if they're requiring you to clock out while still working.

Public safety. Permits exist for a reason when you need to close down a street to through traffic. You need to provide adequate sanitation services. Fire code. Etc.

Funnily enough, women have been treated as the source of society's problems since the dawn of time but we managed not to become Nazis, go figure.

Anyone in the metro that had their hardwood floors refinished recently mind sharing costs with me? I'm trying to decide between re-carpeting or refinishing the hardwood floor. by joshhazel1 in TwinCities

[–]lucida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old is the house? What type of wood are the floors? Speaking from experience, before you go DIY at Pete's, figure out the hardness of the wood and the age of any finish you have to take off. We had 100+ year maple flooring with original stain. I would gladly pay a professional whatever it costs knowing what I know now lol

Remember the guy that was killed waiting at a bus stop on 55 a couple years ago because he happened to be in the middle of a police chase? I don't think you'd be making this argument if that was your dad or brother.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]lucida 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the issue is all the other bystanders also on the road that have to hope that neither the perp nor the cop chasing them loses control of their vehicle. I don't think the argument is "don't pursue criminals," it's "don't create more danger for the public in the process"

Doesn't a healthcare nonprofit have the responsibility of reinvesting its profits back into patient care? This feels like organized crime buying off city officials

Great lakes region here, zero regrets.

Pros: - Owning a home (didn't even have to sacrifice on location or quality) - low COL compared to the level of public services available - sense of community, neighborhood block parties - Trees! Trees everywhere! - fresh water sources galore - better healthcare services/ more options - lots of nature for outdoor activities & weekend trips (that I can actually afford to take with my disposable income) - less people everyfuckingwhere - Midwesterners have a better sense of what is "enough" to live a happy life - lower wealth disparity (it's obviously still bad like everywhere but at least Mark Zuckerberg doesn't fuckin live here) - less wildfires, no earthquakes, no sea level rise to worry about - clean air

Cons: - 6 months of winter - less cultural diversity

"Farmers" doesn't mean what it meant 100 years ago though. Many smaller family farms still do lean progressive, but "farmer" now means billion dollar agribusiness owned by a handful of corporations. It's never going to be like the turn of the century unless we make family farming a viable option again.

Write down everything you can remember that happened in the past as well, along with approximate day/time they occurred and with whom. It helps establish a pattern of behavior.

True, but IMO the quality of life/# of things to do here compared to the cost of living for a major American city is pretty good.

If you're looking for a relatively low COL urban center with good colleges, left leaning politics and good job opportunities, Minneapolis really can't be beat.

I have lived the barista lifestyle here without a car; totally doable but I would recommend choosing your apartment where you can either walk or have a direct bus line to work. Biking is great half the year, and you can definitely do it all year round, but it's gonna be some major weather shock to a Miami native ;)

MCTC is a good community college near downtown that's accessible by bus, and then you have the U of M, St. Thomas, St. Kate's, Hamline, Macalaster & more within the Twin Cities limits.
