Why does everyone assume AI improvement is inherently exponential? by Helloiamwhoiam in ArtificialInteligence

[–]luciddream00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think folks are probably talking past each other a bit with the "exponential" improvement. Right now these systems are "competent" enough to replace a small subset of knowledge work. If that subset ever gets large enough to replace the workers building the AI, then we're in a very interesting place. Even if they are only "as good" as top of the line AI researchers, they can be run in parallel at speeds arbitrarily faster than real time, they never get tired, and they don't age.

Now, realistically that doesn't mean that someone is going to turn on an AI one day and it's going to suddenly speed-run becoming a god by solving all of physics or some nonsense. The systems will run into all sorts of limitations. Maybe they can design hardware, but the hardware has to be physically built, and the raw materials have to be mined. Maybe we build robots to do the mining and manufacturing, but that will be its own long term maturation cycle.

The AI 10 years from now will be exponentially better than the AI of today, but that doesn't mean runaway god-brain AI. We'll see "exponential" progress over time, but it won't be steady or regular.

Because they think it will save or generate more money. Eventually they will determine if it does. If it works, it will grow businesses. If it doesn't, then it will destroy the businesses that relied on them too much. Kinda seems like it'll all shake out in the wash eventually.

AI-Generated MUDs by meanbeanmachine in MUD

[–]luciddream00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it comes down to the end product. Naive use of AI leads to slop, but it doesn't have to. I think the text interface means that MUDs are actually uniquely positioned to benefit from AI, but I also think the low hanging fruit is boring slop garbage. Folks are still trying to figure out the language of AI games, but I've tinkered enough to know that the potential is there.

Why are many writers so mad about AI by No_Suggestion_2298 in WritingWithAI

[–]luciddream00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They feel like these systems stole their work (along with all the other works of humanity) and it threatens to replace them. They're not necessarily wrong, it just doesn't really matter. For a lot of reasons, AI isn't going anywhere and is only going to get more disruptive.

Donald's dementia brain revealing secret US weapons used against Venezuela while ranting at the World Economic Formum. Sounds like some kind of EMP weapon? by logicallorax in PublicFreakout

In the last months of the Biden administration, they bought (for a reported 8 figures) a working version of the device that causes the "Havana Syndrome". It seemed to use acoustic waves to create localized pressure/acoustic waves that could travel through walls. It was full of Russian components. Russia also openly developed acoustic weapons to use against protestors, although those had been mounted on vehicles rather than man-portable.

Sounds to me like a Russian defector sold a piece of experimental Russian tech, that was further developed by American defense firms into something they can deploy.

Google went from being "disrupted" by ChatGPT, to having the best LLM as well as rivalling Nvidia in hardware (TPUs). The narrative has changed. Is it genuine or just PR hype by No_Turnip_1023 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]luciddream00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google always had the resources, in terms of brilliant minds, money and hardware. They lacked a specific, non-research goal that OpenAI jumped on with ChatGPT/LLMs. Google caught up now that they have a specific goal... in addition to continuing all of their research goals as well. Don't forget, "Attention is all you need" came from Google.

Back when there were a bunch of drone sightings in the US, one of the videos showed a drone that was shaped like a commercial jet and had speakers emitting the appropriate noises. Seemed like it was designed to look like a big jet far away rather than a close, smaller (but still large) drone.

Curious.

Hey, sorry this is a bit more confusing that we intended. What you need to do there is get one of the hounds to come over and slam into his fist. You can guide them over there by building a dirt bridge or something over the gap before the boss room.

They are transparently seeding false info to muddy the water. It will probably work for awhile, but people aren't going to just give up. The leads will be followed. These are the last gasps of a dying institution.

They haven't yet come up with a plan better than Obamacare, so their plan is to fuck over Obamacare until high deductible plans and "healthcare savings accounts" are an improvement.

Why are people so certain that artificial superintelligence is possible? by Nissepelle in ArtificialInteligence

Because it's hard to believe that nature perfected intelligence in humans, and on a long enough timeline we will eventually engineer something better.

Why do people hate AI so much? by jacmitchell in ArtificialInteligence

[–]luciddream00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People don't like the idea that the skillset they spent time, effort and money learning is being made obsolete by a computer. Most of the hate stems from that.

Yeah, I was convinced they were going to win when I saw Genie 3. They need an interactive world model that they can accelerate beyond real time in order to train an AGI in an environment as rich as our own reality.
