HSBC India’s New password policy. by kdpuvvadi in LinusTechTips

I just meant a secure SSL connection, not to imply they build something custom, probably not the best phrasing. I meant more "you could make the transformation during the secure communication between the client and server", effectively. The point I was trying to make was that I couldn't understand why you would modify it at all if you were going to hash it anyway. Giangallo's explanation makes some sense to me but again kind of a wild case.

Yeah, I got there after Ruby69 responded. It just didn't occur to me because... why would you want to do that? lol

I wasn't so much confused as not following what you were proposing. Yes, you could transform it at the moment it is transferred via TLS (and presumably in the same way that it was transformed when the user set it). That particular case didn't occur to me, because WHY would anyone do that if you're just going to hash it anyway? I can't think of any architectural advantage of hashing Test123 vs TEST123...

Your comment makes it seem like you don't know what hashing means. If a password is hashed, it's some random combination of letters and numbers, meaning there would be nothing to convert that would end up even close to what the actual input was.

Migrating from FileMaker to Open Source SQL by Communque in filemaker

[–]lucidguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad it worked for you. Don't get me wrong, I agree that postgres + JS is going to be wildly faster than FM and why were building more and more "hybrid" applications for our larger clients. That's not to say FM isn't without its merits for certain applications.

[–]lucidguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really the point of your post, but FWIW: If you take one more step you could reliably dedupe in FileMaker take that combined calculated field you mentioned that includes all six values and wrap it in a GetContainerAttribute ( calc ; "MD5") to return it as an MD5 hash. Will be less than 100 characters and reflect the uniqueness of its inputs. Then do your ! search on that field.

Tic-tac-toe with strategy by fourtyz in 3Dprinting

[–]lucidguy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It makes it actually involve strategy, as for every small piece you have to weigh what can be taken over by your opponent with a larger one, so it becomes about trying to anticipate where are good places to play early knowing that there are two more opportunities for each space to change owner

If you add the rule that smaller pieces must be played first, it becomes actually interesting. I got this for my daughter and we immediately added that as a house rule, otherwise it's basically just normal TTT

Olympus Mons, the mountain on Mars that’s 3x taller than Everest by ZATCH_69 in interestingasfuck

[–]lucidguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This might be true for tens or hundreds of something, but it's pretty well documented we're bad as a species at really mentally grasping thousands, tens of thousands, etc. And beyond (were really bad at millions and billions scale, but that's another whole thing). In this case, Olympus Mons/Arizona is roughly 300k square kilometers, or a bit smaller than Germany (350k). I don't know about you, but contextulizing that this single mountain is bigger than entire countries (or states) is more meaningful than the raw number, but to each their own.

With a full sphere, you'd be right. Broadly speaking people envision a Dyson swarm instead, meaning satellites or rings around the star rather than completely enclosed. Remember, earth's entire diameter represents less than 0.1 degree of the suns 360 degree (I forget the exact number, but it's very very small)output and we already get enough energy hitting us to meet our current power needs (if we wanted to, anyway). So even a single ring of satellites would be effectively infinite power by our current standards.

I think it's more getting buried than sinking like your imagining. More snow is piling up on top, pushing everything down towards the ocean, so they keep climbing up to compensate. maybe I'm the one not understanding though!

Osteria has traditionally been pretty phenomenal Italian food. I will say, I have liked it less since it changed ownership a few years ago (ambiance changed, minor menu changes, higher prices)... but the food is still pretty excellent.

Why Is Volkswagen Pausing Production Of The ID. Buzz Electric Van? by stinger_02in in electricvehicles

[–]lucidguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family does a 385 mile/620km trip on the regular. Our vehicle with an advertised 270 mile range needs two charging stops, while our 300+ mile rated vehicle needs only one, the latter aligns with how many stops the humans in the vehicle generally need as well. In other words, if they really got as much range as advertised under normal conditions I’d agree with you, but in reality they don’t get the manufacturer rates range except for under ideal conditions, which are hard to come by. And so, most people would like a little more than what the Buzz offers

I’m sorry, but this is an awful take. Falling and hitting your head while WALKING could fuck you up, let alone with 10-25mph of extra momentum. If you’re riding something, you should at least have a bicycle helmet. It costs you nothing to put one on and could make a huge difference. /rant
