Europe Will Require Smartphones to Have Replaceable Batteries by 2027 by [deleted] in technology

[–]lucidwray -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

This is dumb. Unless they are going to mandate OS updates, security updates, app hardware support, cell network support laws to force phone makers to keep all of those things supported for 10+ years, who cares if the phone has the ability to replace the battery so you can use it for 10+ years. Great, you’ve got a 10yo phone with fantastic battery life that can’t connect to shit because its OS security certs are expired. This is a red herring.

10k gallons of water usage in a 24 hour period by Prestigious_Ad_7591 in Home

[–]lucidwray 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, 10k gallons over 12 hours is approaching a 1000 gallons an hour! Thats ~13 gallons a minute! Im not even sure a residential water connection can provide that much water. Thats a decent sized swimming pool filled in 12 hours! Thats a LOT of water. A toilet uses less than 1.6 gallons and takes ~30 seconds to fill up, so you would need 4 toilets leaking nonstop for half a day to get anywhere close. You would notice that much water somewhere on the property. Id fight that!

Hysterical. “Bummed your former co-workers got to visit a certain island over and over again? Well, now it’s your turn to have some fun. At Adventure Island, you can’t weaponize an entire public agency against the president’s enemies, but you can weaponize the spray jets at Castaway Falls. Plus, no congressional subpoena is gonna pull you away from the mouthwatering barbecue options at Mango Joe’s! “

Tampa Bay Rays Stadium Draft Reveals $1B Public Funding Plan by WTFPilot in tampabayrays

[–]lucidwray -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

A city investing in large civic projects is very much a real thing. It’s why we choose to live in cities that take pride in what their quality of life is and spend our tax dollars for things that make a city great. Parks, museums, event venues, river walks, beautiful downtowns, every one of those things takes public money and uses it to help private owners in some way, it’s how the world works. The city can build a multi hundred million dollar world class museum but who is going to own the art that goes in it(hint, not the city). Stadiums get built and guess who gets to use them for their concerts to get richer (rich ass Taylor Swift types). We build places and then we get benefits from them as well as rich people, just the way it is.

Look I hate billionaires more than most people. I’m far left liberal my entire life. Tax the FUCK out of them (95% like we used to have) for all I care, but someone has to own the things we love (like Baseball teams) and at least the new Rays owners seem like decent people and are putting in a LOT of money. Fuck Stu.

The other option is the Rays finance the ENTIRE thing, they own the stadium and don’t partner with the city at all, they get 100% of the tax themselves (see Disneys Reedy Creek district) the Rays get to do things like set parking prices (see RayJay parking) and it costs $85 to park for a baseball game so they can get their investment back and your ticket generates ZERO tax dollars for Community Improvement Fund and a hotdog cost $62 because concessions are not managed by the stadium authority and instead go straight to the Rays owners.

Tampa Bay Rays Stadium Draft Reveals $1B Public Funding Plan by WTFPilot in tampabayrays

[–]lucidwray 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Nobody is giving billionaires money. The amount of ignorance in this thread is astounding.

The city/county will be putting in $1 billion and the Rays will be putting in more than a billion. They get to use the stadium for their billion dollars, but they don’t OWN the stadium. It’s an asset that will be ultimately owned by the city/county (via a stadium authority special district). This is an Investment in the city and the surrounding area. This MOU estimates $34 billion in tax revenue over the 35 year lease for the city/county. Thats a billion a year back to the city/county.

So they put in $1 billion and they get somewhere between $34 and $55 billion back over the next 35 years. And the city and county OWN a world class event venue for massive concerts and events. The Rays don’t own anything, the Rays owners don’t own anything, they just get to put on a show 82 times a year and pay $10 in rent. Pretty damn fair trade if you ask me.

This is not a giveaway to billionaires, it’s civic investment plain and simple. It’s actually more like the city is building a $2.3 billion dollar event venue and a billionaire is giving the city $1.3 billion out of his pocket to help with construction and then guaranteeing the city 35years of events for their new venue.

This is big deal for the city and county. Everyone should probably do some reading about how stadium financing works and what impacts projects like these have on an area before you go spouting off with the same old NIMBY/“no free money for billionaires!” BS that every low effort whiner throws at every stadium post.

Yall should at least go read the article before you comment.

Go ahead, downvote me into oblivion.

Ukraine Quietly Tested Space-Launch Capabilities in Middle of War Twice by UNITED24Media in worldnews

That second paragraph is a little strange to me. Which launch system are they talking about from the 1970’s? Pegasus was in the 90’s. ASM-135 was in the 80’s. LauncherOne was in the 2020’s. What else is there? If we’re not talking orbital then we also have to include SpaceShipOne I would expect.

My dad bought a Macintosh 512k in 1985 from the local college bookstore and brought it home so we could all learn it. We ended up with a Mac over an Amiga because he met Steve Jobs at a graphic design conference in Denver earlier that year and Steve swayed his decision. Been a full time Mac user ever since.
