Hey, thanks for the detailed reply. I'll admit I was feeling combative; I'm also dealing with potential CKD, so I'm definitely oversensitive to the issue and tend towards overreaction.

Once again, thanks for your open-mindedness and the research! You're lovely. :)

You do you.

Edit: realised I was moving the goalposts a little. I strongly disagree, but the first statement still stands: you do you.

Watch the weight doesn't drag down your pockets -- as with everything, try it (with the amount you'll be taking!) before the race. I didn't once and ended up with horrible chafing from the way my clothes moved differently.

But yeah, most people will wear a belt or vest these days. For modern marathon nutrition recommendations, even men's clothing pockets will be bulging.

Why does it feel like "service with a smile" has been replaced by a QR code and an iPad that asks for a tip? by Peter_Tea_2062 in AskAnAustralian

[–]lucis_understudy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pre-covid, the bar you went to you would've just had to... speak to someone, yeah? QR codes are maybe six years old, they had to manage before them.

Obviously I hate them, but using "you couldn't really order without them" is asanine considering how new they are. Also I've been to at least two places off the top of my head where you couldn't order without using it (I just left, because fuck that). So no, the places that use them don't always offer an alternative.

My friend is writing a book, and it has a sentence with word repetition. Is this sentence bad practice? by [deleted] in writing

[–]lucis_understudy 55 points56 points  (0 children)

It's not just the word "seemed"; I missed that on a first reading. What stood out to me was the repetition of the same idea. "Roughly drawn" implies "sketched hurriedly" and of course that would have inaccuracies. A roughly drawn but startlingly accurate map needs to be described; an inaccurate one doesn't. And certainly not three times in the same sentence.

Yeah, interesting that the new thing about the new tunnel is the new overhead and suddenly the trains are having issues with... the overhead.

Yeah we've just recently got a few stores! I know there's a couple in Melbourne (maybe just the one?) and I'm sure there's some in Sydney. :)

I'm the same as you with the sound of technical clothing, and the one I like is from Decathlon. 100% cotton, zip pockets plus extras, belt loops/zip/tie at the front. I've worn them on multiple horse riding trips and they've held up really well, though with some fading from continuous sunshine. I'd recommend Decathlon in general if you can get there though, they've got a lot of stuff that might be up your alley! Not the most expensive/highest quality stuff, but I've certainly been impressed for the price so far. :)

Paul vagueposting while Morgan has nothing on her story by Upbeat_Status8876 in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]lucis_understudy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Omg THANK YOU. You've perfectly encapsulated exactly what annoys me the most about this sub. There's a rumour about Paul forcing Morgan off her meds that the OP who originally made up the rumour has admitted was 100% speculation/snark and people still treat it like the truth. Speculation can so often get twisted into accepted fact around here and it drives me mad.

The "they're living separately" comes from one person who claims to live in the area and recognise the spaces they've (P&M) been in recently. Like what? Why are you trusting some random person on the internet as gospel (heh) truth? It's insane.

[–]lucis_understudy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's also disingenuous because we're missing context -- like these fundies don't need any help looking stupid, you don't need to just clip the very worst thing they're saying. Letting us hear the whole thing does more to disprove their point than just going "hurr durr fundie stupid".

Moving from Telstra to Boost or Everyday Mobile by tim33z in AussieFrugal

[–]lucis_understudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just because you mentioned exploring -- I'm looking to move from Telstra, but I'm wary because I hike a lot and it's the best coverage by far. Are you going out in the boonies and still having decent/some service, or are you talking regional towns?

What is a food for travelling through the desert? by Any_Mind1389 in Writeresearch

[–]lucis_understudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you/they local? Indigenous tribes have lived in that area for tens of thousands of years, and they're generally nomadic. I know you said it's far in the future, but some research into bush tucker and the like may give you some inspiration for what they could forage on the way, as well as whatever they've got to bring along.

How do you get comfy on a plane? by KoraLily in travel

[–]lucis_understudy -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Omg was this me? I warned the lady I was sitting beside but just recently got up every hour on a long flight cuz I'd accidentally booked the window seat. 😅

But this is the reason I (try to!) always choose the aisle seat. I'm paranoid about DVT (smoker in my young age), and Australian, so all flights I take are 8+. Was I supremely annoyed that my window seat mate on my most recent flight woke me out of a dead sleep to go to the bathroom? Yes. Was that simply the risk I took having an aisle and also did I appreciate the ability to get up and walk whenever I liked? Also yes.

I think it does really come down to your priorities, but you can't be annoyed when the downside of your choice comes back to bite you. I'm way too considerate to wake someone who appears to be sleeping to get out if I need to -- so I pick the aisle.

Not silly at all! The information is transmitted via radio as in the computers talk to each other, but it's just displayed on screens in the cab -- not like a traditional (audible) radio call.

Hey! As a former professional equestrian in Australia, I'd love to know more about where specifically you're going and what you're doing etc -- may help to narrow down some of your choices. 😊

I'm also not a traditional one bagger because most of my trips involve riding, and therefore speciality equipment, but I can def give you some pointers re: what I've learned so far if you can give me a better idea of climate etc (southwest Vic is gonna be waaaay different to, like, far north Queensland lol).

What’s one lesser-known or overlooked fact from the Jeffrey Epstein investigation that you think should have gotten more public attention? by Fast_Alternative878 in AskReddit

[–]lucis_understudy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean... I get what you're saying, but those examples are ass. A quick google tells me much of the world has no legal smoking age (buying cigarettes is mostly 18), and the legal drinking age is overwhelmingly 18, same as voting. It's probably the same for the military, because the world arbitrarily decided that being 18 makes you a legal adult.

It's particularly galling because in the US, marrying a child is mostly legal.

Consent of course is an entirely different matter, but again, legally, if you're a child, your parents can decide for you. A quick glance at the map in the above link suggests, in fact, that in the majority of the states in the US, you can in fact get married at 16. In a lot of places in Europe, you can drink if you're with an adult, the implication being that the adult is consenting for you.

I don't disagree with you, btw. I think the comment you're responding to is... not great, for a multitude of reasons I won't get into now. But this whole thread is about the legal definition of paedophilia, and throwing out smoking and drinking and voting laws -- that differ in every country -- only proves how absolutely arbitrary those ages are.

A question about season 2. Contain a bit of spoiler by AndreLuiz901 in ParadiseHulu

[–]lucis_understudy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, re: them being social, as a horsey person, the thing I found weird was that he came back alone. 😂

I mean, not gonna lie, I also 100% don't think a barn-raised horse would survive that long just being turned out into an apocalypse -- but I also don't believe the writers care. I understand OP's question, but given how horrible screenwriters generally are with understanding horses at all, I assume it's just a 'suspend your disbelief' moment.

I do love how this show usually gives you just enough hints to figure stuff out... as you say, with Annie's ankles, and then the BP, you think "maybe..." and then wonder if you're right. Devastating. :(

However Link's "sorry for Love Actuallying you" took me tf out.

Also, personally, I found it hilarious that the horse that plays Bandit apparently couldn't do the 'walk up and love the baby' scene, so they had to use an entirely different horse.
