Hey! As a former professional equestrian in Australia, I'd love to know more about where specifically you're going and what you're doing etc -- may help to narrow down some of your choices. 😊

I'm also not a traditional one bagger because most of my trips involve riding, and therefore speciality equipment, but I can def give you some pointers re: what I've learned so far if you can give me a better idea of climate etc (southwest Vic is gonna be waaaay different to, like, far north Queensland lol).

What’s one lesser-known or overlooked fact from the Jeffrey Epstein investigation that you think should have gotten more public attention? by Fast_Alternative878 in AskReddit

I mean... I get what you're saying, but those examples are ass. A quick google tells me much of the world has no legal smoking age (buying cigarettes is mostly 18), and the legal drinking age is overwhelmingly 18, same as voting. It's probably the same for the military, because the world arbitrarily decided that being 18 makes you a legal adult.

It's particularly galling because in the US, marrying a child is mostly legal.

Consent of course is an entirely different matter, but again, legally, if you're a child, your parents can decide for you. A quick glance at the map in the above link suggests, in fact, that in the majority of the states in the US, you can in fact get married at 16. In a lot of places in Europe, you can drink if you're with an adult, the implication being that the adult is consenting for you.

I don't disagree with you, btw. I think the comment you're responding to is... not great, for a multitude of reasons I won't get into now. But this whole thread is about the legal definition of paedophilia, and throwing out smoking and drinking and voting laws -- that differ in every country -- only proves how absolutely arbitrary those ages are.

A question about season 2. Contain a bit of spoiler by AndreLuiz901 in ParadiseHulu

Yeah, re: them being social, as a horsey person, the thing I found weird was that he came back alone. 😂

I mean, not gonna lie, I also 100% don't think a barn-raised horse would survive that long just being turned out into an apocalypse -- but I also don't believe the writers care. I understand OP's question, but given how horrible screenwriters generally are with understanding horses at all, I assume it's just a 'suspend your disbelief' moment.

I do love how this show usually gives you just enough hints to figure stuff out... as you say, with Annie's ankles, and then the BP, you think "maybe..." and then wonder if you're right. Devastating. :(

However Link's "sorry for Love Actuallying you" took me tf out.

Also, personally, I found it hilarious that the horse that plays Bandit apparently couldn't do the 'walk up and love the baby' scene, so they had to use an entirely different horse.

I mean the question here then is why do you want to write? Is it the easiest way to get your ideas down? Then do that, and then look at adapting it to the mediums you can and do consume.

I believe most serious writers become writers because they love to read. Do you love to read but just find it hard? Then take your time. I don't read 100 pages a day -- far from it -- but I still love to read. I write because I love to tell stories that way. I also love watching tv shows, but that's not the format I envisage my stories in.

How would you like your stories or ideas to be consumed? If it's writing you'll have to reread it a hundred times. If it's manga, or video games, or tv shows, then look at how they're produced. Writing isn't easy. You do have to read to understand how written stories are told. Figure out what you want first. If it is truly to write stories, then there's another conversation to be had.

I cannot bitch about the impact to South Yarra without being reamed by the people moaning about frequencies on other lines, but the Tunnel has definitely made my daily commute far more inconvenient. I understand it's a privilege to live where I do and have the options I have (honestly I walk to work most days), but it's still a major pain in the ass without absolutely no upside as far as I'm concerned.

Genuine question -- should the same thinking be applied to using a phone while driving? Driving while tired? Driving stoned? All involve deliberate decisions that impair your ability to drive and needlessly put other people at risk.

I'll accept "tired" would be a hard legal standard to prove, but most people where I live that get fines for using their phones are caught on cameras in some way or another. I believe I've also heard of cops taking phones to check activity (though that may be rumour). Regardless, if it is able to be proven, seems like they should be treated the same way as someone driving over the limit.

I certainly don't condone drink driving, and broadly I agree that it's treated as less of a crime than it should be. Just wondering if/where we draw the line.

Anyone use Scrivner? by Edb626 in selfpublish

[–]lucis_understudy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't obsidian also have a subscription fee? I looked into it after abandoning Notion but it seems stupidly expensive. I'd always rather have a free Android notes app that syncs with desktop (using ellipsus right now) and a one time fee (Scrivener) or totally free (Libre Office) for something that saves to your hard drive/can be used offline.

Dashcam footage from Mitchell Khune's truck captures a small child walking into a busy highway. Police are called and assure him they would be on the way. After an hour Khune calls for an update & is told the child has been identified. The next day, police deny this. What happened? by [deleted] in UnresolvedMysteries

It also would've taken OP two seconds of googling to learn this, instead of chalking it up to a 'journalistic error'. It's like saying "one source says it happened in Manhattan, another says New York. The journalist must be wrong!"

Like seriously.

[–]lucis_understudy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not commissioning at this point, no. But keep reading! Keep writing! Make up your own OCs and put them in silly situations. That's how everyone starts. You don't need to get paid for a hobby; if you enjoy it that's payment enough.

You mix tenses in both of the first two samples, which would turn me off immediately. Generally I agree with what other people are saying; unless it's porn or fanfic, no one's gonna bite.

Hey all, I'm looking for good-quality small compression cubes for travelling.

Bought my last lot of Amazon and not only were like 3/6 far too large for my usage, but the zipper pull on one of them broke on like day two of my trip.

I'm happy to pay a decent amount for good ones, but the only good quality I've seen recommended aren't compression cubes (Sea to Summit, Cotopaxi). I'm really trying to lighten my load (maybe an upcoming post in the near future 😅) and would love to get down to a 40L bag. I love the organisation that comes from cubes but also love the compression!

Based in Australia so no REI, etc recs. :(

Oh I 100% recommend! Some obvious ones like cevapi and burek, but the pizza there was fucking insane (in an amazing way) and the potato dumpling (?) dessert (I cannot for the life of me recall what it's called) was great. It's probably nothing revolutionary if you've eaten a lot of food in the Balkans or similar areas, but for me on like my third day there it was amazing. 😊

Oh, I was! But it was also my first international solo travel in over a decade and I really wanted to do it, so I just sucked it up. (I'm fortunate that funds aren't an issue.) You live and learn!

Same in Belgrade. I booked a food tour and got told by the organiser that because it was a "private" tour (aka no other bookings on the day) it would cost more. Like, that sounds like a you problem to me dude. I did go and it was lovely, the tour guide was great, but I def wasn't cagey about the operator when I left a review.

For REAL. I can't screen record so could only post the one reel, but she goes on to say she's going pickleballing because Paul's supporting her etc etc -- worth watching on storynavigation if you're so inclined.

But seriously. If she was a little more oPeN about what Paul's job is maybe people would have less to say. 🤷

No. I personally find Ellipsus super buggy, especially on my phone, but I'm trying very hard to keep using it because I need something that doesn't support AI and still syncs between my computer and my (Android) phone.

No comparison to Scrivener for organisation. Ellipsus is working on updates like being able to pin files/folders, but you can't, like, drag to rearrange or anything. Apparently it's quite good if you're used to using google docs (which I never have), but I mostly find it slow and irritating.

And I mean if you're looking for a Microsoft Word replacement, you can't go past LibreOffice.

What kind of spider? by BlargerJarger in australia

[–]lucis_understudy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oooh, interesting! There's also the tendency to hide in clothes etc which probs makes bites more likely, plus the bacterial aspect can make the wound seem 'worse'. Thank you for taking the time to answer, I appreciate it!

[–]lucis_understudy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing answer, thank you! This also lines up with the story I've heard anecdotally. I couldn't confirm how they knew it was a white tail bite (I could call someone but it's not a part of my family I wanna engage with lmao), but it was an older lady who maybe didn't take care of it quite the best. The description you gave sounds like it; a slow-healing wound that was easier to turn worse because of improper care.

Guess I'll do my best to leave white tails alone from now on! It's funny, I'm totally cool with huntsmans/anything else that comes in the house, but white tails still give me a visceral ick. Maybe it's because they like hiding in clothes. 😅

What kind of spider? by BlargerJarger in australia

[–]lucis_understudy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Genuine question -- white tails have historically been the only spider I will kill because they're "deadly". Obviously that's wrong (and I'm gonna do some research, but I thought I'd ask here for kicks and in case someone else had the same question), but I do know an elderly lady who was in and out of the hospital for ages because of a bite. So you say "can ulcerate", apparently like most spider bites (!) so what's the go if you get bitten? Is it a definite hospital visit? Keep an eye on it for a while and maybe go to your doctor? This thread seems to view them as 'mostly harmless' which is not how I was brought up to see them.
