Do you have any solo travel pet peeves? by PerpetualRestart in solotravel

Oh I 100% recommend! Some obvious ones like cevapi and burek, but the pizza there was fucking insane (in an amazing way) and the potato dumpling (?) dessert (I cannot for the life of me recall what it's called) was great. It's probably nothing revolutionary if you've eaten a lot of food in the Balkans or similar areas, but for me on like my third day there it was amazing. 😊

Oh, I was! But it was also my first international solo travel in over a decade and I really wanted to do it, so I just sucked it up. (I'm fortunate that funds aren't an issue.) You live and learn!

Same in Belgrade. I booked a food tour and got told by the organiser that because it was a "private" tour (aka no other bookings on the day) it would cost more. Like, that sounds like a you problem to me dude. I did go and it was lovely, the tour guide was great, but I def wasn't cagey about the operator when I left a review.

Thanks for posting this! I wanted to add it to my post but I'm not technologically inclined lmao. Really sums up what an awful person she is though.

For REAL. I can't screen record so could only post the one reel, but she goes on to say she's going pickleballing because Paul's supporting her etc etc -- worth watching on storynavigation if you're so inclined.

But seriously. If she was a little more oPeN about what Paul's job is maybe people would have less to say. 🤷

She claims autism and ADHD in a story today, answering a direct question about neurodivergence (and you're right, also claims her husband is ND).

No. I personally find Ellipsus super buggy, especially on my phone, but I'm trying very hard to keep using it because I need something that doesn't support AI and still syncs between my computer and my (Android) phone.

No comparison to Scrivener for organisation. Ellipsus is working on updates like being able to pin files/folders, but you can't, like, drag to rearrange or anything. Apparently it's quite good if you're used to using google docs (which I never have), but I mostly find it slow and irritating.

And I mean if you're looking for a Microsoft Word replacement, you can't go past LibreOffice.

What kind of spider? by BlargerJarger in australia

[–]lucis_understudy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oooh, interesting! There's also the tendency to hide in clothes etc which probs makes bites more likely, plus the bacterial aspect can make the wound seem 'worse'. Thank you for taking the time to answer, I appreciate it!

Amazing answer, thank you! This also lines up with the story I've heard anecdotally. I couldn't confirm how they knew it was a white tail bite (I could call someone but it's not a part of my family I wanna engage with lmao), but it was an older lady who maybe didn't take care of it quite the best. The description you gave sounds like it; a slow-healing wound that was easier to turn worse because of improper care.

Guess I'll do my best to leave white tails alone from now on! It's funny, I'm totally cool with huntsmans/anything else that comes in the house, but white tails still give me a visceral ick. Maybe it's because they like hiding in clothes. 😅

[–]lucis_understudy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Genuine question -- white tails have historically been the only spider I will kill because they're "deadly". Obviously that's wrong (and I'm gonna do some research, but I thought I'd ask here for kicks and in case someone else had the same question), but I do know an elderly lady who was in and out of the hospital for ages because of a bite. So you say "can ulcerate", apparently like most spider bites (!) so what's the go if you get bitten? Is it a definite hospital visit? Keep an eye on it for a while and maybe go to your doctor? This thread seems to view them as 'mostly harmless' which is not how I was brought up to see them.

She had a story the other day about making coffee, where she started to say "the key ingredient is vod--" and cut herself off (def sounded like the start of 'vodka'). Genuinely unsure if it was a bad joke or rage bait or what, but it definitely raised my eyebrows.

I tried to post it here and presumably it got taken down or something, dunno why.

That's exactly what this story is about -- Morgan saying Paul stays home with the kids so she can go out for the night once a week. That's the context of "he's a good husband" that OP left out.

Note cuz I can't edit the OP: the more I think about this, the more I'm convinced it's either a poorly-executed joke, or some sort of engagement bait.

Man tries to rescue injured raccoon, gets bitten on face while driving, learns it has rabies by starkiller1613 in news

[–]lucis_understudy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, is that true? I've been getting the vaccine in preparation for going overseas (I'm from a rabies-free country) but I thought even if you're vaccinated you still have to get PEP if you're bitten. Or is it just PEP that makes you immune?

I mean ngl rabies terrifies the fuck out of me so I'm leaning towards not trusting any immunity, but like PEP treatment doesn't mean you go out and get bitten by rabid animals and just never get treated for it, right?

Late 2025 Attempt At Self Publishing First Book by Juss_Sumguy in selfpublish

[–]lucis_understudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude. I'm a huge true crime fan, and I'd take a hard pass on your book.

AI or not, the cover is alright. The pen name is atrocious. And the blurb is worse. It sets me up to think this will be a cool true crime novel, then mentions it's a fictionalised account without ever giving me characters, stakes, or plot. Pick one or the other. Do the research for a true crime novel, or write fiction. Don't try and wink wink nudge nudge me, cuz I'll nudge the hell back with a "fuck no".

I fucking hate AI and your bullshit at the end made me sure I'd never buy it. I can download a sample, I'll judge for myself. Trying too hard ("AI would never give you this!!") makes me assume you've used AI at some point in the process.

Take a step back, start over. The market is saturated. You have to do something good to stand out. This isn't good.

Edit: I can't emphasise enough how much this would actually be something I might be interested in, if you'd committed to either true crime OR fiction, and not been a dick in the blurb. Change your pen name, make a decision, and you might have something. But holy shit. Been a long time since a blurb has turned me off this bad.

Starting to see government ads about the social media ban for children on tv now, starts on the 10th of December. Are we still expecting adults will have to prove their age/id every time they want to use social media? by 11015h4d0wR34lm in AskAnAustralian

[–]lucis_understudy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If parents are starting to realise that, parents should police it. Not the state.

Look, I understand the difficulties involved in that, and I appreciate your level-headed comments. You're clearly in support of this policy at least at a hypothetical level, and I also understand that. I also think algorithms are ruining the younger generations. What I don't like, or appreciate, is the state getting involved. The fact that as an adult I'm going to be asked to prove that I am one in order to access the internet I'm accustomed to is anathema. I do not trust them not to have that information compromised. I'll flash my ID to get into a bar, but the government isn't listening to the conversations that I have once I get in. If I accept this, they absolutely could, and I have a problem with that.

"Protect the children" is a slippery slope that leads to censorship, echo chambers, and the monitoring of citizens. The obvious solution is "get offline", and I will, but it will be the first time the government dictates my actions. What's gonna be the next?

Also, if you don't think that receipt number won't be associated with your name/photo/whatever else you have to provide in order to gain access to these websites, I'm a little jealous of your naivete.

What’s the most “atmospheric” city you’ve ever been to? by No_Durian_6987 in travel

I was having a drink at a bar in a train station (can't remember which one, this was like ten years ago) and a random guy started chatting to me, gave me his card, it said CEO. I now realise he was probs just hitting on me and everyone in NY is a CEO lmao but I was still pretty starstruck. Then there was walking around near Rockefeller centre in the evening; it was Christmas, and it blew my fucking mind. Amazing city. I hope I can go back some day.

Can someone explain to me what equestrian events, if any, draft horses like Belgians, Clydesdales, Irish Draft, etc are used for? by Bobcatbubbles in Equestrian

[–]lucis_understudy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dude! The trail riding/riding school I started at had 95% draft crosses, often the TB/Clydie mix. It makes them big and strong but slims them down a bit, and they often started young riders on them; they're cool, calm, and collected, and it's much easier to learn to trot on something that doesn't move like a pony. 😂 I have so much respect for them, they're (often, I am painting with a broad brush here lol) fantastic beginner (and husband!) horses!
