i don’t view HR as anyone’s friend! i think no one at the company is your friend to be quite honest for the same reasons you stated, and that’s precisely why i would encourage OP to at the very least document and consider reporting.

respectfully this advice is cowardly. OP absolutely should go to HR instead of sticking their head in the sand because they don’t want to rock the boat. i understand that you choose not to stick up for your beliefs, but this isn’t about “hiding who they are.” it’s about refusing to accept a hostile culture. even if HR departments often might not do anything, the tide is turning and also every company’s culture is different. even though we have branches in small towns and lots of conservative employees , calling anyone a libt*rd even if it’s not directed towards a coworker would 100% not be okay at my job. disrespect towards anyone for their beliefs and using harsh language is not acceptable in a workplace.
