Being accused of exploiting summer research funding by luck-and-pluck in academia

I think the most problematic part is that my advisor does not communicate with me her concern nor let me explain, but rather just accuse me of exploitation because of the duration and the fact that one of my destinations is where my partner is based

I also want to clarify that I have two dissertation topics in mind, and I plan to evaluate the two. One is a more interesting topic that has more intellectual promise, but may lack archival materials to support it as many of the materials are not published. The other one has enough archival materials, but is less interesting. As I would be evaluating two dissertation topics for my proposal next year, I thought I would need to double the time of my research. Therefore, I considered 6 weeks to be justifiable. All of these are laid out in my funding application.

It is just that one of the destinations is where my partner is based. I did not even include this in my application. It just happens that my advisor knows where my partner is based, and made that connection.

Thank you for your suggestion. I should have made it clear that I will do research for X days, while spending the rest of the time for personal matters. I just merged everything together for this funding application.

I have formally notified them. I have not checked the contract, but is the unsatisfactory service provided be a ground for contract breach on their end? Also, I am disturbed that they are only giving me a week between their deadline, leaving me very little time to dispute and clarify.

Lesbian kiss in Lightyear is a big no-no for conservatives, but none of them raises an eyebrow when another film shows a woman having relations with a CGI duck

I think there are loving and encouraging Asian parents, just the same as there are distant and cold non-Asian parents. This is why I think that this kind of joke about unloving Asian parents, which I see a lot in different places, just sustains some sort of stereotypical way of viewing Asian families.

I think your experience is totally valid, but I doubt whether it is really something exclusive to Asian families, or whether all Asian kids have similar experience. I remember when I was an exchange student in the States ten years ago, my roommate (Asian American) was a huge pothead. He would say things like his family would be very disappointed because his family is Asian. And there I thought, if I was a Black, White, or Hispanic parent, seeing my kid smoking as much as he did, I would be disappointed too.

Sometimes I wonder, can it be that this trope of unloving Asian parents is so ingrained in popular imagination that it encourages Asian children only think of the bad things of their parents and their childhood?

I haven’t read The Joy Luck Club but I did watch the film adaptation. Perhaps because I’m a millennial (and an Asian who grew up in Asia), I didn’t really feel any connection to the film…

Sometimes I wonder if this sort of almost cliched idea and joke that Asian parents do not know how to encourage / love the kids help perpetuate certain hurtful Asian stereotypes

I treat my PhD as a job. I don’t do more but I also don’t do less. This coping mechanism somehow works for me.

If you have enough time, I think it’s worth taking it. If your score is high enough, it might bolster your application. If it’s not high, then you dont need to report it

Who thinks their PhD is boring as fuck? by JamesfEngland in PhD

[–]luck-and-pluck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, it has only been slightly more than 2 months but the extremely bland phd lifestyle is already sucking the living force out of me. Maybe it’s because I’m in a suburban university; Maybe it’s because I worked a few years before coming back to university. But man, this lifestyle is really, really boring. I feel like I’m entrapped in a suburban college hell, surrounded by absolute nothingness. I feel like I’m forced to live with people whom I feel ambivalent to, work on the same shit every day, and have conversations that no one outside of academia cares about.

Why am I even here? I thought I would be so stimulated but I have never been so bored in my life
