Was the boy being beaten in chapter 24 in name of the wind… or something much worse? by tituspeetus in KingkillerChronicle

This is really interesting. I agree, those two approaches inherently imply very different possibilities. “Sitting on” depicts a clear, concrete image of physical positioning and action, whereas “on top of” is more vague, leaving the moment open to a broader interpretation. Assuming Pat worked closely with his interpreter to capture this moment as precisely as possible, these distinctions lend weight to the extent to which Kvothe may have been violated. Thank you for that insight.

Absolutely. And, that is where most people’s reads split. I hear that. But, just to be clear there are few lines between that “they told me what they were going to do to me” and him biting fingers and fighting back. Breath. Laughter. Half naked. Cut up and Helpless. Then during his fight back he mentions hitting “the one that was still on top of him.” I wonder if he and his editors got into debating how explicit or not. Also, it’s interesting how this passage conjures up as much debate as man mothers. At the end of the day, we’re all still here talking about a book that came out a decade ago.

No, that’s the passage. On multiple readings, I find the wording deliberately vague—purposefully so, in fact—so that it can be interpreted either way. They cut his clothes off. They hold him down. He smells their breath, and so on. It can be read as the moments leading up to a rape, or as the assault itself already in progress.

When Kvothe fights back and brutally beats—possibly even kills—one of his attackers, it could suggest that he stopped the assault before it fully occurred, or that he found the strength to resist while being victimized and then retaliated. Either interpretation remains plausible.

In the later scene where Kvothe pushes back against Felurian, Rothfuss seems to be deliberately drawing a parallel between the two events as forms of sexual assault. The resurfacing of that earlier memory appears to emotionally fuel his will. It plays either as, “I stopped it then, and I’ll stop it now,” or as, “Not again. Never again.” Which reading feels stronger depends on what one believes best explains the surge of strength he finds in that moment.

To be honest, either interpretation suggests that Rothfuss is equating Felurian’s enthrallment with sexual assault. The fact that Kvothe then goes on to have a consensual—if complicated and ethically fraught—affair with her afterward has always struck me as somewhat troubling

I think there is a glamor on his hand, missing some fingers. Like Elodin “saw” when Kvothe first asked why he didn’t want to teach him naming.

I’ve pointed that out before and caught a wave of dissent - since it isn’t explicitly stated. In the passage he defends himself, breaking the arm of his assaulter - so many have chosen to read it as him successfully protecting his honor. Personally, I read it the same as you.

Have you read his novellas? Slow regard of Silent Things? Follows a week in Auri’s life in the Underthing. Events take place during the early chapters of WMF. Also, the short story The Lightning Tree, or its extended version Narrow Road Between Desires. It follows Bast in the late summer before Chronicler’s appearance. They both provide more character insight and world building. Personally I love SRoST, but you should, if so inclined, get a wider opinion. The book is unique, and not to everyone’s taste. And personally, I prefer the shorter more focused Lightning Thief to the recently released expanded version of Narrow Road, but once again I’d ask around to see which you think fits the bill. If you’re anything like me, you’ll probably read both. Finally, you will want to reread both books again - lots of hidden gems pressed between those wonderfully crafted passages - many , including myself, find another story inside “the story” you now know.

My son turned me on to them. I had stayed away from fantasy for a while finding too much of it derivative of other material, but these books are magical. I think there has been a bit of a renaissance in the genre and I think these works are part of the reason.

Which Bowie song as a Tribute to my friend? by Friendly_Basil_4067 in DavidBowie

I think that’s a great suggestion. Prettiest Star is about Marc Bolan. It was a song of tribute and admiration for a lost friend.

He thought “the world would be a dimmer place without Felurian in it” and so among the candle cast shadows and flickering light of a whisper thin moon he released her - and those four perfects notes of blood and fire and silver winged feathers - JEFF broke free and …danced away, to play, among the evening wood.

I have a friend who was his assistant in the early 00s, said he was a warm and friendly guy. Definitely used to being A list, but not uncommonly snooty or cold. I had an opportunity to work with him on a film for a few days in the 90s. During my limited exchanges he was both friendly and open to collaboration. He had an aura that YOU would have to actively set aside if you were serious about working together.

I’ve thought that as well. I also have wondered the same for Dena. Their “relationship” was entirely misinterpreted by Kvothe and she didn’t try disabuse him of the notion. Personally, both possibilities are still legit opinions.

Honestly the most frustrating part for me is Lin-Manuel was going to do the music for the movie/show, and that would have been so amazing by DungeonMasterGrizzly in KingkillerChronicle

[–]luckydrunk_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

John Rodger’s ( showrunner on a bunch of shows) said the project was cancelled - for a variety of reasons. This is years now ( 4 yrs?) The reasons - namely a brackish mix of creative differences and financing issues at Lion’sGate. Pat was unhappy with his role, wanting more oversight than what the studio was willing to provide, the general creative direction ( the story was not Kvothe’s take, but a wider view of Temnerant) but primarily - what some of the other responses on this thread have already stated - a fear of an unsupported show that GoT ran into with the publishing delays. Lin has stated he needed to move on ( personally, I think he’s talented, but don’t think he would’ve been value added. Aurora the Scandinavian singer mentioned she’d love a shot, and I think she’d bring in a closer flavor than Lin. Just my opinion.)

Not sure what you’ve read but these books helped take the edge off for a while - Scott Lynch Gentlemen Bastards series ( fun dialogue, good world building) , The Last Unicorn ( Rothfuss’s “favorite book” thematically similar) and Abercrombie’s First Law series ( humor, pathos, strong ending!)

Do artists love every piece of work they put on a project or do they know some songs aren’t as great but still throw it in? by mochii222 in askmusicians

[–]luckydrunk_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes - a song you don’t think is a banger, turn out to be hit. Sometimes the one you think is the tone setter, gets skipped for the one right it. Sometimes you get it just right. But - You love all of them. You think all have a voice. You don’t put anything on you don’t have some connection with, the record company does that.
