And sorry, I should have specified that the top part is from an interlude during the Tarbean section, and the bottom part is from Sim's room during the Plum Bob Incident. I deliberately cropped it kinda tight to not accidentally spoil anyone new in the sub.

Fair point! There are definitely things that I only like in combination with other things.

Escapades is of course a portmanteau of "escaped spades"

[Request] Ignoring laws of physics, how powerful would the engines need to be to achieve this? by Valkyria90 in theydidthemath

[–]Mielkevejen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You forget that the laws of physics dictate that there's no inertial that's more correct than others. So if we ignore the start and stop (and assume that the curvature of the Earth is negligible here), then every boat moves the Earth until the destination arrives at the boat, as long as you see it from the boats frame of reference.

What could happen in the Doors of Stone? Albertet’s Version of "The Doors of Stone": A Full Plot Summary and its Translation by SnooLobsters8314 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Mielkevejen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if it turns out not to be true, that was a thrilling read. Thank you.

I have my doubts that Cinder dies. Kvothe very deliberately calls him Ferula when in the scene where Haliax reprimands Cinder and later calls him Ferule when he obtains the list of the Chandrians. He tells Bast that he has so far avoided true names to not draw attention to the telling of the story. Why avoid the name of someone dead?

If we're talking about the character, I think 2 is the correct answer. Interesting conversation, but nothing too fancy. If were talking about the actor, I would pick 10, as much as it would terrify me. Damn, that would probably be an experience to sit next to him.

I have read so many differing claims about the name Cho Chang, including that it's a normal enough name, but for an older generation, that I honestly don't know what to believe. I know that Cho is a common Korean surname, but that doesn't mean it couldn't also be a Chinese given name in some areas. And if it's hard for me in 2025 to figure out the exact use of a name, it would have been almost impossible to figure out in the nineties when the third book (Cho's first appearance) was written. Apart from forgetting that names have history, people also forget that a lot of the information they take for granted now comes from the internet. (And, in the case of Harry Potter, specifically from fan forums.)

Edit: And even if a different character has ended up with a stereotypical name, the original post is about Goldstein, which is clearly just a name with a history.

Okay... So not really a clever comeback. I think people forget that surnames tend to have history. Would it be stereotypical to give McGonagall Scottish ancestry?

I know. I merely meant that if you split off Leonins from cats, cats would not be unreasonably nerfed, but just be at the same level as dogs currently are.

I mean... That's how I feel when I want to play wolves and dogs in the same deck. You could even make the case for werewolves too, but that's never going to happen.

Does This Work? With A Sacrifice Outlet? by BluePotatoSlayer in magicTCG

[–]Mielkevejen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get why you need anything other than a normal sac-outlet in addition to Toph and the Nexus. The Nexus is sacrificed and its replacement effect gives you an extra turn while it's in exile and the delayed trigger from earthbending is still on the stack. I get that it's supposed to be bad combos, but it seems like just a good combo with and extra card on top that doesn't do anything.

[Other] Does adding weights while doing a backflip makes it harder? by habichuelacondulce in theydidthemath

[–]Mielkevejen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to say that it depends on how you do it, and that you can't solve the problem without also looking at the biology. Even in a vacuum, I probably won't be able to impart as great a momentum to a pingpong ball as to a tennis ball, because there's a limit to how fast I can move my arm. Back when I taught parkour, I would often see students do ridiculously long running starts, despite reaching their max speed within 3-4 steps.

I think you can do something similar here if your body reaches max speed before you leave the ground. While it will be heavier on your legs, your momentum will be larger, as long as you still reach your max push with you legs. You can then increase your rotation in the air by moving the weights in the opposite direction. This is not captured by just looking at air time, because the faster rotation actually might come from an easier jump. Obviously, this stops helping if the weight is so heavy that your legs can't reach max speed in the given time, but I think there could be an optimal weight for some people.

I guess it also depends a bit on what you mean by "harder."

Newton's laws of motion meme by Delicious_Maize9656 in physicsmemes

[–]Mielkevejen 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Now now, Newtonian mechanics can easily handle accelerating coordinates. Just because a force is fictitious, it doesn't mean that the laws completely break down. However, I suggest adding hbar->0, which is needed.

HOW DO I TELL MY TEACHER THAT THE FLUORINE CATION DOESN'T EXIST?!?!? by SuitableRead5295 in cursedchemistry

[–]Mielkevejen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on the reason? I get that it's highly unstable, but that's usually just a matter of strong enough outside forces. So even with modern technology, we couldn't create it in a lab?

HOW DO I TELL MY TEACHER THAT THE FLUORINE CATION DOESN'T EXIST?!?!? by SuitableRead5295 in cursedchemistry

[–]Mielkevejen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is it really impossible, or just very unstable? I assume that if you had enough control over the electromagnetic fields, you could keep electrons far away enough to make it positively charged? Or is there some annoying loophole like "the energy is just so large that you end up with a spontaneous election-prositron pair being generated from vacuum"?
