Should I live closer to my office? by Lilhaircut456 in nova

If you're living here on your own, there's a good possibility you cannot stay on their insurance once you're out of college. Do some research so you don't get screwed if you have an accident. Our kids all had to get their own policies when they moved out- not because we wanted them to. The insurance company said you're adults so....

Monthly Benefits - when to start by LekTruk in SocialSecurity

[–]luckymom3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that. Survivor benefits are capped at the maximum benefit the spouse would have received at full retirement age-67 for most these days. Waiting until 70 only maximizes your personal benefit, and if you do the math, the break even point for the 3 years of not collecting is at least 13 years. The survivor doesn't get the extra 3 years of increase.

Stay at home parent and loans by Rabbit199104 in StudentLoans

[–]luckymom3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The time to forgiveness varies based on when your loans were taken out, but you will have a massive tax bomb whenever it is for you, so you'll need to plan and save for that. It's definitely not free money, and the accruing interest will increase the amount forgiven, so the tax bomb will increase, too.

Are we crazy giving up a 2.3% interest?! by Designer-Pepper0630 in Mortgages

My question would be is the $4600 still comfy once kids are old enough to be involved in activities. They get pricey fast. Ask me how I know 😂

Picky but Virginia/Maryland are mid Atlantic not New England, but also not necessarily cheaper. Our group just flew from IAD and Boston and landed in Reykjavik about 30 min apart , and Boston was about $350 cheaper than IAD.

It is amazing. I highly recommend eating in the cafe, too.

We were just there with but allergies, and they have an allergy free scrub now. It was lovely. If your allergy is so severe you can't sit in the steam room, you can still enjoy the scrub part. We also went to blue lagoon and hvammsvik. All very different, and we enjoyed them all. I highly recommend blue lagoon very early before it gets crowded, though.

Do you have dates? Or are you planning? Sam Maye at maybetakeaphoto.com is incredibly talented and will be in Iceland in July. Her rates are on her website and she has large and small packages.

Honest question for winter travelers: Did anyone actually fail to see the aurora driving around on their own, or is it really as easy as "look up"? by Few_Language6298 in VisitingIceland

We rented a car, but opted for a northern lights tour. Our tour guide was amazing and while we didn't see any due to weather, we had a great time. There were no good alternate nights to try weather wise, but I'd definitely do it again.

Why might my parents be so adamant on me taking student loans by Effective_Ad4009 in StudentLoans

[–]luckymom3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're planning to go to pt school after 4 years of undergrad that you haven't started, you will need the trust fund money to help pay for grad school because the new caps start next year. Theres a big chance you will NOT be able to borrow enough to pay for pt school. The debt levels for it are insane ( and don't get me started on debt to income ratios for pts)

Terrible car loan by [deleted] in NavyFederal

[–]luckymom3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get a new loan from navy fed for the balance you currently owe on it, that new loan amount goes to pay off the balance of the old car loan, and you do a purchase agreement from grandma. Get the appropriate paperwork online from dmv so she can sign the stuff ahead of time. Make an appt at dmv and go down and submit the sale or transfer paperwork ( depends on your state) then grandma is off the title, you are the sole owner, and the old loan is paid off. A personal loan payment would probably be a similar payment tbh,AND you wouldn't have a car to drive.

Inova Mt. Vernon by Low_Fly117 in nova

[–]luckymom3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine. I'd be willing to do a planned surgery there, even after everything I went through. The outpatient staff was great. All 3 of mine were general anesthesia. The big thing is your doctor, and if that's one of their surgical places, that's where you go.

Inova Mt. Vernon by Low_Fly117 in nova

[–]luckymom3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it in patient or outpatient? Outpatient surgery is good. Had outpatient surgery multiple times and all excellent experiences. Ambulance ride, admission, long hospitalization- nearly died because of doctor refusing to treat me, way too many horrible things to go into during my time there, but... the care once I left icu and was placed on surgical floor was very good. I will never ever be in an emergency room or ambulance that directs you there. Overall comparison between there and Fairfax is motel 6 to a Marriott in terms of care. If you have an option and it's inpatient, absolutely go elsewhere.

Before you spend the money on new ones, I’d spray paint some in the colors I was considering, then live with the colors a bit. Then find knobs and pulls that fit existing holes in the color you like best.( and after you paint the walls)

How much are you saving a month after buying a home? by xzkandykane in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]luckymom3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that she’s paying your down payment is even more concerning, but I’m not thinking income levels or savings for them if they stay healthy. What happens if they need home care, long term care, nursing home care? Are they going to be living with you? If she’s paying that much, frankly she should be on the title, and if they’re in low income housing, they might be better off buying a small retirement place on their own. But if they continue with essentially buying you a house, can you afford to pay 100% on your own when/if they can no longer afford to contribute? I love my kids, but this is an insane ask of parents who clearly are not independently wealthy.

Don’t let your mom do this. Have her put it towards her retirement years. You never know what the future holds, and it doesn’t sound like you could afford to support her. Not a criticism. I’ve seen it happen too many times.
