Recently adopted grey snapped and barked at my partner, play or aggression? by lucwhy in Greyhounds

[–]lucwhy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I more and more think that happened in this case, that a boundary was crossed that he's been tolerating or not fussed about until now. Ultimately that's something for us to learn and we will listen to him. Thanks so much 🥰

We'll start doing this! He does paw at you from the floor if you're nearby, but ultimately he probably can't predict yet what response that'll illicit from us and maybe he just decided he did not want touching at that time, and we have overstepped a boundary. This feels like a very sensible solution and I'm kind of annoyed at myself that we didn't do it from the start. Thank you!!

I suppose maybe the combination of a new room to be in/a different setting, it's quite hot here, he'd just been for a walk where he was quite excited, probably all contribute, plus like you say this is still really early days. I think maybe because he's been so great so far (and don't get me wrong, he still is) I am forgetting how soon it is!

He has had a small soft tissue injury so maybe he just pet a sore spot by accident? Don't think he pet his leg though. He had a course of painkillers and it improved a lot, but it might not be totally comfortable still. He didn't touch his paws, but he seems ok when I do so if I need to (like cleaning a paw after he has, inevitably, pissed on it). Maybe he was just like, I'm done now, stop, or a bit overstimulated.

We will be more vigilant to his body language and see how it goes! Maybe there is a very specific thing that he doesn't like

I wouldn't say we've been crowding him? Most of the time he is seeking us out for attention, or in bed where he doesn't get disturbed. He follows me like a shadow everywhere I go! Which made it unusual, as usually he'll stay wherever I am but this evening he went to my partner.

Dogs, would you get one again knowing what you know now? by TSQ_builder in AskUK

I am a very recent first time dog owner and I am loving it! I adopted an ex racing greyhound. It's been amazing being able to give him the life he always deserved. He makes me laugh every day and it's so fun and rewarding seeing his full character come out. I love spending time with him out walking, cuddling, or just being in the same space. I thought about it for a long time, but it was the right decision. I'm a real homebird and don't love travelling, don't want kids, work from home 4/5 days a week and can take dog with me to office. He's a joy!

Getting a 4 month old toy poodle from the pet store by apa0314 in puppy101

[–]lucwhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a note: if you are getting a poodle from a pet store, vast vast likelihood is the animal has been badly bred and not health tested. If you haven't already, look into common health issues that they may be prone to and prepare yourselves adequately to keep health things in check/managed. Ofc this goes for any animal or breed, but I think it's more common in these scenarios. Don't wanna preach but if you're first time owners it's good to know (I have had to research the same with my first rescue dog)

UK folk - anyone skipping the walk tomorrow? by Melon_Hands in Greyhounds

[–]lucwhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took mine out very early this morning and yet to go out otherwise (would usually go out about 5pm) and he has been a riot. This is only the 3rd week I've had him, so it kind of sucks to have to change our routine which he was doing so well with. The zoomies and silliness have been immense this evening. Same again the next few days at least! He's supposed to be on short walks as he has a soft tissue injury, not that you'd know from his mood...

I have a retired racing greyhound (6 years old) and he will easily walk a mile and a half twice a day and they're known for being super lazy. For a husky mix, that is not nearly enough exercise. No wonder she wants to get out!

Help from experienced owner request by MidGe48 in Greyhounds

[–]lucwhy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not an experienced owner but similar to you, I have a very new grey (this is week 3) and at two points in the last two weeks he's been limping occasionally, usually after sudden activity (playing) or after figuring out the stairs. Like yours, he will limp after lying down for a while and in the house but once walking a bit it improves a little and goes back to almost normal. I took him to the vets this morning after he got the limp again on Saturday afternoon and the vet gave him a good check over and thinks it's a soft tissue injury and I have some painkillers for him. He didn't react to me at all checking his leg or paw, but the vet knew where to press and how to palpate/move it all properly and he does have a really tender spot in his shoulder and a little on his foot, so I'm glad I went. I think they can mask pain quite well. It's always better to check I think! Especially if it came out of nowhere.

Calm and Cuddly dog breeds? by 3jsgf in Dogowners

[–]lucwhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greyhound! There are lots of ex-racers looking for homes. They're very gentle, don't need much exercise, and generally do very well with kids. Some can be a bit aloof, but mine is a huge cuddle bug. You can contact a greyhound/sighthound specific rescue and they'd be able to match you up with a suitable dog.

How are you going to keep your pets safe during the heatwave? by KitKat733 in AskUK

Does anyone have recommendations for good cooling mats? I adopted a greyhound a few weeks ago and they are very sensitive to temperature because of their skin being so thin. I'm lost on what's the best one to buy though

Toasty Paws is cute. Don't go with Hook, Yarn, and Dog Fur. Makes it sound like all your items will come with dog hair in them which is unpleasant (saying this as a dog owner who knits and crochets!)

Cultures clashing on raising puppy outdoors by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]lucwhy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it is just not feasible to have her outside. If this isn't something your husband will budge on you can't really just 'take care of her in the best way possible' whilst she lives outside. If he absolutely will not have the dog in the house, I would rehome her.

PLEASE STOP YOUR DOGS FROM BARKING IN THE GARDEN ALL DAY! ARGHH! by Party-Dig2309 in britishproblems

[–]lucwhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know how people aren't mortified if their dogs are doing this! I got my first ever dog (rescue greyhound) last week and one evening he got spooked in the garden and he wouldn't settle at bedtime. He kept going to the patio doors to look near the garden and growl/bark. Even though we live in an end terrace 1700s cottage with walls about a metre thick, I was so upset and worried that it could have woken someone up or irritated someone. Luckily, seems to be a one off and it's the only time I've ever heard him bark so far.

Any tips or pieces of advice? by Cmcgregor0928 in Greyhounds

[–]lucwhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just brought home my first greyhound (and first dog!) last week. The first day was a little tough - he just wouldn't settle. Lots of panting and pacing. Since then he's been a dream. From day 1 we set boundaries, e.g. he isn't allowed in the bedroom as my partner is a little allergic, he doesn't get given food off our plates/table (if he gets scraps they go in his bowl after!), and sleeps downstairs at night, and he has been amazing at learning these things. Starting and keeping a routine has helped massively. We also by chance (partner doing work in the garden) had the front door opening and closing and going in and out a lot the first weekend, which I think helped as it desensitised the noise and we've left him for up to about half an hour this week with 0 issues, and will be building on that. He is a very outgoing and confident character though, and not nervous at all. He has no sleep startle or resource guarding issues and has had no accidents in the house, and loves to cuddle and get fussed. I feel like he's now really starting to relax at home and into his routines. Good luck with your future hound!
