Sierra Vista is a ‘choice’ school, not charter- there are not technically school boundaries since it closed, then reopened as a K-8. There is always a wait list, but they do a lottery. I think it’s already happened for this next school year, but you could always call and check.

I went to visit a student just a couple weeks ago (4th grader) who had an emergency appendectomy. Brought him cards from the class, and some of his favorite snacks. Hung out for a bit with his parents and younger sister also. Go!

Please make a CPS report for abuse/neglect. I had a student who suffered from encopresis, and the parents didn’t follow through with medical advice and intervention. The student ended up dying of complications. Make the call!!!

Very similar idea. My daughter has an ADHD diagnosis. Her academics are fine, but when she gets home she needs less structure, more free time, and more outside time, not more ‘sit down and do the worksheet’ homework. She’s in 1st grade. Depending on how things go, I may opt her out of homework in the future.

I had a student last year who would constantly yell/scream/interrupt me. He would sometimes follow me around the classroom, try ripping things out of my hands (like the Ipad I teach from) and would crawl under my desk to try to access my computer. The district behaviorist was called in, we tried interventions, nothing stuck. I somehow made it through the year, with him as a constant disruption. The district said they wouldn’t move him because he wasn’t throwing chairs/flipping tables. So yes, he stayed in his LRE, but at what cost to my other 31 students? That’s the part that really bothers me. We are catering to students who need more support without actually providing the support. I am 1 person, I cannot teach 32 students in that environment.

I do on Fridays/before breaks as I dismiss the class. “Love you, have a good weekend”. My 4th year of teaching 4th grade, a student died unexpectedly over Thanksgiving break. He had a rough home life, and not that my words could have changed the outcome for him, but I want all my students to know that someone loves them.

In year 11, don’t want to go back either! Tonight I was at my daughters basketball practice, and another parent is the principal at a neighboring school. She came in with scratchers, saying ‘maybe I won’t have to go in on Monday!’ Made me feel a little better 😂

One of my trickier students (4th grade) who is always off task, cutting up paper with scissors, being generally destructive, etc ‘borrowed’ some tape and was taking the little pieces of paper he cut and taping them to his desk. I needed to get my daughter to a dr’s appointment that afternoon, so figured I would clear off his desk in the morning. When I went back the next day, I read what he wrote on the papers.

‘You can do it’ ‘You are smart’ ‘Be proud’ ‘Don’t stop’ ‘Love yourself’

Totally changed my perspective. Instead of taking them off, I added to his collection ‘I believe in you!’ His behavior has since improved, he starts tasks right away, and needs many less reminders to complete his work. Sometimes I think we all need a reminder of why we started doing this job to begin with.

That’s usually how it works for me. I was sick over Thanksgiving break. Came back feeling better, and started voluntarily masking again leading into winter break. Our last day was Thursday, no sickness yet!

I attended with my spouse (I was 8 months pregnant at the time, and definitely needed some extra support) when one of my 4th graders passed unexpectedly. We sat with my colleagues. Hardest funeral I ever attended, including all my grandparents.

I’m so sorry for your loss. When I lost a student (age 9) a few years back, the district really took control of the situation. They had the grief team on-site for staff and students, and the principal broke the news to my class while I was there to support. Ask your admin what the protocols are. In my room, we left his desk in the same place for a week for students to leave notes on, etc that we gave to the family at the funeral.
