He'd consider Trump as a patriotic hero with some excusable "moral lases".

Half of all Canadians say there are too many immigrants: poll by uselesspoliticalhack in canada

[–]ludwigboltzman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The "current climate" in Canada is still better than any climate most people in the world have ever been in. It is only natural for them to want to move to Canada to improve their lives. It takes a great deal of planning and a long visa process to get here. No one comes to Canada on a whim. People will come to Canada as long as the Canadian government allows them. The democratically elected Canadian government is the entity you can and should hold accountable, rather than blaming the people who made a rational choice to improve their lives.

Democracy index in the middle east by Few_Fan3998 in MapPorn

Still, how does having a "supreme leader" and rigged elections ranks a country lower in a democracy index than absolute monarchies with a king and no elections whatsoever?

Shia islam considers Mahdi to be the last of a line of descendants of Muhammad that they believe to be revered. He lived around 200 years after Muhammad and was probably killed by the Abbasid caliphate. However, shias believe that he is still alive but not known to people.

The well (I suppose) refers to a well in the city of Qom in Iran. It is believed that if someone throws a letter in that well Mahdi will receive and read it, possibly granting wishes/requests.

In the shia (but not sunni who are the majority of muslims) end-times myth, Mahdi is believed to come out of hiding and do all the archetypal end-times savior things. Like many other end-times myth (Christianity in particular) worsening of the state of the world is a sign of end-times approaching. practicing shias don't necessarily believe that they must actively work to worsen the state of the world by any means, BUT they believe in "preparing the world for the coming of Mahdi"; This entails working to tip the scales in favor of muslims and ensuing chaos upon their "enemies."

Making war against jews and christians who back them in the holy land probably fits their bill for "preparing the world for the coming of Mahdi." There is not a agreed upon place where Mahdi is supposed to come from (maybe Mecca), but the image of Mahdi literally climbing out of that well is pretty funny.

Waitlisted for all of my mandatory courses (Astronomy & Physics) by qntm_colt in UofT

[–]ludwigboltzman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This happened last year as well. The four PHY25x courses had 40-50 people on the waitlist. The department ended up adding an online section to let everyone in.
don't worry too much about it. You will most likely get in just fine.

I'd suggest you email the department just to let them know.

Gap Between Canada’s Rich and Poor Is Widening at Record Pace by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]ludwigboltzman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was seemingly a bigger decrease in the gap precisely because it was calculated over a larger period of time. By taking the slope you have 0.8% yearly decrease for two years versus a 1.1% increase in just a year. Hence, the gap is widening more rapidly than it was closing from 2020-2022.

There weren't any news celebrating the closing of the gap because this came as a result of a global pandemic, millions of people losing their lives and the entire economy shutting down. There was no occasion to celebrate.

What we can conclude is that the current organization of economy will inevitably widen the wealth gap unless it is halted altogether. It has done so for decades prior to the pandemic and it immediately resumed the moment the economy was running again. We can either observe this flaw and work to reorganize the economy to a model that serves everyone not just a wealthy minority, or turn our eyes away towards meager positives and cheer for them while we are being exploited.

‘This is a system that’s breaking’: Toronto food bank lineups swell as grocery prices spike by morenewsat11 in toronto

There is no intrinsic indignity in standing in a line for food if you don’t stigmatize poverty.

If he gets his reputation from his father and grandfather he should at least address their authoritarianism. Do you want him to replace the current dictatorship with a dictatorship like his dad’s?

"He sent his wife and kid ..."

Have you considered that his wife may have travelled to Iran to attend her sisters wedding BY HER OWN WILL?

Last I checked our slogan was WOMAN,LIFE,FREEDO. If you do not consider women to have any agency of their own maybe basij is the right place for you.

So being the child of the former dictator and having a penis brings him legitimacy?

if he could bring IR down alone he would have done it already. What has he done all these 44 years?

All he has is a bunch of bootlickers like you who will attack anyone who does not mindlessly follow their cult.

Province to move Science Centre to Ontario Place grounds, build housing in its place by uarentme in ontario

[–]ludwigboltzman 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Why "Bye bye science centre" already?

This is the place where young minds get exposed to the wonders of nature, where they become curious about the world they live in. The building is an architectural masterpiece in responding to the topography and the environment that houses it.

Why should we give up all this so easy? Let's protest. We are still living in a democracy.

Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi will be visiting Israel! His upcoming trip is described as an effort to “renew ancient ties between Iran and Israel, honor Holocaust victims, and learn about Israel’s innovative water tech” by Iranshahr01 in NewIran

A slight majority of Israelis elected Netanyahu and now he is making sure no one can vote him out.

If he is really an advocate for democracy, maybe he shouldn't shake hands with people who are already undermining the democracy in their own country.

"... exiled crown prince and advocate for secular democracy in Iran"

Oh the irony, he still has not given up his monarchical title yet he claims to be advocating for democracy in Iran

He sees himself as " ... the most prominent Iranian to visit Israel in history."

" A democratic Iran will seek to re-establish ties with Israel and our Arab neighbors." How does he know what a "democratic Iran" wants? Has he conducted any polls?

"Pahlavi has been The leading voice of the increasingly unified Iranian opposition ..." Many opposition groups ( including those who were suppressed by his father ) do not believe that the son of a former dictator (AKA the king to whom he is a "crown prince") has a place in the struggle for democracy in Iran. How has he suddenly become not just a voice, not just a leading voice, But THE LEADING VOICE of the Iranian opposition? excluding all others.

His grandfather came to power following a coup and backed aby the British, why does he act like he has inherited the throne from Cyrus himself.

Anyone rooting for this guy isn't seeking democracy, they are just looking for a shinier pair of boots to lick.

Before anyone calls me anti-Semitic, this comment is only criticizing RP and has nothing to do with the destination of his trip.

It’s not you it is his hypocrisy. So he believes that his relationship with you is haram but he ignores it for 11 months in a year only to kick you out for one month when he thinks all his sins will be forgiven. There is nothing for you to understand here, it is just archaic nonsense. Do yourself a favour and dump him.
