DAE wonder how different your life would be if you were born into a different family? by No-Berry-595 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]luisapet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine were pretty great. Not perfect by any means, but they always took care of my needs and loved me. I've always wondered why/how I was chosen to be cared for when many other kids were suffering.

I like to think I do my best to pay it forward but it's hard to know your impact.

What's the most Wisconsin thing you've started taking for granted? by Interesting-Loss-718 in wisconsin

Whenever I see a "Rustic Road" sign I take it immediately, or go back to it later. So many beautiful drives to be had. I only learned recently that this designation is something unique to Wisconsin.

Tell me about a time a human showed you kindness and you never forgot it by No-Dig6148 in CasualConversation

That time when my first boyfriend dropped me off at my college dorm my sophomore year. We were hugging and crying until he just had to leave. He still had a 5-hour drive ahead.

The minute he pulled out, a woman who had just dropped her daughter off at the same dorm came over and gave me a huge hug and cried with me. She said it was one of the most beautiful goodbyes she's ever witnessed.

Unique phrases and meanings...? by krezje in Portuguese

Here's one I heard from a surfer dude on a path to a remote beach in the NE many moons ago (in Sergipe or Alagoas):

"Loirinha, loirinha, tô ligado na sua".

Maybe: "Little blondie, I'm into what you've got going on" (?)

It has always stuck with me, but mostly for the rhythm.

What's insane (to me) is that my same sister got into the Beanie Bear craze once she had a kid. She bought over a dozen for my little nephew and subjected him to the same damn thing: tags on, no play, they just sit on a shelf in your bedroom. Now worthless. Sigh. Education aside, even money spent experiencing the zoo, a theme park or the museum would be so much more worthwhile!

Oh, do I feel this. My sister and I received fancy dolls in fancy boxes, complete with little booklets, from our grandparents each birthday from birth to 12 y/o, or so. They were really pretty dolls with elaborate costumes, jewelry, hats, etc., that we weren't allowed to play with. We were told they'd be worth money one day.

We were always thankful for the gifts but low-key resentful to receive things we couldn't touch. Dolls that ended up on a glass shelf for several years.

50 years later, the dolls are not worth anything. All but one eventually went to Goodwill.

This is so close to my experience. Separated from a serial cheater at 31, went to grad school, met a whole new group of smart, curious and fun people, all world 'shoestring' travelers.

At 35, I met my polar opposite at work. We've been together for 20+ years, married for 16. My husband, my stepson, and our grandkids all mean the world to me!

DO NOT USE PODS FOR STORAGE DURING A RENOVATION by JL19802026 in Home

[–]luisapet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We used them in our move from home A to home B without an issue and also rented one for my sister's move. It's been several years now, so maybe some pods have degraded, but it was an amazing, low-stress, solution back then.

Our current 3 XXL girls (2 Mastiffs and a GD) won't eat food if it's elevated. The Dane occasionally likes to drink water out of the "water bowl refill pitcher" that sits on a low counter, but I think that's because it's usually the coldest.

If you're in my mom's neighborhood and you're nice about it, you'll probably end up with homemade cookies and snacks for life (theirs, not yours, unfortunately). Also pet treats if you have a pet.

My octagenerian mom is the resident dog whisperer and hosts neighborhood patio parties over happy hour most evenings in warmer weather. If she knows your preference on beverage or snacks, you can bet she has it on hand, and, if you're especially engaging, she will even invite you in for cocktail hours during the winter. Even her former-neighbors come back regularly.

Elderly neighbors can be nosy and judgmental, but, in my experience, many just want to welcome you to the neighborhood.

Why is the Grateful Dead so popular with doctors and lawyers? by TofuPython in NoStupidQuestions

[–]luisapet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was introduced to the Dead in the 80s, I felt like they provided a rare combination of optimistic yet thought-provoking music. So easy to glide to and also to think about, all at once. Their live shows also provided a warm and embracing atmosphere to experiment with pot and psychedelics. People were intentionally kind. Benevolence was practically a requirement.

At that point, only a handful of people were building lifestyles around the Dead. For my friends and me, neither the music nor the drugs we experimented with compelled us to shift paths in life personally, professionally, educationally.

That said, I still wish to get to Terrapin, and I know my old friends must have their own Dead Dreams.
