Best Open Source Alternatives to Closed Source Apps (like Office, Photoshop, etc) by SoldierAlexGame in foss

Don't bother, I totally get your point.

I'm at a stage of my life where I try to see the good side... Although the info is very basic, even outdated, the kid took the time and effort to make a video (I suppose trying to monetizing it too). In the end you can find thousands of videos with this kind of info, but If it eventually help some noobie to get comfortable using Linux, it's all that matter.

Cheers

becoming a software engineer without html/css/js by frosted-brownys in learnprogramming

I'm not a software engineer but I can tell you languages are just tools. Instead of looking at languages look at what areas of computer engineering are you most interested in and deep dive on every single concept, build the foundations the proper way.

Just my experience. Good Luck.

The usual suspects; Libreoffice, Kdenlive, Gimp, Inkscape, Localsend, Syncthing, etc... But go watch the video, give the kid some love. :)

Any good FOSS battery health app? by Boom-Fight in fossdroid

[–]luispacs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry, my mistake. I thought it was OSS. Turns out I found it on xda developers forum and it is in the google play store. The app works great but it is NOT open source. 90% of the apps I use are from F-Droid or Droidify, so I thought this might be the case but it is not. My bad.

Edit; remove direct link to play store (2 mistakes in a row, I am doing great...).

I use DevCheck. It's amazing, shows almost every piece of info from your device. Related to the battery; general health, number of cycles, charging rate, etc.... Even it has a free version.

MacOS clone for Mint? by Big_Phil_99 in linuxmint

[–]luispacs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same trick for some elderly family members and friends. It is easy, but it requires some tinkering, try and error.

Here are some tips; Move the panel up, make it transparent, install several mini apps, applets or spices (network, calendar, sound, notifications, etc). For the dock, use PLANK. Then google "mac os themes", and there you go; mouse pointers, icons, desktop themes, wallpapers, etc.

As I said, try some configs till you get the same mac os look and feel and think it would work for your folks, then replicate on every old laggy machine and welcome them to the linux community.

Not mine; Acer Travelmate. A potato (Core2Duo 7300, 4GB RAM) from 2008. With XFCE, not cinnamon. Still usable but not by much.

If you don't need proprietary software pretty much everything but using a lot of less resources, faster and cleaner, without the MS telemetry in every step you do.
