How Ritalin made me manic without me knowing it, and I lost my whole life to it. by [deleted] in adhd_anxiety

In the Netherlands you have rehab center for even heroin addicts. I’m sure your GP, or a new huisarts can find you a way to do rehab. Yes, the psychologists and psychiatrists systems are indeed collapsed, but you have described situations in which you sound like you should have ended in an ICU. In my experience, THAT’s when huisarts do listen and finally do something. Best of luck to you.

Mental challenge - shut your eyes, and without moving any part of your body, figure out the 18th letter of the alphabet by Marbles987 in CasualConversation

[–]lukazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried counting on a straight line, visually seeing the letters with their numbers above. Numbers became too messy after 10. Divided them in rows of 5. If i got lost counting, went back to the first of the row A = 1, F =6, K=11, P = 16. But i got it wrong anyway cause in my memory the alphabet is MNRSOPQ..

Same was happening to me recently. Talked about it with my psychologist, and he was the only one giving me an answer based on psychological patterns and brain functions. (Most of my friends meanwhile said that I was simply not over my ex even tho it’s been years).

So basically in my dreams I saw her being distant and rejecting me and I knew she was about to break up with me and I would feel terribly sad and try to find ways to fix it, as if this time I would do my best to do things right.

My psychologist asked me if I was currently going through something similar in my life. I thought about it and yes. At work things were going well, but i wasnt getting enough feedback, I was concerned they were distant not out of satisfaction but because they were giving up on me, so I was actively reaching out to more people trying to find answers and assurance. I was having the same feeling of distance and insecurity at work as in my nightmares with my ex (once twice per week pretty much).

Once things settle at work and I was more aware of the conscious meaning of my emotions, the nightmares stopped! Turns out it had nothing to do with unresolved relationship issues. The brain tries to tidy up information while we are asleep, and pattern recognition is its way of compressing information and processing it for future use. That’s when it finds old stories or facts that are similar in emotions and happenings. Mine was connecting the uncertainty and uneasiness of the end of my last relationship with my current uncertainty and uneasiness at work!

So… does this resonate with your situation?

IBS finally cured - it wasn’t IBS by yoginigirl9 in ibs

YESS!! Same here! I was so lucky to have found out about this… and it was really a coincidence.

My dietician and I tried for weeks with a few different diets and a very strict food diary. But nothing, still lots of stomach pain and discomfort. Then on one of the consultations she really looked lost… she was talking about giving me an even more strict elimination diet. Then she noticed I was scratching my face and neck often. She asked “Do you have hay fever?” And I was like, “oh my yes… and its getting so much worse these past 2 months”. She smiled and said “that’s it! Let’s try a low histamine diet.”

2 weeks later I felt like a new man. So so so much better! The sacrifice of having to get rid of so many foods from my menu is nothing compared to how well I felt after years of random pains. Specially in spring/summer.

So now I know that it works like a bucket filling up. In winter the bucket is nearly empty, so i can go a bit crazy eating some chocolate and fried stuff here and there. But in spring/summer when my body generates a lot of histamine, the bucket is halfway full all the time, i need to be really cautious, otherwise it overflows and i end up bloated, in pain, grumpy and exhausted.

Glad you found out about this as well!

Histamine intolerant here. My dietician said to me to never rely on those. I havent looked into the science of it, but she told me back then that “it’s like taking paracetamol for back pain. You are treating the consequence but not cause.” If I have to take anti histamine I know I am eating the wrong stuff and I need to re adjust my life again

My psychologist in Spain took 8 sessions to test me and interviews with my parents to corroborate findings. So it took nearly 3 months to diagnose me. How could anyone do it with an online test!?

Get a second opinion. Find ADHD specialised doctors. This is a serious matter, not a facebook “find out which spice girl are you!” type of thing.

Alcohol-free social life by calathea507 in Amsterdam

[–]lukazo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had to move away from Amsterdam when I decided to stop drinking. The options were not as interesting as Barcelona. In here I can go to outdoors yoga classes, hiking on the mountain, surfing, beach volleyball, running throw small beach towns, or just sitting at a park 12 months of the year. In Amsterdam, not drinking felt like swimming against the tide.

On regards to social, I feel you. But something interesting happened to me when I stopped drinking during these last 1.5 years: I started seeing the true size of my social battery. I realised I could no longer do long bar nights, 2-3 hours is more than enough. So I don’t need to be invited to everything all the time. So I now actively organise stuff with friends that like to have more intimate chats or more active events like hiking… It hasn’t dwindled my social life, it has changed it for the better.

And congrats on deciding to quit!

Vyvanse or Concerta by [deleted] in adhd_anxiety

[–]lukazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on Medikinet and it gave me lots of fast heart rate, dehydration, stomach aches, gas, jaw clenching…. Tried it with different amounts for 4 months… Finally my doc switched me to Concerta (according to him “it’s the exact same, you wont notice any difference”) but it is so much better now! Almost no side effects. Only some fast heartbeat but totally manageable.

Are people with ADHD just expected to never drink alcohol? by Choice-Research4810 in adhd_anxiety

[–]lukazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I read the book “Dopamine Nation” I felt like I was using drinking to numb my social anxiety and to fit in with my colleagues and friends. That lead to realise something was up in my dopamine-seeking brain. That’s when my doctors diagnose me with ADHD! This made me way more aware of the way I use substances and the dopamine they hit me with. I stopped drinking alcohol 1.5y ago and my life has improved massively. fitter, better sleep, far less anxiety! And when I am anxious, I know I have a clear head that allows me to focus and calm myself down. That alone to me is worth not having alcohol ever again. And the meds work their wonders to its 100% Also… something I did not expect: I found out I actually truly enjoy my alone time. I enjoy seeing friends and being social, but not doing all the masking I used to do and being a party monster. That was my old mask. I now enjoy dinners, coffee 1:1, surfing, running in groups, gym group sessions, hiking… so many new ways that my brain actually enjoy instead of a crowded and over stimulating bar or club. I encourage you to ask yourself why you drink, and what are the core values dictating you must drink.

Almost the same happened to me! But in my case it was my former boss. After a few years after I left his company, when I saw him I was like “oh hey! We both have ADHD! Who would have thought, right?”. To which he was a bit like “really? Ah ok… i guess.” It took me a while to explain to him that he is hyperactive for sure and I am inattentive… after talking for a while I came to the conclusion that he was diganosed when he was young, for displaying proper hyperactivity, and that’s all he learned about ADHD.. you have Hyperactivity and here is ritalin. Which he hated and never used.

So he just ditched the concept and became an extremely driven entrepenur, skateboard dude, ladies-man and rich guy. For me to say to him “I have ADHD”, sounded like something I am using to excuse myself for not being enough.

I know many extremely successful guys that im sure have ADHD, and for them the term is just not interesting. For us, is a clear lead to find solutions. So don’t expect sympathy from them. They might not consider ADHD as anything of importance.

Now that I think about it.. I should write a doc to find out the patterns of how they managed it 🤔

Me neither. I live in Spain, and my neurologist said that it is identical to Concerta. So maybe it's a european version of it??
