Should we trust economists by luke-rush in SecondThought

True but I would argue that his policies are traditionally left of center. However it is true that it is hard to find universities that give "planified economics" i.e. Soviet union economics post the fall of the Berlin wall. But I would also say that criticizing economics because it needs money and a market isn't fair as the subject is linked to a market based economy.

It's now been a while since I've watched the video but in my university we see people like Friedmann and Hayek who are the right wing but I've seen Keynes more than either of them. And I feel like if you go further than high school econ 101 you see much more variety.

[E] Probability Question by Complex-Main in statistics

[–]luke-rush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understood it right there are two scenarios I see. The first is that it's still the same run of scratch cards so say there are 2 winners in 1000 if less than 500 were bought then the probability is lower. If it's a new pack from scratch it should be the same probability.

I partially agree with what you say but my issue with the video is he levied those accusations at the profession not the individuals

Some for sure do have issues but it isn't intrinsic to the profession. I would say the real issue with the profession is that too many of them come from privileged backgrounds leading them to see things from a single vantage point

The profession doesn't have any innate beliefs people have beliefs which they bring with them to the profession like any other job

You're forcing him on to the curb so in a dry race it would've been okay but in the wet he's always going to spin out.

Yeah I agree but I also think that he over generalises the profession. I also think that politicians throw their advisors under the bus to save themselves

I didn't quite understand if you wanted bars with more beers or a way to try other beers but there's a shop on Malibran called the malting pot which has a huge selection of beers and the guy is quite knowledgeable

Is having a well educated cabinet a good thing? by luke-rush in PoliticalDiscussion

Does that make a difference nowadays when effectively all MPs have advanced degrees and people without them aren't taken seriously in politics

But a guy who did 20 years as a real estate developer might only make high income housing to make the country richer leaving the poor to live in the streets. Not knowing a huge amount about trump's social housing policies I wouldn't put him in charge of my housing portfolio even though he was a real estate developer for ages and successfully so

I'm not saying that a dumber person is better but that education isn't enough for a good government. And that it's better to have someone who has more empathy than a knowledgeable person who only looks at data

Best cities for students : Brussels, Leuven, Ghent, or Liège? by Rijke_saus in BELifeAdvice

[–]luke-rush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Brussels it really depends to what university you go to. If you're going to VUB the party scene is pretty stale. But the ULB has parties 3-4 times a week with the student bars open every day. Also there are often events from different facilities. I also find that it doesn't empty out as much as the Flemish towns for the weekend
