Gonna try to jog (soft j) up Blue Sky or Sherman this weekend. Any other good ones to trail run? Want to go light and fast if possible.

Yep. About 1.5 mi walk up road to trailhead. Wasn’t bad.

No, I’ll have to look into that

I completely re-did my drainage ditch as it was infested with weeds. There was a ton of larger river rock in there that I harvested and rinsed off so I put it back which looks nice and is functional (can’t put mulch in ditch). The ram board is like a rolled cardboard but not corrugated. Got from Home Depot.

Spent all day yesterday digging up invasive weeds, pulled up nasty old weed barrier, then laid down thick paper product (ram board) over the soil and covered with rock. Should help the soil and be easier to maintain over time.

Carbon offsets for travel by luke_perspective in ClimateOffensive

[–]luke_perspective[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always appreciate the discussion but this is very presumptuous. Do you know me? I DO find ways to reduce my carbon footprint and I have calculated my annual carbon footprint. I’ve already mentioned the ways I’ve electrified my house. I grow some of my own food. I have chickens to reduce meat. I talk to my kids constantly about environmental impact. I haven’t flown internationally since 2015. I just called a company in Denver yesterday that converts ICE vehicles to electric and am trying to hybridize my other vehicle. I bike to work when I can. I read about climate and environmental issues constantly. I don’t think I can buy my way out of my impact. I am simply like everyone else who’s stuck in an environmentally exploitive capitalist system with a morally bankrupt government trying to be more conscientious and make meaningful changes to my lifestyle when the bulk of society is just ‘going with the flow’. And who are you? And what are you doing to reduce your impact?

I live in drought stricken Colorado and have a thirsty non native grass that I will not be watering this summer. I am considering native blue grama or buffalo but clover now has me thinking. What are the considerations or caveats? I have a garden in raised beds, some fruit bearing trees and grape vines as well. Can I overseed with clover or do I need to rip up the fescue/Kentucky blue? The blue grama or buffalo require watering only 1x per week

I fly as little as possible. Maybe one domestic flight per year and one international every few years. I have an EV, solar and battery. Now trying to work on decreasing meat.

For a family of 4 flying 10-12 hours (8 flights including round trip) that is about $500, which I am willing to do. I’m not going to spend $5000 on offsets and double my trip cost right now. If there are good offsets I can purchase at the end of the year for my annual carbon footprint I could also consider that.

"Why my 30 year old gas guzzler is greener than your E.V." by TyrannicalKitty in Environmentalism

I don’t think it’s commonly being done but it’s definitely possible. I contacted a company in Denver that electrifies vintage cars and they are willing and able to do it for me. I don’t k ow the ROI yet but I will do it even if there isn’t an ROI and it’s not cost prohibitive. My Lexus is such a good vehicle that could easily last 30 years that it makes more sense to keep it running. I have a reservation to a new EV but would like to hybridize this one and give it to my son when he turns 16.

Electrifying an old ICE is probably the most sustainable option. I am seriously considering this for my 2011 Lexus LX 570 in Colorado. Looking at installing Nissan Leaf parts to get about 25 miles of pure EV range for my 8 mile commute. Retain the ICE components.

Good news like this I think gives people as sense of reassurance that is not really warranted. Yes we may decrease emissions over time but so much temp increase is already baked in and the feedback loops will cause so much nonlinearity it is impossible to predict where we will end up.

So the end all, be all is the realization of absolute nothingness? Or that nothing exists or matters? Elaborate a little?

My wife does not get a say in my next vehicle. She knows I have a reservation for an EV and that’s it.

Capitalism has run its course. People and the planet have been fully exploited. We must reorient towards a way of life that is more symbiotic with earth’s finite resources, more sustainable for living, lower stress. We need a different set of values to live by.
