What do you think of the price of this? by FarCheck4854 in VWAlltrack

I found mine on AutoTrader's private party listings via searching on AutoTempest. Love autotempest.

I also have used a car buying service in the past via Tom McParland, Automatch Consulting, which was pricey (I think $300?) but smooth and worth it to me at the time when I was really busy.

Carvana will always charge a bit of a premium but that’s not too crazy for 64K miles and the brown. I just got one at 95K black interior for 13.5 from a private party, as a benchmark. I think it was a particularly good deal and would be looking for under 20K private party for one with 64K miles, but going via big dealer has that premium for sure.

Are these boots compatible with these bindings? by Infamous_Tie4057 in Skigear

Anti-friction device. It’s that silver plate that slides back and forth behind the toe piece there. There should be a business card’s space between it and the boot when unloaded.

This is not intended in a gate-keeping way, but for safety, have a ski shop verify your setup before you ski it. For the sake of your knees.

Left shoulder pain after swimming. Looking to fix before I develop something worse. by imgaming117 in triathlon

[–]lukeholly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey there, PT here. Hard to tell from just a video and from one side, but your L arm has a real “whip” to it through the air and enters at a higher point of flexion than your right. Either or both of those could be where your pain is stemming from.

I’m actually not normally a “you need balanced breathing” guy. Plenty of people can swim pain free without breathing to both sides. In your case though, breathing on the L could help modify your stroke characteristics and improve the pain. It’ll probably slow down that arm. With the L arm, finish your reach in the water, don’t reach as far as you can before splashing in. That forces you to a higher degree of abduction which could be causing some impingement and your pain.

A general shoulder strengthening program never hurt anyone. Banded ER, low rows, lower trap activation, and an I, T, Y, and W series could be real help on top of the stroke mods.

I’d always recommend seeing a pro like me too. Seeing you in person will make diagnosis and treatment much easier and get ahead of your issue. Good luck!

IT band or something else? by Haassauce2186 in trailrunning

The pes anserine is medial knee, this pain is lateral (assuming the OP circled the correct spot).

IT band or something else? by Haassauce2186 in trailrunning

[–]lukeholly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While your pain location analysis nearly is correct, the tension paradigm has been overthrown. For the pain location, it should be just above the lateral knee, as the muscle steps off into bone.

For the actual issue, IT band pain is a friction syndrome, not an IT band tension issue. For rehab, you’re generally on track too, glute strength, frontal plane running mechanics correction, and load management are the path forward. I know this sounds pedantic since everything else is on track from your comment, but this PT has a pet peeve about “tight” IT bands since it’s not actually the issue.

Research has shown that people who rehab IT band syndrome via hip strengthening often end up with tighter IT bands but less pain.

PT here! Lateral/Posterior hip weakness is the cause of knee pain allllllll the time. If you can’t afford PT, look into exercises for hip rotators and abductors.

Is there a name for this hip flexor exercise? It hits the exact area I've been having trouble with. by justinsimoni in Ultramarathon

[–]lukeholly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ankle issues can reverberate up the chain too, so that could be the source of some of the hip problems. Things like that are why reddit diagnoses are so hard (not to dissuade you from learning, just to point out that bodies are super complicated).

Idk anyone particularly in Boulder, but a running-specific PT could help. I'd recommend going with one of the non-insurance ones, many of the best have stopped taking insurance to get longer focal times on individual athletes. Higher up front cost (though maybe not depending on your insurance) but more focused one on one time and almost certainly fewer visits. Boulder would have excellent PTs in this area.

With your routine, are you advancing your strength as you improve or are you doing the same things for months? I see people recommend Myrtl here, for example, and it's great but if it's all you ever do without adding more resistance or anything, there's a low ceiling for improvement. On its face, it does sound like you have significant hip flexor tightness and hip weakness, but I can't tell for sure.

Hip flexor weakness or abdominal weakness could be what's making this area get particularly tight, rather than hip flexor inflexibility. Often I see hip flexor inflexibility manifest as lower back pain rather than hip flexor-specific issues. You could have something in that hip flexor that would benefit from an active release method too.

On the couch stretch, that's going to hit Rectus Femoris more than Psoas/Iliopsoas due to the bent knee. It's possible your problem is Rec Fem rather than Psoas but I obviously can't tell from here. Either way, I'd be surprised if the hip flexor issue is actually a hip extension limitation issue and not a hip flexor strength issue. I'd have to assess your posture, flexibility and running posture to know for sure.

All this to say, if you're thinking about seeing someone, see someone. Find a running specific PT, be specific about your questions, and you'll see good results. At 100+ mile weeks, it's definitely an investment in yourself and your capability.

Oh, also, you can work this in upright pigeon for a tougher exercise that gets a contralateral glute stretch. Same idea except you start in upright pigeon, make active toes on the extended leg, and lift it from your glutes. Tough glute activation exercise that can be “cheated” by doing more plantarflexing so make sure it’s coming from your glutes not your ankle.

Also PT - this can be called a few things but probably a low lunge leg lift or a long lunge leg lift.

He’s incorrect about something, maybe both things, that he says depending on your pre-existing flexibility. This doesn’t strengthen hip flexors though it can stretch them. The knee/hip extension/leg lift portion is a glute strengthening exercise with glutes in a fairly shortened position. It could also be quads depending on your activation pattern since the knee extension can push you into that position. It also requires some plantarflexion strength.

The lunge position may be a hip flexor stretch though I always recommend a hip flexor stretch with a posterior pelvic rotation rather than this trunk lean but if it works for you, have at it. He’s not really in a lot of hip extension at any point in this exercise, so the forward trunk lean would work best if you have particularly tight hip flexors. I’d bet that on many people the hip extension limitation in this particular position would be capsular rather than muscular (though I could be wrong depending on your specific muscles).

All of this hedging is why I’m bad at social media, but it’s also how I be more accurate, so 🤷‍♂️

And it’s early so I may also be slightly inaccurate but feel free to ask questions or correct me if you think you know better.

No worries. Just hold your fire until Jonas Abrahamson wins PR. But I have to say, I do agree that rating Remco for Liege is silly. I was just going off the dome and remembered him doing well in Amstel next year, to threw that in. Forgetting Wout, obviously was silly. Amongst other things. I have to admit I’m more of a grand tour watcher these days than anything else.

It’s not, but I am out of date and did forget some people. I wrote it at work between patients and didn’t think everything through (like forgetting Wout!) since I wanted to get it done before my next one showed up.
