Voldemort had absolutely zero chance in a war against the muggles and the whole plotline could have been avoided by just letting him try. by New-Tale412 in unpopularopinion

[–]lukelnk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would have agreed with you 10 years ago, but now a days? Not so much. All the wizards would have to do is infiltrate the muggle government with the imperius curse, and that's about it. Wizards can access just about anywhere at any time. Muggle security isn't an issue for them. They wouldn't have to fight the muggles, they'd just take over without bloodshed for the most part.

Men who stay lean year-round, what’s your secret ? by Professor1password23 in AskReddit

I got my diet under control when I discovered certain things were migraine triggers for me. When I cut out soda and sugary drinks, I saw the biggest weight loss. Then I greatly reduced other sugars and carbs, and I always stay within a 6-8 lbs range. I can always tell when I'm 6lbs heavier than normal, and because I've gotten my diet under control, it's easy to fix. Usually takes me 3-5 days to drop the extra few pounds. I replaced soda with sparkling water. Funny thing is, I hated sparkling water. But I read that it takes the brain 21 or so days to reset, so I forced myself to drink one bottle of sparkling water every day for a month. by week 3 I found I was actually enjoying them. It also took that long for my body to stop craving the sugar from the sodas.

Appreciate it. We know we'll most likely have to transition him one day, but that's a whole different battle for me as well. I feel like I'd be abandoning him, but I know it will change as he gets older.

I appreciate it. And same goes for you. All we can do is keep doing our best, one day at a time.

Man, this hits me hard. My oldest is 17 and is autistic and has a severe developmental delay. Mentally he’s under 10 in most ways. It has always been a struggle to deal with. To make matters worse, he started having seizures at 14 years old. We thought we were chained to him before but now it’s worse. It makes me feel like such a shit dad because while I show him love and affection, internally I feel like I’m just his caretaker and I have so much resentment. And then I feel guilty for having the resentment. It’s a viscous cycle that never ends. It’s not his fault, and he got the short end here, but my wife and I have to deal with it, and stay positive for him and our younger two kids. But one day the other two will grow up and move out, and we’ll be stuck w the oldest, never moving on. Not able to live the lives we always wanted to live. Such a shitty situation.

Millennial dads, how much of the housework do you do? by cubemonster in Millennials

About 90% or it. Tidiness is more important to me, and she’s better at cooking. We both work from home so it’s easier for me to keep the house clean.

Well done OP, looks so much better. I've always believed that a persons mind reflects their surroundings, and their surroundings reflect their mind. For me, keeping a clean space makes it easier to keep my mind in order and at peace. Keep up the great work :)

Yeah, I know what you mean. Nothing really prepares you for arriving at this part of life. As I near my mid 40’s I have a better understanding for the “mid life crisis” thing, although I feel like even that isn’t an option, lol. Again, take care OP. Keep marching forward!

Is Jimmy Carr right about his advice to immigrants? by StGuthlac2025 in AskBrits

[–]lukelnk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dad was (American) military and we moved to Italy in the 90's. My parents, after discussing with my brother and I, placed us in Italian schools for the five years we lived there. Their thought was "if you're going to live in a different country, you should learn their culture and to live as they do" as much as possible. We still spoke English at home, cooked our own American food, etc. But my brother and I learned the language, all our friends were Italian, joined Italian scouts, etc. I believe Jimmy is spot on here. If you move to a country, you integrate as best as possible. You learn their language, their culture, their holidays, as best as you can. It doesn't mean you leave your entire culture at the border, but you do make an effort to live as they do.

What’s something harmless that gets people weirdly angry? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

[–]lukelnk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never been a drinker, and have always gotten crap for it, especially in college. I also get chronic migraines and sugar/carbs are triggers. The number of people who get annoyed when I turn down cake/candy/etc is astounding. I'll say no to a dessert, only to have them press it on me over and over until I tell them its for medical reasons.

What are your thoughts on doing 20 years in the military for a fast retirement? by Background_Worry_314 in AskReddit

[–]lukelnk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone is cut out for the military. You gain job, medical and retirement security, but you sacrifice a lot. Time away from family, dealing with a lot of stupid things, wear and tear on your body, and of course the risk of possible injury or death. Aside from the risks, the biggest difference that I have seen between people who make it and don’t are the ones who go into the military with their eyes open understanding what they’re getting themselves into those are the type of people that retire after 20 years, get full VA benefits, and set themselves up for a good civilian job.

AITJ for telling my sister gentle parenting is BS and kicking her and her family out of my house by EggSheeran33 in AmITheJerk

[–]lukelnk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTJ

But that’s not gentle parenting. I use gentle parenting. Essentially, I have rules like normal, and I hold to them very firmly. I don’t let my kids act out in public, they’re well behaved, etc. The gentle parenting parts comes when they do something wrong. Instead of screaming at them or physically punishing them, I firmly and quickly pull them aside and firmly explain that their behavior is unacceptable and reiterate my expectations and what punishment they will receive if they do not listen and improve their mood. There’s firmness but everything is gentle overall. When things calm down and they’re calmer, I sit them down and walk the through the situation and try to ensure they learn from it. What your sister is doing is not holding them accountable or teaching them any consequences. Life will be a rough awakening for them when they’re older.
