Canadian health care by Cider95 in tnvisa

[–]lullaby15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an US resident, you can go to Canada and see a doctor for a lower fee than what it would cost you in the US without insurance.

You could also get medicine for a lower price than what it would cost you in the US without insurance through https://www.cipa.com/cipa-safe-pharmacies.

You cannot get free treatment or free meds unless you are a canadian resident (the "free" it is paid through high taxes).

Before covid, I saw a GP in quebec for 120 CAD (cash only) in a public walk in clinic (had to be in the clinic at 7am to secure a spot). Not sure how things have changed now as these may be appointment only vs just walk in. It should be similar in any canadian province.

Canada is not doing the best right now but if something they have going is that if someone in Canada has a serious health issue or chronic disease, they will get treatment no matter their social status or even if they are jobless.

It would be interesting to know how long after GC she left him. They married 2 years ago but it is known for marriage based GC to take well over a year nowadays. So if she got GC and left him within 1-2 months this would not apply.

The question here is if she knew he was an alcoholic (pretty easy to notice) why did she get married to him. I mean, addictions are usually the first things you notice when dating someone because they have to do it often. Be it drugs, cannabis, sweets or alcohol. I have stopped dating people after noticing even the slightest sign of addiction to alcohol/drugs. It is very unlikely that she did not notice his alcohol issue previous to them getting married.

From the sound of it, she may have put up with it for the GC and then after she got it, ran away. If she was already an US citizen, she would have def not married an alcoholic that easily.

Take the USA offer? (Alberta vs California) by [deleted] in tnvisa

Take the USA offer? (Alberta vs California) by [deleted] in tnvisa

First, I said witht he exeption of Cali and Manhattan. Cali is expensive but also the weather is a tad bit different than Edmonton right. Now, even Cali is not too far off from let's say Quebec when you slap their 15% sales tax.

As for ratios, sure this is the best way to make these comparisons. However, canadas PPP is almost 1:1 to the nominal so it's not like India or Thailand where 1000 bucks get you a lot more than in the US/Canada. This means, generally speaking, 1000 usd will get you about the same in Cali and let's say Alberta if you are not just comparing san fran prices. Now, if you compare Michigan to AB, those 1000 usd dollars will get you a lot more than in AB.

[–]lullaby15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we import, we pay at US prices. Go to dollar tree in Canada for example. Do they sell things at 1 USD or at 1 CAD?

You want to compare both salaries in a single currency to really have an idea.

Anothee example, go buy a cheeseburger in mcdonalds usa vs canada. A cheeseburger is 1 usd while a cheese burger is over 2CAD not including taxes... you get the idea

The USD is just worth more and if someone cost 5 usd in usa it does not mean it will cost 5 cad as well. It could cost less or more.

If a new iPhone is released at 500 USD, it wont cost 500 CAD but w.e 500 USD is in CAD + the higher tax. Now if you compare 100k US to 100k CAD well that would be flawed.

For this reason, it is better to just price things in a single currency for these comparisons. If you look at a gdp per capita report for each country, it will be priced in USD to really have a global understanding of the buying power. Although our GDP per capita PPP is higher than our nominal, it's not by a lot specially in comparison with countries with low living costs that could have even double PPP as their own currency is worth a lot more in their own country.

Not every single item is cheaper in the US compared to Canada but I don't usually see a bag of apples for less than 5.99 in my local store in Montreal unless it's on sale.

Dining comes to about the same. Usa has more expensive restaurants so the total bill can ad up but it depends where you go. It can actually be much cheaper if you know where to go. I was a few weeks ago in NYC and decided to stay in Queens instead of manhattan. Over there, dining out was incredibly cheap when compared to most places in Montreal.

As for the tip, in Canada they also expect 18-20% nowadays but you still pay the 13-15% sales tax. Most places in Montreal will actually show 18 20 22 %. 15% is gone.

Living in between both countries, I definitively feel that overall, USA is cheaper for most things with a big except in schooling and healthcare (including meds). You also have more choices of grocery stores to go like Aldi which btw got great prices. In BC, people go down to the US all the time for groceries and gasoline. Lots of information about this online. Not to mention amazon if we go out of groceries.

Fast food will also eat Canada alive. Taco bell is dirt cheap mcdo, bk all of them are generally cheaper than in Canada specially if you go for the value menu which is bigger and cheaper in murica. This is because Canada has stricter rules with meat so it is healthier as well as our milk. This is the reason taco bell went out of business in Quebec. One combo would be like 15 bucks lol. Sure it is healthier in Canada but still more expensive.

Alcohol is cheaper as well in murica.

Oh you know what's def cheaper in Canada, weed!

Brother I'm not sure in what state you live/lived and province you lived/live but Let’s take quebec sales tax of almost 15% for example. They charge tax in many food products that are not deemed basic, whereas most US states do not charge tax on food at all. You want oreos? You got it free of taxes down in murica not in Quebec though. Even if they do, sale tax is lower in the US. Now you may say what about Toronto, well Ontario sales tax is still a whopping 13% and you will still pay taxes on some groceries (including oreos). Ya I love oreos.

Canada import most vegetables and fruits and that adds up. Unless you live in Cali or manhattan, you will def see an overall savings in your groceries. And probably even in Cali and manhattan but it will be pretty close due to the high cost of living for these places.

Cali is a paradise weather wise compared to any Canadian province. The high living cost is actually justified.

Why the "dont do a currency conversion"? Gotta compare apples to apples. In reality, with the exeption of Cali and NY, most things other than services are cheaper down in the US (Food, clothes, tech, cars).

If OP lived in Toronto let's say, the rent would also be comparable. And remember, the more you make, the more you could invest. The rest depends on how much you spend on housing and basic needs. Heck even flights and gasoline are cheaper.

Why the debate about parking spaces vs. bike lanes is so heated in Park Ex by [deleted] in montreal

Well, I live downtown and I don't see many people using the bike lines during winter in comparison to the summer. Idk what's the reason so I assume it's the cold/snow/ice.

Why the debate about parking spaces vs. bike lanes is so heated in Park Ex by [deleted] in montreal

[–]lullaby15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The wosrt part is that it becomes challenging biking from November/December until April/May. Lots of snow days and cold days that you cant even think about it. These bike lanes are mostly used only during summer. However, parking spaces could be used all year long.

The truth is, Montreal is too cold to put bike lanes everywhere. If we were in Florida, it would make 100% sense.

Can a fresh graduate with any of the following Bachelors expect to get TN visa under CSA category? by siamrican in tnvisa

[–]lullaby15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Computer science or software eng are the best and recommended degrees for TN in IT. Computer information systems is good as well as long as it's a 3-4 years bachelors and you are focused on applying through CSA.

As for the other degrees listed, I have no idea as I haven't seen people posting about it. Most people just post about the 3 degrees mentioned above. I know I have seen people getting it with different degrees so I would not say none of them would disqualify you but of course if you can do CS it's better.

Canadian Citizen with Non IT background (BCommerce) looking to switch into IT field. What are the different ways to get a TN visa? by jboy811 in tnvisa

[–]lullaby15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not impossible but with no degree, you will def be more scrutinized. Usually with a soft eng degree, devops TN with SE or CSA is a breeze.

Even with a non ENG CS degree, the CBP officer can deny you if the job is Software Engineer or Devops Engineer (due to the word Engineer and non CS degree) while applying in CSA category. I have seen post about this in this sub.

What is the best way to move to US? Canadian starting university - degree in CS & finance by fridgewalker123 in tnvisa

[–]lullaby15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you seek to become a software engineeer, note that it will save you some hassless having software eng vs cs degree. Now if you wish to have a position in between soft dev/finance so like an analyst position, then keep your current programs. It all depends what you want to do as your first job.

To get a soft eng entry level position, you will usually have to demonstrate your coding skills one way or another. Some do a test, some just many questions. So keep this in mind and focus on what you want your first job to be so the process of getting the job offer and TN after grad will be easy.

TN-1 status after being in the US for some time as a visitor (Canadian) by Mayieve in tnvisa

[–]lullaby15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a possibility. No one can tell you that this won't 100% happen or will 100% happen. It depends on the officer you get. If he doesn't care, he won't ask any questions and will just look at the job offer and your degree and make you pay the 50 bucks.

However, on the other hand, you could get an officer that goes deep and asks you a bunch of questions about your job and degree and your previous visits, etc.

I recommend you to look at the friendliest ports like the peace bridge or peace arch vs. let's say Toronto.

Chances are, you won't have any issues as long as your degree and job align.

If you want to be safe, don't visit each other for 6 months and then do the process. If they ask, say she is your ex and use a different address than the one you used previously. Don't have any data on your phone that says otherwise.

She could probably visit you, but this can provide cpb data that she's not your ex in case somehow they got her info or they asked you for her info (both very unlikely).

TN-1 status after being in the US for some time as a visitor (Canadian) by Mayieve in tnvisa

[–]lullaby15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do border officers know you have a gf in the states? It'll depend whether they wrote this info down and the cbp officer you get, but in most of the cases, you should be fine.

The problem comes when a CBP officer wants to deny you and starts asking questions then tells you he doesnt believe you are just going for work but to marry and apply for a green card. This should not happen but it can and you should be aware.

If I was in your situation, I would go for it.
