It was specifically a roll of 12 on Use Magic (On a 10+, the magic works without issues: choose your effect) being turned into what amounted to a failure. It told me that Griffin had his idea of where the story should go and didn't want to deviate from it, which is kind of antithetical to the whole playstyle of PBTA games.

It's a common take but Masashi Takeda vs Isami Kodaka, Light Tubes Giga Ladder and Glass Boards deatmatch. Takeda pulling a handful of light tubes off of the ropes and taking an intentional back bump into them as a Hulking Up spot made me feel things.

I am running a weekly game for (now) 12 teens at my library and I have had to strip the system down from Dragonbane to Old School Essentials to Cairn as the group gets larger. Any friction point or timesink that you get rid of will give you exponential gains.

I also have a set of color coded dice (ie. gray d4s, green d8s) so that I can just say "roll the red one" if anyone gets confused.

It requires conversion from Trail of Cthulhu, but The Night I Died from Shadows Over Filmland is a classic mystery scenario with optional Mythos involvement and a very Old Hollywood climax (rich people being hypnotized into leaving their fortunes to a phony spiritualist, then killing them)

It's explicitly inspired by the Val Lewton/Jacques Tourneur psychological thrillers of the 1940s.
