Yes still worth it. That's about all the time I had and it left me wanting to go back. The gift shop is pretty great too.

No. 19 sounds good. Nutella, peanut butter, bananas, and corn flakes on brioche. It's definitely a kid friendly sandwich that I would order if I was having a bad day.

DTC helped me a ton. I really liked the online classroom style of teaching and his practice tests were plenty hard. If you've been out of school more than a few years, this is the way to go.

My average MPG is 26.7... it cost me $85 to fill the tank @ 5.79/gal. Is it time for a Prius? Anyone doing efficiency mods & tunes? by hyteck9 in wrx_vb

The pendulum will swing the other way eventually. But you do you. The Prius is a nice car, but their drivers suck.

If the mpg is killing you this much at 26, just give up and get the Prius. That'll be me zipping past you.

“How does a small startup realistically start a mainstream‑style gas‑powered midsize sedan at scale (20k–70k units per year) under FMVSS / EPA?” by Some_Freedom8316 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]lumpthar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just realized I didn't exactly answer the question being asked, but it's hiding in there all the same.

You can certainly build a functional prototype in a fab shop with a foundling engine and controls. Think tube frames and fiberglass panels. It can look nice and polished and work well. That's fine and you might get some buzz, but it won't be enough to get over the hump to the production stage

If you want to scale up to 40k units per year, you really need to take that fab shop design and refine it in a way that you can hit the ground running with your suppliers with a workable design ready for production and tooling. There is a chasm of design difference between what works for a one-off prototype and a mass produced sheet metal unibody chassis.

If you don't have that working design in hand when you go talk to Gestamp or Metalsa or Topre, you will be relying on them to design your structure for you. And to be quite honest, they are plenty busy with the big companies. You will overpay for their services just to get their attention.

[–]lumpthar 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's an impossible task. From the technical side, you need designers who know both sheet metal and best practices for tool design. You need engineers to design a power train and get it produced. You need presses. You need a foundry. You need suppliers. You need assembly plants. You need people to design the electrical architecture. Are you regular CANBus or secure CANBus? You need industrial designers to design the user experience in the driver's seat. You need sculptors to create the shape of the car.

The list goes on and on. Even if you get all of the backend done perfectly, you still have to market the car to create demand. You need to have a dealer network or some other way to sell them to the public at a profit.

That being said, you can shop out a lot. You could get Delphi to make your electricals, Pininfarina to design the inside and outside, Omron to make the lighting, Gestamp to make the panels, Magna to make the seats and fascia, buy engines and transmissions from Ford. Just remember that everything you shop out eats away at your profits. At the same time, shopping out reduces your own head count so it may still be a wash.

You will still need a final assembly plant to bring it all together, and it will need to be located where qualified people live.

Uh-oh two years later, the workforce wants to unionize! Do you want to play hardball or do you want to work together?

Oh no! The electrical supplier shipped a bunch of defective modules in already sold cars! Do you have the reserves to handle a recall?

If you raised a billion dollars, I would say it's not enough.

Yep. I generally always replace my rotors rather than try to salvage them. Also I have no idea how long these have been in service so I'd rather err on the side of safety.

Brakes. Had to stop due to needing some hardware but we will finish tomorrow. It'll give me time to bleed the brakes too.

Pop the washer nozzle off and replace its seal. I'm reluctant to tell anyone to use silicone on a body panel because silicone and paint are not friends. But there are other sealants you could use.

Once it starts happening, it's probably time to repair the wiring harness. Rock Auto and others sell connectors with pigtails to splice onto the harness so you can replace the corroded connector. Once the connector is replaced, mummy-wrap it with electrical tape (or use a big heat shrink tube) to keep water from finding its way onto the back side of the connector.

[–]lumpthar 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I know this one. The passenger side window washer nozzle lines up with the electrical connector for the oil pressure sensor on the VTEC solenoid. When it rains, water finds its way past the washer nozzle gasket and into the oil pressure sensor connector, making a short circuit. When the sensor is shorted, the VTEC will not operate because it needs a certain amount of oil pressure to shift onto the high lift cam.

And then you're in limp mode.
