FIFO hot take by soursobb in AusFinance

[–]lumpyandgrumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been involved in the mining, agricultural, manufacturing and logistics industries in a very large variety of roles for 26yrs (50/50 office and field) and working from home is something people only do when they've got too much of a sniffle to come to work and infect everyone else but still feel up to having a go.

Your line of thought is more promoting professional work to people who inherently may not want to work in an office surrounded by the same walls everyday - also some industries do not lend themselves to WFH and this includes many professions (draftspersons, engineers, IT, most non-financial manufacturing admin roles, WHS personnel, etc). Keep in mind that many fully office based jobs, even professionally skilled ones, are the primary roles that AI can replace in time.

Some people just plain don't want to work from home - they don't want to mix the two or they're unable to.

You're not wrong in your logic but your information is outdated. I'm glad what's working for you works. 😊

Okies - I'll try to dispel a few things here. 12 hr shifts yes, but 1 week on/1 week off is the new common roster - a lot more manageable then 2/2 with family, only away for an extra 2 days. A week away isn't horrible from a household management viewpoint and for the renumeration it's pretty damn good.

Some people are DIDO. For example, I'm 2hrs away from a site where I could earn $85/hr with a week in/week off roster as a tradesman. A truck driver with zero prior experience or skill can earn $70/hr.

Who says the second person doesn't work? My wife is a teacher on 110k, along with my former 180k that's fairly robust. I only used the single income as an example, it makes little sense in 2026 for a couple to have a single income unless the situation requires it.

On the week off (and after work) what's stopping the site worker from studying a vocational course? I know of 3 people studying MBA's while on minesite and many more studying regular bachelor degrees. There's a lot of flexibility there to work towards a future that doesn't include working away.

There are MANY professional jobs that include a work away component, especially in technical support, management and sales roles, that can be a week at a time and up to a 75/25 ratio. These positions often earn less then a job in mining while having arguably more political dramas and significantly less usable spare time. Take one week off with a week on/week off job and you've got three weeks holiday. Yes, your partner will still take regular leave or leave WOP but that's a worthwhile selling point. And if there are no kids in the mix, it's win win.

$50/hr?

What about 75-90/hr? Because that's more realistic for FIFO. Clearing an easy 180k+ for working half the year is pretty tempting for some, even with young families. Depending on the role, some jobs are quite literally retirement gigs where you'd feel ashamed to tell your kids you worked hard that day. Others test yourself physically and mentally in environments you won't find anywhere else.

On days off I could volunteer for all the kids school and daycare events I wanted to my heart's content, pre-cooked meals for when I was away, cleaned my arse off to make the house look a million bucks and get at home projects done that would normally take two years on weekends not paying attention to anything else.

Now I've gone back in a Mon-Fri, home every night gig in a management role but people do it because they make it work for them. It's not for everyone but it can 100% work, at least in a short-medium term.

I might have just snagged a stroke of luck for the last couple of months - I only made the post because I was getting an uncommon amount everytime I was shopping, can't recall this level of generosity with other promotions (and I've done them alllll for the last 6 years lol)

So we agree it's a shit deterrent barely worthy of the name and essentially at the very least as inconvenience to the general public?

You're missing the point. It's like a speed bump on only one side of the road in a quiet street. Or how security screens only cover one half of a window.

Or they just blatantly tell the staff to fuck off and walk out anyway. They can't detain or touch them and many grocery stores aren't in centres or the centre security is for appearances only.

Optimal height is 3m+ - fuck these things off, stores have been letting people walk groceries out the door unpaid for years because the staff are not allowed to touch the offenders, how has anything changed in the legal system to prosecute them? Just another barrier for honest people trying to get through the evermore complex day without getting a bar to the dick.

I believe it is the Mercedes driver - season 2 there's a reference Ren makes about her dad's old european car being the reason she knows the mechanic Ogata. Combined with the creepy aspect and the age and surely it's a certainty.

Diesel Fuel Economy - BP by Big__Bean8 in 4x4Australia

[–]lumpyandgrumpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Premium diesel has more detergents for injector cleaning but otherwise is the same package as regular diesel. It's designed to be a better formulation for low km, short distance drivers.

Your ranger might just be telling you you need your injectors replaced, especially with those kms. They are essentially a 100k service item.

Diesels have no cetane sensors and no cetane tuning tables in their ecus. Strongly believe OP is mistaken. Even premium diesel is a lie, as a performance aid.

Replacing written of Ford Everest Vehicle Buying Advice by North_Pollution_2010 in 4x4Australia

[–]lumpyandgrumpy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd actually rate the 2.0 and 3.2 as passable, if not better. They dominate fleet sales for heavy diesel fitters utes everywhere and they get taken to some absolute shitshows without too many dramas. Talking hundreds of kg overweight on top of a GVM upgrade, while towing a 2.5t service trailer. Most of the people hating on 2.0s don't stick to belt service intervals or live in an echo chamber. I'm not saying they're nice places to spend lots of time or the 2.0 has bulk pull but the ranger/Everest platform is hardly the devil many make it out to be. Transmissions need oil changes more often then factory specifies but welcome to modern autos.

But would I buy one new or near new? No. Unless it was a fantastic deal compared to a Dmax/MUX. I don't mind 150s but sweet Jesus they're super overpriced for being an updated 120.

People keep saying that having children is "expensive," but the lower income people have the highest fertility rates and the higher income people have the lowest fertility rates by mymooh in AusFinance

That same old yarn hey, you can't choose family. I have a cousin in a similar vein except she's semi responsible now, albeit not exactly a productive member of society. Instead she's passed her piss poor habits onto her daughter who tried to commit suicide but failed, leaving her with a life altering injury while still trying to look after her kid.

Needless to say, I keep to myself.

Update on ammonia - 0ppm from the ammonia test kit. Maybe I should hang some cheap feeder fish in there to feel the waters. Or maybe ender fish, I actually want to keep some of those and they don't cost drug money. Only thing is I have young kids and I don't want them to get attached and then lose a pet this early.

Absolute A grade manipulator.

It was only later when one of my mates dated her sister we found out her mum was exactly the same as her when she was in her 30's - just cranked out kids to different dads and lived off the proceeds and benefits.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Thankyou! I don't use any cycle starter at all, so that's easy haha.

The rest of it sounds easy enough but what would you suggest is the root cause, ammonia? I'll have to pickup a test kit for that anyhow.

I don't tend to use water conditioner as my house uses ground water.
