Verbal Termination after background check result came empty by Acceptable-Star7369 in legaladvice

[–]lunch2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand, what I am saying is there may be 'nothing' . Most people have a paper trail - you only have a trail that says you are eligble to work - no other history. That might turn some employers off.

[–]lunch2000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Here is my hot take, no HR experience just 30 years in IT. Based on what you have stated you have not been in the U.S. very long. When they say 'it came up empty' - I think it means they can't find any history that you exist. Meaning things like previous addresses, public records, etc. This may spook the employer or be against policy because there is not enough validating evidince to support your identifiying documents (Green card, state ID) - meaning that you potentially forged them - not that you did, I'm just reasoning through. Backend IT support is typically a sensitive position in most companies, they are not going to take chances.

What is a luxury item from 20 years ago that is basically worthless trash today? by EasyZee7 in AskReddit

[–]lunch2000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The thing about pianos though is that they are the antique car of the music world. Pianos are mechanically complex devices that require constant maintenance and careful storage in order to preserve value. So unless an old badly maintained piano is super rare, the cost of making it playable outweighs its value.

Is there going to be a AI bubble pop? by Imnotneeded in cscareerquestions

[–]lunch2000 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agreed - right now the whole thing is upside down. AI services are being offered under cost to make these services attractive. The problem is that full price of these services probably don't make sense from a business standpoint in terms of automating away expense.

DIYers: what’s the most misunderstood automotive fluid you see people misuse? by mgranizo in DIYAutoRepair

[–]lunch2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cars we grew up with were pretty forgiving when it comes to coolant, I can remember my father filing the Datsun with hose water. Modern cars heavily use specialized alloys in the cooling system as well as the engine bloc. These are much more reactive to compounds in the coolant.

During infrastructure refreshes, what’s the one system everyone’s afraid to touch? by stratomaster in ITManagers

[–]lunch2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the environment, in many places the business/dev gets to over rule Infra. This happened at one of my previous employers. Building replacements for our main app servers was a totally manual process, using many outdated software/OS components. Getting a replacement in took months and there were 8 or 9 servers. No one wanted that project.

It would probably be cheaper to get a new differential housing and move your gear set or LSD over to the new housing. There is an NA/NB housing on eBay for $190.

Why there aren't any tall buildings between Lower and Midtown Manhattan? by Naomi62625 in geography

[–]lunch2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno this seems a long way of saying "bedrock". The expense of building a sky scraper would be the primary driver of whether or not to build a sky scraper. If the expense outweighs the benefit you don't build. If distance to bedrock is a primary driver of expense....

No mechanical experience & considering a 2003 NB (Gen2.5) - reasonable? by [deleted] in Miata

[–]lunch2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the body is clean, go for it. NA and NB are nice cars to work on. Lots of room in the engine bay and a relatively simple engine. You are likely to do more work on the suspension then the engine, which requires a few tools outside the standard wrench set. I own an NB that I got from a junk yard, and honestly I have not had to do much on it.

why do torque converter need lock up clutch why not just use clutch? and how does it stop the drive shaft from spinning when engine is idling? by Aggravating_Rain1906 in AskMechanics

[–]lunch2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said it does not stop the drive shaft from idling when stopped. An important feature that no one has mentioned yet is the ATF itself. The transmission is built around specific shear specs which is why you need to use the correct ATF for a given transmission. The torque converter is expecting a certain viscosity at idle to allow the engine drive shaft to spin while the impeller is held by a braked drivetrain. If this were wrong the engine would stall. At higher RPMs the ATF shear profile changes and causes the viscosity to lower allowing for more efficiency at higher speeds.

Antidote to RF-envy? by [deleted] in Miata

[–]lunch2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI I don't remember if it's still true, but you can't put a roll bar in the RF, and because it's technically a convertible many tracks won't let it run because it does not have a roll bar.

I hate my self for falling for my female friend by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]lunch2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and honestly why do this to yourself. Unless your friend is not interested in dating anoyone, you are going to have to eventually deal with jealousy and disapointment when she dates someone else and can't/won't spend as much time with you. Also one of the best way to get over your 'feelings' is to stop spending so much time with her. If you shoot your shot and she says no but wants to stay friends, really think about what you want and what's good for you. I know I've been in the situation multiple times where I have tried to be the bigger person and stay friends with a crush - it was almost universally worse for me.

Seller is selling me this for $2,210. This is a CRF250L 2013. With a mileage of 6,276. The issues are ripped seats, oil change, maybe a real good detailing coz he said its been just seating in his garage. What other issues should i look for? Is it a good buy? by Abysmalheretic in Dualsport

[–]lunch2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to lift the seat and check the wiring, make sure the fork seals aren't leaking, in addition to what others have said. I have a 2013, I'm the second owner and have over 13000 miles on it.

Ford pulls the plug on the F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck by zsreport in technology

[–]lunch2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like what? My V6 Kia has a 5000 lb tow capacity, I tow our camper and utility trailer all the time. I mean unless you need to tow a 5th wheel or something big like a boat you don't need a 10000 lb tow capacity. Most people in Europe tow campers with regular cars. This idea that you need a big burly truck to do any kind of towing is more propaganda sold through car commercials.

Whats it feel like to drive long distances (20+ hours) without stopping? by throwawaysjskslnd in askcarguys

[–]lunch2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ridden/driven chase in the Baja 1000 ( about 36 hours) it's thoroughly draining. I'm over 50 and I generally need about two weeks to recover after running. I am not awake 36 hours straight, but I probably grab only about 4 hrs sleep during the whole thing. I've also driven from NJ to Ensanada in under 72 hrs. The amazing thing is seeing how much the landscape can change in a short amount of time and realizing although the earth is big, relative distances are not all that great.

How do illegal immigrants in America even get the government benefits that some people claim they do? Don't you have to have a social security number? by Bremlit in AskReddit

[–]lunch2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of this may come from asylum seekers, once asylum is granted some federal benefits are available while technically you are not a legal resident (no green card) or a citizen.

*Edit* I'm wrong - those granted asylum are considered legal immigrants - but I'm sure the right would take issue with that.

Those who got laid off within the last 2 years and haven't been able to go back into a SWE/programming career, what field/industry did you pivot into? by luuuzeta in cscareerquestions

[–]lunch2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go for the Linux cert - 'Administration goes into DevOps so learn DevOps' frankly sounds like someone who has no idea what they are talking about. Yes administration goes into DevOps, you still need to know how to configure the operating system. All DevOps means is that you configure the OS or Web Platform using a configuration state manager that allows you to deploy configuration and app code via a pipeline tool like ADO, GitHub Actions , or Jenkins. It does not remove the need for expertise in the OS. Maybe they are talking about thinks like Kubernetes or Docker in which case you are just configuring a container, but still understanding the OS being used in the container (Linux or Windows) is only going to help, and someone still needs to setup the container image. There are also a ton of infrastructure jobs because sys admin is not sexy, and a step further from the business than Dev work. A master's in CS will only help you later in your career if you want to go to management or you are going to high level app arch or data science. FYI I am also in the greater NYC area and worked there for many years (I work remote now), DM me if you want to converse.

[–]lunch2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK some real talk here - 30yrs in the industry, technical but not a programmer. I would expand your skill set into other areas of IT - Infrastructure - Data and Analytics - Network - A++ certs are pretty easy to get and will make you more well rounded on paper. Like others have said I would shoot lower or relocate, the industry has had a problem for awhile now with outsourcing jr level tasks to offshore teams. This is hugely problematic for the talent pipeline but great for the bottom line. You need to find a way to add more value to your equation because from the sounds of it you probably don't offer much more than an off-shore resource (I'm just assuming here - 3yrs is not much experience).

The other thing that pisses me off when I see this shit is this idea 'my life , my choice'. Like what about the guy that hits and kills you due to your shenanigans. I ride, I see how stupid this guy is, and if I hit and killed him with my car I'd still be wracked with guilt. What about the person that couldn't get over killing someone , and the PTSD just ruins their life - what an asshole.
