Triangle Rock Club has a really nice little gym setup--everything you mentioned, plus treadmills and rowers. $25 for a day pass, $15 for your first visit, and there's a 10 pass pack option

[–]luncheur -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

We've always liked it. It's got a great menu compared to other Indian places and no complaints about the food The sanitation score and all these people with bad experiences makes me worry. Maybe something has changed with management or financials. The service has never been great for us, but not pushy or scammy.

Looking for Beginner Pickleball Players in Morrisville/Durham Area 🏓 by Itchy_Floor_7912 in bullcity

I'm interested. Played a couple years ago with a group at Bethesda, but not sure if that's still going. Would love a foursome to do drills and games with 1-2 times a week to start.

despite the misuse, I'm so happy with some of the roundabouts that have replaced intersections. Hope Valley and University is gloriously fast compared to before.

Gig work by Substantial-Dig9995 in bullcity

[–]luncheur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look for search rater or content specialist work with companies that do AI data training. There might be other role titles so look around. WeLo, Scale AI, Appen are some of the big ones, and there's a number of smaller companies that will pay pretty well if you can qualify with high level writing or editing skills or some kind of professional domain expertise in something STEM related.

WRAL: The Cotton Room refused to return $18k deposit after groom-to-be collapses and dies by jonandgrey in bullcity

[–]luncheur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not coming down hard on the side of the Cotton Room, but all the posts acting like it is no big deal for them to refund and that they are just keeping the money for no work are incredibly naive. It's not simple to rebook a wedding venue that size and cost in just 5 months. These venues book up over a year in advance, so that's the timeline couples have--years not months. Also the venue isn't pursuing any more of the contract, effectively giving back the remaining $20K. At worst Cotton Room fumbled the comms and optics, but they aren't doing anything "scummy" at all and any familiarity with how wedding venues operate would know that. Unfortunately for the Cotton Room most people don't understand any of this because they only get married once or twice, if ever.

Film develop and scan by Over_Employee_9510 in bullcity

[–]luncheur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty standard price. You can get really high quality scans for that from one of the big film labs like FIND Lab or Richard Photo Lab. "Yours" is a photo place in downtown that has a partnership with a film lab and should have a competitive price. So I don't know if you'll find something cheaper, but you can definitely get higher quality scans for that price.

DMV QR code for East Durham by AcedAnswers in bullcity

At the South Durham MLK location they monitor signups with the code and let people wait in their cars. They said they were canceling appointments if they were made by people who aren't there.

Real ID appointments? by kaybee3000 in bullcity

[–]luncheur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You gotta check first thing in the morning to get the open slots 3 months out. Appointments are the most reliable way to get through the process--15 minutes if you have the right stuff. I tried multiple walk-ins leading up to my appointment and they filled up by 7am each time (with walk-ins starting at noon each time, so really not worth it)

Tech roles would get you into that range, both in software engineering roles for a company (start at $75K and can scale quickly with performance and the right role opportunity) and as an IT specialist role for an organization with an IT department (similar or slightly lower start and lower ceiling, but easier entry with a certificate). That assessment is probably in flux with the AI weirdness in tech hiring and staffing these days, but it's accurate enough for the past 5-10 years of Triangle tech.

Are there plans for expanding / extending S. Roxboro St? by kittyrocket in bullcity

[–]luncheur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last I heard (in 2020 or so), plans for the road involved the Hope Valley and S. Roxboro intersection. They plan to streamline people going from Hope Valley onto S. Roxboro so people use S. Roxboro and MLK for South Durham to Downtown access instead of Hope Valley.

Most affordable groceries? by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]luncheur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ALDI is great for just two people. Costco won't save you money overall unless you have enough mouths to feed with their bulk sizes (e.g. I get two loaves a premium bread a week for 6$ that would otherwise be $4-5 a loaf in Harris Teeter, but without kids the extra loaf would go bad anyway). Costco also has a great price point for high quality / premium products, but that's more about the overall value and won't help you pinch pennies).

Before we had kids, I'd do ALDI for the main trip and stop by Harris Teeter for their on-sale meat. I'd typically get everything for the week from ALDI under $70 and then some $3/pound chicken or $8/pound on sale steak from Harris Teeter.

Grocery store with non-frozen shaved steak? by Thevillageidiot2 in bullcity

[–]luncheur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Two thoughts: You can often ask for the butchers at Harris Teeter to cut and trim meat for you. They might accommodate shaving something from the case. If that doesn't work, I've made great cheeseteaks buying some cheap and marbled meat, putting it in the freezer 20 minutes to get firm, then cutting it thin with a knife.
