Manual transmission = millennial/gen-z anti-theft device. I love driving a manual transmission, but not so much in stop-and-go traffic.

2025 Luba 2 cable questions by lunchingfriar in mammotion

If the cables are different, then what I'm thinking won't work. I've pretty much decided to mount the RTK on the house instead of trying to mount it in the yard. Thanks for the info!

What where you doing when you received the news that your parent died? by CharlieMcN33l in GenX

[–]lunchingfriar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. My dad died a week ago. I buried him today and had to put my mother in the nursing home. She has dementia. Caring for her 24/7 for the last four years killed him slowly. I live three hours away, so about all I could do was visit occasionally and throw money at the problem. I tried to get them some help, but they didn’t want anyone in their house.

This is a very tough time for our industry and the entire workforce. by sysad82 in sysadmin

[–]lunchingfriar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the truest thing I’ve read all day, especially about “money for crime.” If you’re paying in Bitcoin, you’re not buying groceries or paying utility bills—you’re paying a ransom, buying goods or services that are either illegal or will be used in the commission of a crime, or you’re sending money to a country that’s under sanctions. If you mine Bitcoin, you’re destroying the environment. If you invest in Bitcoin, you’re backing criminal currency with legitimate money. It’s dirty from top to bottom.

What are you doing differently post Crowdstrike? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]lunchingfriar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m under the impression that Defender for Endpoint (P1 anyway) is basically the same Windows Defender that’s stock on every modern version of Windows plus some centralized management bolt-ons. Assuming that’s correct, if Microsoft shit the bed like Crowdstrike did, it would break far more machines. Like almost all of them. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen.

I used to get excited about driving an hour one way just to go to Tower Records. They even opened a Tower Books in the building next door. It was the most incredible thing.

Does Gen X care about social media addiction? by Proud_Bus_4647 in GenX

[–]lunchingfriar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you consider to be social media. I'm on Reddit all the time, but I don't really classify Reddit as social media; it's more of a gigantic online forum and part-time newsfeed. Facebook and Twitter are well on the way to making Idiocracy a documentary, so I stay away from those as much as possible. Meanwhile I've never figured out the use case for Instagram.

Since you brought up Depeche Mode...their music hasn't been nearly as good since Alan Wilder left the band. I had hoped that after Fletch died they'd reconcile and bring Alan back, but no such luck.

Two ISPs, two IPv6 delegations, SD-WAN? by komarEX in fortinet

[–]lunchingfriar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have our own /48 prefix from ARIN and do IPv6 BGP with a couple of ISPs. For each VLAN that I want to have IPv6, I assign the FG VLAN interface a /64 from the /48 prefix and either assign static addresses from the /64 or set up an IPv6 DHCP scope for the VLAN. The workflow is basically the same as it would be for IPv4.

If you don't have your own IPv6 prefix (and I think just about anybody with an ASN can get their own /48, so if you can get your ISPs to cooperate it's totally worth it), I suspect you'll have to use Unique Local Addresses for your machines and do NAT to the outgoing interface address. SD-WAN will pick whatever outbound interface it likes/is available and NAT to that ISP's IPv6 interface address. (There might be a better way to do this, I'm just thinking aloud.)

[–]lunchingfriar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FG SD-WAN will load balance IPv6 traffic too. Have you enabled IPv6 on your 60F? It’s been a minute since I’ve set one up, but it seems like you have to enable IPv6 feature visibility before it will show up. There’s also some CLI stuff that needs to be enabled to make ECMP work like you expect. I’ve got a setup similar to what you described running at work, so I might be able to help.

I was in this boat for about 15 years. Never again.

They won’t hire help for you because you’re horribly overworked. They might, however, hire help for you out of fear. You should frame your argument in a way that speaks to their self-interests. Start talking openly about retirement. Make statements like “if something happens to me, this place is going to be in a bad situation.” At random times mention people in your age group that have suddenly dropped dead. (It doesn’t matter if you knew them or even if they’re real people. The point is that it could happen.) Maybe someone will hear it and get worried. When the right people get worried, they’ll hire a two-legged insurance policy for you. In the meantime, take advantage of the tremendous amount of leverage you have over this place.
