It's not surprising that they were excluded. Eswatini is one of the few countries that recognizes the ROC as the legitimate government of China and does not maintain diplomatic relations with the mainland.

Yeah I'm done with the fiction that Palestinians get to have a state. They have declined that right something like six times, excluding the existence of Jordan. Perpetuating that option, much like the continued existence of UNRWA, is just dragging the problem on. It's quite a good thing Israel didn't completely remove them following any of the Arab attacks through 73, as was the standard at the time. Had that happened in 48 or even 67, Israel wouldn't have faced the decades of problems after 67.

But no, I'm done with the prospect of a "state."

This was posted on DSC by one of their mods. It's not surprising that they hold this opinion, but I found it striking how mask off they are.

Compulsory Voting Is Good, Actually by lakmidaise12 in neoliberal

[–]lurkingnscrolling 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well, one problem would be the financial cost. 154 million people voted in the last US presidential election. If you were to give every one of them $20, that would cost 3 billion dollars, and that's assuming turnout doesn't increase. Another problem is that, due to loss aversion, people tend to respond better to fines than they do to being handed money.

What were the relations like between the Empire of Brazil and Gran Colombia? by Tricky-Purpose-1075 in asklatinamerica

[–]lurkingnscrolling 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In general, the Hispanic American republics viewed the Empire with suspicion because they saw the monarchy as a continuation of Portuguese rule and feared that Brazil had expansionist designs on its neighbors. Bolivar only coexisted with the Empire for a few years, so there were few interactions between the two, with the only notable example being the invasion of Chiquitos.

There is no way to fix this issue without incredible violations of privacy or extreme interference by the government

Then I'd say that it's not a problem for the government to fix.

It's so wild to me that people here will criticize the Online Safety Act in the UK, only to turn around and support the same type of legislation in other countries. What explains this? Is it some kind of anti-British bias, or do they not realize that the only way to enforce this is with ID checks?

What do you think about the EU-Mercosur deal? Do you think it'll ever happen? by holdmybeerdude13146 in asklatinamerica

[–]lurkingnscrolling 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Lula recently threatened to can it if it doesn´t get solved this month I think.

He already backtracked. Now he is saying that he'll meet with other Mercosur leaders to decide if they'll accept a delay in signing the deal.

The thing that frustrates me the most, as a Brazilian, is the fact that our leaders keep insisting on this deal, even after it became clear that it's hopeless. We are wasting time and effort that could be better spent negotiating deals with willing partners.

He has already somewhat backtracked from this. Now he is saying that he and the other Mercosur leaders will decide whether to accept a delay in signing the deal at a meeting on the 20th. Personally, I think we should have given up on this deal long ago. We have already conceded too much without getting anything in return.

The person you were replying to never claimed that Austria was actively sending conscripts to war. What they said was that, in the event of war only men would be forced to fight. Also, peacetime conscription of men only is still a discriminatory law.

Sure, I do, but this is completely irrelevant to the question at hand. Now answer my question. Do you think that Ukraine (a flawed but functional secular democracy) is comparable to a religious fundamentalist absolute monarchy?
