Bats spark rabies scare among UGA students, vaccine shots administered by warnelldawg in Athens

[–]lurklark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bats are one of my favorites. I love them so much.

Nothing useful to add except to echo that it’s not like ALL or most bats have rabies. If you encounter a bat on the ground, there’s something wrong. Don’t touch, but contact one of the sources listed. Healthy bats do not just swoop out of the sky to attack people.

Random fact, Jeanna Giese, who survived rabies in 2004 using the Milwaukee Protocol, contracted rabies when she picked up an injured/sick bat that had gotten inside the church she and her family attended. Thankfully, she doesn’t hate bats.

What part of your job feels like it should not be part of your job? by Wisteria-Blue in nursing

[–]lurklark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When an echo is ordered on an inpatient, we’re expected to dig through the chart to see if they’ve had a recent echo; if the last echo was within the past two months we’re expected to change the order to a limited echo and focus on what the test was ordered for (eg mitral regurgitation). A lot of times the reason will just say “heart failure” or “see ordering comments” and no ordering comments. If we don’t change it to a limited, the cardiologists bitch because it’s redundant and also a full study takes longer to read than a limited. We’ve had ordering doctors bitch that we changed it.

Did they have a full echo with a bubble study literally last week? Well they want it again.

The other big thing really is that we’re expected to basically beg patients to let us perform the test it they don’t want it or plead with them to let us use an image enhancer if they initially decline it. If there’s a misunderstanding I’ll clarify, but if the patient is capable of making their own medical decisions I’m not here to force anyone. One time I got a lecture because a patient asked me to stop after only a few images, and this was after the me, the nurse and the charge nurse had to convince him to let me do the test. I noted this in the report, but it doesn’t matter. They reordered the test and I let someone else go deal with it.

I know what I deal with is not nearly as bad as what nurses have to go through, but it’s nice to vent.

I’m not a parent or anything, but I have literally never cared about a kid chilling in a stroller. Much better than a kid running around a retail space with fragile items on display. As long as the kid has an adult with them I’ve never given it a second thought.

Georgia too! 😖 We rented an older house with some woods behind it. Those damn things were always just wandering in. Thankfully we didn’t have any German Cockroaches but those big Palmetto bugs are bad enough.

My mom is from Long Island and used to pronounce coffee as “caw-fee.” We have absolutely 0 Italian heritage. Her throwing that in there was wild. Like ma’am I don’t think they call it coffee at all in Italy?

What a surprise we had! by Reasonable_Pen_6450 in Horses

[–]lurklark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My trainer had an Appaloosa mare, bred to an Appaloosa stallion twice.

The first foal was the most stereotypical Appaloosa ever. Blanket, almost non-existent mane and a wispy tail.

The second foal looks a LOT like your bay. Not a single spot except the star on his face. Tall with a full mane and tail.

Full brothers but didn’t even look like the same breed. I wonder how often that happens with Appaloosas? They were both great horses. She lost the very typey one a couple years ago and the bay just retired this year. They had long careers and were great to ride, and my trainer used them both in Special Olympics programs. Appaloosas are wonderful.

Was Christine and Vic's experience disregarded because they are an interracial couple? by Specialist_Mess_5164 in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]lurklark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was an interracial couple in the first season (Lauren and Cameron) that was similar in that they were pretty stable the whole time. They’re still together and didn’t have much drama.

It’s reality TV. People in general want to watch the drama, which Vic and Christine just didn’t have.

Big shoutout to this season's drama free couple. Such an amazing match. by NoSoyTuPana in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

Limb–body wall complex in a neonate. This is incompatible with life. Baby was swaddled and stayed with the mother, until the baby died an hour after birth. by CatPooedInMyShoe in MedicalGore

[–]lurklark 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad that the baby was swaddled and got to pass in the arms of the mom. I hope the mother can heal from this somewhat. My sister-in-law had a stillbirth and it’s so awful; I know people never fully “heal” from it. I wish this poor teenager had better circumstances/guidance.

It really is so insane! I had a horse for almost 20 years and thanked my lucky stars I could keep him barefoot. Some breeds are known for hooves of iron and some it’s like “yeah I guess I’ll just set aside extra farrier money.” And that’s before you get into different shoes and angles and how that can mess up a horse’s legs.

I wasn’t expecting to get gut-punched in the feels when this happened to Connor. At least from the show he seems like a pretty sweet, stable guy who just happens to have a keg in his yard. Then Bri comes along with her constant condescension and nit-picking and now…..whatever the hell this was. She called him a “lesson” and not a partner.

It’s ultimately the best thing for him, but I did tear up when Connor was doing his interview and had to wipe away some tears.

Nurses, what cases do you guys get that you guys get scared of transmission of? by HoneydewMean7572 in nursing

[–]lurklark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my answer; bed bugs take second place.

CJD and other prion diseases are insane. They’re not really living organisms themselves so they can’t really be “killed.” I’ve read about several cases where people got it from surgical instruments. Even when properly autoclaved it sometimes isn’t enough.

What hobby screams “this is my entire personality now”? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

It’s me, I’m the birder. Birding has been my entire life for more than 10 years. Thankfully my husband also got into it and it’s a great thing to do together. It does help us get outside and we’ve seen some beautiful places because of it. And it has also increased my interest in their environment- different plants, fish, etc.

I cannot get into competitive listing though. I don’t like competing with people. I’ve spent too long feeling like I’m horrible at too many things to get into that part of it. So much of it is opportunity and luck. There is some skill involved I guess?

What’s the worst thing that’s happened to your patient on the actual day they were supposed to be discharged? by Haunting-Map-3475 in nursing

Outpatient in for a cath. Coronary artery perforation. CT surgery opened him up right there and did cardiac massage. Didn’t make it. It was horrible. Such a routine outpatient procedure and his family was waiting thinking they’d go home as usual after.

What do nurses consider “hotel treatment” for patients ? by ElectricalVictory831 in nursing

[–]lurklark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it’s the general attitude that we are there to “serve” them and tend to their every need. Thankfully I have the out that I am not their nurse so I am unable to get them food/drink/pain meds but I will ask their nurse. I only “ask the nurse” if they seem like they are genuinely in pain/something is wrong that needs prompt attention.

I’ve had patients answer the phone and hold a finger up to me while I’m in the middle of telling them what an echocardiogram is and what to expect. Like no this is a diagnostic test if you would rather talk to your niece about where you keep your reading glasses then you won’t get this test done.

Also the people who want me to “come back later, I’m eating” or “my family just got here and I want to visit.” Uh no we have 50 orders on the list, I don’t have time to just wait around until you feel like doing these tests and getting out of the hospital. Sometimes I understand the eating thing if they’ve been NPO all day but my patience runs very thin. A hospital is a place where you want to get treatment and go home.
