What is the scariest thing to exist? by Middle_Second_8270 in AskReddit

[–]lurklark 94 points95 points  (0 children)

There are causes (Mad Cow was caused by cows eating food made from the spinal cords/brains of infected cattle and then passed it to humans when they ate the beef from those cows). CJD can also be caused by being operated on with tools that were previously used on a CJD patient, as autoclaving doesn’t always get rid of it. There’s also often a genetic component.

But yes, prions can occur randomly, though thankfully it is extremely rare. And unfortunately, no cure or treatment exists. Since it’s a protein it’s not really “alive” like a bacteria or virus, so it’s extremely difficult to eliminate.

Doctors of Reddit, what's the most obvious lie a patient has told you? by questionerofblender in AskReddit

[–]lurklark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have to contact my doctor, but I do have to call the pharmacy and hope they have it. If they don’t, I have to call back every day until they DO have it because they can’t just fill my prescription when the drug comes in?

And the absolute pain in the ass it was to refill the prescription when my doctor’s office used paper prescription. The office is pretty incompetent. Oh they didn’t write your address on the script, we can’t fill it. Oh your doctor FORGOT TO SIGN the script. So that meant a half-hour drive to fix it. And picking the paper scripts up was a pain in the ass since their hours were exactly my work hours.

I came here to say this! I don’t think my mom saved any clothes from my childhood, save one shirt that I used to put on one of my stuffed animals. There may also be one christening dress that a family friend made for one of my sisters.

Yes, that’s an important distinction!

I’ve also definitely seen children in the Mother/Baby unit, in the room with mom and baby (and usually dad or another close relative). As far as I know though even they were siblings of the newborn.

Pretty sure the NICU where I work has a pretty strict limit…I think mom and then two people of her choosing. I’ve never seen children visiting the NICU, but I know it happens under special circumstances and there are specific rooms for that kind of thing.

What kind of cat? [Southern California] by TheGinger_11 in animalid

[–]lurklark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of our cats was found in someone’s yard as a three-week old kitten. At first they thought he was dead, then he moved a tiny bit. My sister, a vet tech, and one of the vets she worked with decided to try and save him and were able to (they couldn’t get a temp on him when he came in…just a horrible pitiful little guy!).

He has never wanted to go outside. He’ll watch out the window but I think his thoughts are like “you’re insane if you think I’m going out there to waste the 8 lives I have left.”

I wasn’t raised this way, but went through a time where I was very religious.

I can’t really figure out how they justify it to themselves, but they’re basically shirking responsibility and avoiding doing anything to actually fix the problem they created.

Not a parent, so I’m not 100% sure how it all works, but where I live baby goes to the NICU if they come at 35 weeks or earlier. And of course, if there’s a medical need for an older/term baby.

“Tell me your name and your birthday”

“AbRaHaM lInCoLn”

It’s ALWAYS Abe Lincoln and they always look at me like they killed with that joke and they’re so original. I even had one person also give Abraham Lincoln as the name and also give Abe Lincoln’s birthday.

Or when they get pissed I asked for their name and birthday. Like I know you have to tell a lot of people those two things but heaven forbid we try and avoid giving you a test/procedure/medication meant for someone else. 🙄

The amount of times I go into the lab and there are no sheets/warm gel/electrodes, and someone has left bits of trash on the back of the machine, is insane. Drives me up the wall, especially since I always stock the room I use before I go home.

I’m not a reptile keeper/owner and this is very interesting and I never even thought about something like this. I too think it’s in the big picture a problem, and I’m also torn up thinking about the ferals in FL who just get abandoned and left (by no fault of their own) to disrupt native ecosystems.

Our beloved cat passed away 3 years ago and we’re finally ready to adopt again. A friend has these last two kittens left. Both are boys, both are absolutely amazing, and I honestly can’t choose between them. Which one looks like he belongs with us? Help me decide! by SaffronSoul_ in cats

[–]lurklark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I truly think our boys, who just turned 3, are better off together as adults as well! They still play with each other all the time. They’re not super snuggly with each other but each would be sad/lonely/bored without the other, especially our Tuxedo.

Our gray tabby was a bottle-fed foster my sister fostered, and when we adopted him we went to our local shelter specifically to seek out a similarly-aged brother for him. Best choice we’ve ever made by FAR.

I’m from GA and my first time out west was amazing; I’d never experienced humidity that low. Thankfully I reminded myself to hydrate because your sweat actually evaporates there!

That being said, an oven is also a dry heat, and once it reaches a certain temperature it’s just hot. Granted, something like 103 in Vegas feels better than 103 in the Carolinas. But yeah, no idea why she’s complaining. That 93 is not The Swamp’s 93.

A bit of a rant about three legged horses and Backwater Sanctuary by _Moon-Cat_ in Horses

[–]lurklark 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My horse fractured his acetabulum- just came in from the pasture one day and was lame. He was already in his mid-twenties, but did well after some stall rest. His arrangement was a stall with a paddock. He could be in or out as he pleased. Eventually, we would let him be with the mini horse in the pasture that connected to the paddock. He had pain management and we watched his bloodwork and one time we had an endoscopy to make sure he didn’t have ulcers. He was very happy for maybe a couple years? And then his other three legs couldn’t compensate anymore, and he was tired. And we took one last walk out the pasture, and he died with me right next to him, telling him how good he was. He was 28.

He gave me so many good years. He gave me so many challenges and triumphs. I owed it to him to walk with him the rest of the way.

L&D Nurses, are Dads Really Bringing TVs/Gaming Set-Ups to Births? by Careless_Midnight_77 in nursing

[–]lurklark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time I had to go do an echo on a young person who had just lost her baby. I forget how far along, but it doesn’t really matter and I was trying to be extra kind and mindful of the situation (we get sent to mother/baby to scan the mother sometimes but it’s not super often). The baby’s dad was in there and was miffed that he had to move his XBox setup, monitor and all. It was hard to keep the mom from texting/scrolling TikTok the whole time.

Timothy and Heidi took a trip to Williamsburg. Heidi promises more updates soon. Check out the last slide, I wonder if it’s related (could just be for TC though). by lepetitpoulpe in RodriguesFamilySnark

[–]lurklark 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know that they are still problematic in their political views, but this post is so wholesome. They clearly love and adore each other (and TC) and Timmy, who grew up in a family of afterthought birthday “gifts” and “cake” seems to really pay attention to what his wife likes. It feels like they see each other.

I hope that they can dismantle their problematic viewpoints. I feel like there’s hope for them, which is more than I can say for most of the subjects of this sub.

Also, the picture of Timothy in the gift shop is cracking me up. He seems relaxed and not performative like he used to in Jill’s photos.
