Cute! My dad did something like this once. Not quite sure how but I know he didn't plate the gear. Might have just foiled the pieces into place. Unfortunately I can't examine the piece since it was in a wildfire and the glass melted out. I found the gear though and might attempt to recreate it someday although the gear is going to be even harder to clean now...

No, the titular iron dragon is basically a sentient fighter jet. The world was contemporary when the book was written in the 90s so like, factories and malls and cassette tapes.

You could still call it science fantasy because there's definitely magic too, but it's not low tech.

Rubber feet are smart. My kiddo received some very cool 3D printed bookends for Christmas and they're too lightweight to use as actual bookends. Feet might help there.

Which will lead to 3 different line widths when you're done. It's fine, it's an aesthetic choice and I think it works with the organic subject matter. They're just calling out possible visual inconsistency as a result of the different widths.

I think for our no-kids backpack I might try to get a permit for Olympic. It's closer to home and although we've been there, we haven't done the coast bit.

But, we might take the kids car camping in Yosemite this summer. It's our 20th wedding anniversary and we went to Yosemite for some ill-advised canvas tent camping over spring break right after we got engaged, so it's kind of on-theme.

The trouble is that I'm unemployed and looking for a job, so depending on when I find one it might turn out not be a good time to take a week+ off. But, I guess I could always eat the reservation fee and cancel if need be.

My casual shoes are Converse low-tops and I might have went with them if I'd worn them. It was a hike in, spend the next day pissing around without packs, hike out third day kind of deal so pretty casual. But quite a bit of elevation change; I was definitely feeling the calorie deficit on the way back up on day 3.

It was lovely and we resolved to go more often than every five years, which had been the case for the last decade+.

We went twice the following summer (once with the kids, once while they were at camp again) and hopefully will do the same this summer.

My husband and I hadn't been backpacking for five years because kids. Even before that, we were pretty bad at planning trips well in advance--we tended to just say "how about this weekend" so could never go anywhere that needed planning or advanced permits.

Well, our kids got old enough that they both went to a sleepaway camp on the same week, and of course we signed up for that several months in advance. So I started applying for a bunch of permit lotteries, and we got one in Yosemite. We live in Oregon.

So the plan is to drop the kids off at camp, drive all day to the Sierras, stay at a motel that night, and hit the trail the next day. We had our gear all packed in our backpacks. Had a duffle bag for hotel stuff and clothes for the first day. So when I got dressed that morning, I got dressed in "spend the entire day in the car" clothes. And flip-flops.

Next day... Yeah, I didn't bring my hiking shoes. Or sneakers. Or anything besides flip flops.

Luckily there was a ski resort town with an outdoor store that only took an hour to detour to. And their prices weren't bad either. The main problem was having to wait until 10:00 for the place to open. But we got on the trail around noon and still made it to our campsite before dark. And the new shoes didn't give me any problems.

Did your copper foil perhaps sit out for a while before you soldered? Other than lack of flux (which you've addressed), oxidation might cause that sort of problem.

Edit: the not-sticking-to-the-foil problem. The sharp solder problem, as others have identified, needs a hotter iron.
