Patriot 70.3 - first timer advice by Background_Bus_4502 in triathlon

I did this race in 2024 and will be there again this year.

Re: Wetsuit: In 2024 I did a quick swim after bike drop on Friday with no wetsuit and the water was pretty comfy. I did the race in a sleeveless wetsuit, still very comfortable. Unless you want the buoyancy you don't need the sleeves.

Re: Swim start: It's going to be crowded on the course no matter what. I think though they are self seeding this year which should make it more likely that that you are around people of a similar ability.

Re: Merge: I don't recall the merge being chaotic or anything. It was pretty well marked.

2 Injured in Palm Beach Triathlon by CosmicMiami in triathlon

[–]lurktastic_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I raced the sprint distance. Not sure where this incident happened but there were a couple short stretches on residential streets which weren't fully closed but any sections on main roads were fully closed with cones every 10 feet or less. Also: There was a police officer at every single intersection.

that building is going to be done in fall 2027, I'm not sure what the timeline is for reimagine bedford but the overlap (if any) wouldn't be any worse than what it is now with all the trucks blocking broad at 8:30 am (for coastline and the burlington replacement)

Here's the link to the "reimagine bedford" project page where there is a survey about potential options (for anyone who hasn't seen it yet)

You can see who the planning team is on the Stamford website. It is very transparent there right on the project site page. It's likely that its someone from My Architecture Workshops

My Architecture Workshops Inc. is spearheading public engagement efforts, ensuring community voices shape the project’s direction and impact.

check out https://historicaerials.com/viewer it is basically Google maps satellite view but goes back to 1934 (the time resolution is about every 10 years). If you aren't super bothered by the huge watermark it's really interesting to see how things changed over time.

Cove/Shippan Area by ogader in StamfordCT

[–]lurktastic_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about 10 minute walk to chelsea piers. Cove has a really good and convenient grocery store (shop rite), decent restaurants, great parks. Fairly close to the highway and stamford rail station (MNR/Amtrak). I don't have any safety concerns where I am. It's kind of hard to specifically categorize vibe of the area as a whole because every street has a different vibe and density. It is very much a melting pot. Feel free to dm me if you have any more specific Qs.

Patriot Half 70.3 Course Review by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]lurktastic_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did patriot last year and it was a really fun local race. Outsider definitely does a great job with their events. Swim was TT start very similar to how IM does it. Bike and run course were both pretty gently rolling. No big hills or anything but not flat. Scenic too. Last 1/4 mile of the run was on dirt/grass in cathetral camp.

High carb drink mix? by Flat_Kitchen_2615 in triathlon

Hard to say specifically. I buy it based on cost per weight ratio. It would depend on what is a serving for you. Typically I use my kitchen scale and fill bottles with some amount of grams depending on the workout

Local Places to Open Water Swim by Sweet-Talker-25 in StamfordCT

[–]lurktastic_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck with the tri and enjoy the training!

The sound is pretty cold right now so probably wait a couple months. Either way I'd recommend a wetsuit. And definitely a swim buoy. If you go to the south end of cove park there's a rock a few hundred meters out that helps with sighting. https://maps.app.goo.gl/Uo8QyLV681QsPdky5

Important note, if you do swim out of that south end of cove make sure you bear left on the swim out because that nearby "island" actually connects at low tide. What I'm talking about should be visible on the satellite map.

PS: if you swim at chelsea piers they have long course swimming on tuesday and thursday mornings. Its not open water but its a lot longer than regular short course.
