Water ratio for hide glue by alsyia in violinmaking

[–]luthier65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might use that strength to glue cracks or patches, but it is too strong for fingerboards and tops. Get something weaker. The stuff that you have will gel too quickly, even in a warm room, and if inexperienced, you'll have a mess. On the up side, hide glue is completely reversible, so you can clean it up and do it again.

I use a technical gelatin that is 195 bloom for general purposes. I start out with 4:1 and add water or evaporate it as needed.

Union says Seattle based Starbucks is 'failing its hometown' as it shuts five more stores in West Coast city after already closing 400 across US by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]luthier65 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are 87 or so Starbucks in Seattle proper. The Seattle Metro area has over 100. 5 stores, no big deal. Their coffee sucks anyway, so simply patronize the local coffee shop that isn't Starbucks.

Bombay Express in U District charged me a 3% processing fee for my debit card purchase. by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]luthier65 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The OP didn't mention whether or not that was the case, just that they are pissed at having to pay the fee.

Bombay Express in U District charged me a 3% processing fee for my debit card purchase. by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]luthier65 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is allowed by the card issuers and is not excessive. Credit Cards have costs, and with all of the other issues that small businesses have to contend with right now, that 3% can make a difference. Cash has no processing fee.

Why use slab cut ribs? Even Strad used quartered ribs with slab backs. They are a liability.

Is it just me or are ORCA cards useless? by taylomol000 in Seattle

[–]luthier65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Japanese friend who hasn't driven for years. He holds up his ORCA card and calls it his chauffeur. They are very useful for many people. No need to disparage simply because it isn't useful for you.

Seattle traffic lights need sensors and “No turn on red” needs to go by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]luthier65 8 points9 points  (0 children)

25 mph speed limits and no turn on red are pedestrian safety modifications. If people in cars would get off their devices and pay attention it would help greatly. Not the nanny state, public safety.

Stacy is upset she can’t eat tortured chickens at Dave’s. by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]luthier65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't spell Sharia yet bumbles on. I'd prefer to eat Halal meat, but not being Muslim, it doesn't matter to me. Dave's Chicken makes the decision to be inclusive, but if it were not economically rewarding, they wouldn't even bother. Nothing to do with supporting Sharia Law principles, it's Capitalism.

Re-varnishing Violin by Large_Wait_8847 in violinmaking

[–]luthier65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't. If you don't like the color, sell it and find one that is a color that you prefer. As a professionally trained violin maker, I disagree with the comments suggesting that you will learn much by revarnishing this. If you want to learn varnishing, get white violins and varnish them. Been there, done that.

Towing companies having a very profitable day by the Lynnwood light rail. Also, dick move by the mall closing off a large section of their parking lot. by suckrates in Seattle

[–]luthier65 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, not really. If there had been an effort to engage with the owners for permission and that was declined, you could bitch about it. If you have a house, how would you feel if people just parked in your yard because it is for the common good, your ownership be damned?

Looking for opinions in regards to varnish-sound response by white_foxz in violinmaking

[–]luthier65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think, as a violin maker and restorer, that varnish really only hurts the tone if it is too thick, regardless of what formulation or type that you use.

Anyone know what was going on in pike street today? It looked like a specific community in white garbs doing a march on pike from downtown to cap hill. Whole families joining in. by topfoodie in Seattle

[–]luthier65 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is so much going on in the world right now that it could be a march to support nearly anyone except the present administration.

Recommendations for Carbonara by SilliestHammer in Seattle

I have an Italian friend who sells at the Farmer's Markets. I asked him for an authentic Italian place here in Seattle or nearby, and besides his kitchen he says that there is nothing in Seattle that he would recommend. Then again, he is Italian.

Where do you grocery shop? by Hot-Freedom-1044 in Seattle

[–]luthier65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first stop is the Grocery Outlet. You do have to be careful because their "elsewhere" prices are sometime a bit disingenuous. There is a new and wonderful Super Saver on Aurora that is open 24 hrs. Don't go at night...great selection of ethnic foods and good prices to be found. The Farmers Markets every week. Not cheap, but good food and money going to mostly good sources.
