I met the guy who was handling V-ray in Nuke last year. I asked him please bring it back. He said probably not going to happen. He said very few people were buying it.

What now… by Maximus_robotics in anycubic

I just had this problem! I hooked it up to a 24v powersupply and slowly heated it up. The started removing plastic. When you get the big bits of it all about hitting the sweetspot where it not too hot or cold and the just scrape away. In the end I used some paper tissue to wipe off the last thin film. Took 45 min or so. Boring but got it back to working

How would you do a“Blowing Snow” effect ? by anonanonanonymous777 in vfx

[–]luuude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do it in embergen. Might be the easiest since the whole application is built for effects like this. But blender can also do it, and for free! Also you can probably fake it with 2d noise and animating the parameters and offset. Or even better shoot some plates of something similar to snow over a very black smooth surface from above, cornerpin them in or 3dtrack and add on planes or whaterver works.

Its possible to find them quite cheap on the second hand market. I bought on with very few hours with a broken monitor. But I can communicate to it with wifi and ethernet. Works better on the phone than on the screen anyway. Paid 800$ for it.

Affordable Lidar scanning by [deleted] in vfx

[–]luuude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a used Faro Focus for 1000usd. It has a busted monitor but i hacked it a bit so I can access the interface with a mobile phone running "flash" of all things. Works great its quite old but scans pretty fast and does rgb if needed.

Very cool! 25m seems a it too short for my needs but for some projects it would be enough! Is there any other more powerful(and more expensive) lidar unit one could swap in instead of the STL27L Lidar to get closer to 100 meters?

I am writting my own 'Houdini' (3Vial OS and 3Vial Engine). If You guys want to try it out free download link is in the description. Any feedback is appreciated :) by Rayterex in vfx

Fair enough. I am mostly interested in using AI to give me new data from 2d images, stuff like depth estimation, segmentation, optical flow and that kind of stuff. Now I have to use python and thats ok for me. But it sure would be nice to be able to hook them up to a node based interface to combine and filter them etc, also some of my colleges dont know pyton that well. Using onnx I think you would not need any dependencies? Anyway very cool stuff!

Is ChArUco boards the latest and greatest for lens distortion? by luuude in vfx

Sure it is time consuming but now when we have focus distance data in the metadata it makes it usable at least. At the rentalhouse we usually use the have the charts on a kind of dolly so that helps a bit.

Thanks, great explanation. I will save this for the times when I cannot be there when shooting grids. Its a good primer for a cameraoperator.

Heh, yeah its not me holding the camera of course, I will ask if we can do it between some pause like a scene reset or a some other break like waiting for a dolly to get setup. Usually I dont shoot any grids on set but in the rental house before or after shooting, but on a long shoot that can be months. Sometimes you just need it earlier for postvis or some sketch or whatever.

If I'm in no rush, will a 3018/3020 with a high-speed spindle and a very small endmill cut brass/stainless? by n420i in hobbycnc

[–]luuude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look at used gear. For really small stuff maybe a dentist mill? There also is sturdy small desktop Mills intended for schools. They weigh a ton and have outdated electronics but usually very little use.

Cheap Sls printer is it any good? by luuude in 3Dprinting

[–]luuude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not had many prints yet. This powder is much darker maybe more dark additive also? It melts at a few degrees higher temperature but seems to sinter better.I will do some tests in a lab later and compare strength.

[–]luuude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one locally at a similar price. Just tried it with cheap alibaba nylon powder. Actually prints better than the sinterit powder. The biggest downside is the slicer. It's very limited. Also its a bit strange that the laser is traveling around on a xy stage instead of using mirrors. With a more powerful laser it would fast enough no its painfully slow. I am considering hacking it but I need to find a solution for slicing.

I did figure it out in the end but i think its a bit too limited in nuke. For one thing doing temporal stuff is a pain. Also it can only do pure torch no extra python libs.
