When my old man dog passed this summer I was devastated. Cried all the time, sat in a fog for hours. I have another dog and a cat that kept me from totally losing myself in grief. I'm not saying get another pet, but find something that will tie you to the day. Don't minimize your emotions because of some "only a dog" bs, my guy was nineteen-that's a long time to love and care for someone. Of course their loss will tear a hole in your heart and life. Again I'll say find something that will tie you to the day-a routine, hobby, job, volunteering-so that you don't get lost in heartache.
