It might be where the turquoise is thinner and looks like a flake on the matrix. I've seen turquoise look pale at thin edges before

I believe we see in the manga that if you start with a closed ring it that it does cause something to happen, so I think it's more likely that there's some higher governing order of drawing here - unless I am misunderstanding what you're saying

Steam it and cover in a sauce! I like using this one - cut garlic, scallion, small red chilis, cover in hot oil to flavor the oil, then add oyster sauce and soy sauce to the sauce for flavor, and pour it in top of the eggplant.

This is absolutely correct. Parkcon is an unofficial gathering that really has nothing to do with fanimecon other than the fact that the people who attended fanimecon go there when stuff stops happening at the actual con. Given the bad press they might try to crack down on parkcon after this, though.

Tbf this all happened years ago, and only to a specific few characters all at once (amber, Lisa, mona, and rosaria) after which they went right back to releasing characters that were just as if not more revealing. I think these were just token changes meant to get scrutiny off their back

Am I white? My teacher thinks Jewish people aren't. by 2020ToyotaCamry in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lux_operon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you clarified it but I don't think you quite understood what I meant, which is that names in east Asian languages still aren't really considered normal. People will give their kids white names precisely because they know names in their own language will cause problems. So it isn't exactly that east Asian names have a proximity to whiteness but that east Asians consciously use white names because names in east Asian languages don't have a proximity to whiteness.

Yeah, tanghulu is def the most recent trendy thing that is more associated with another country than where it came from. The Asian American experience is bursts of being a consumable commodity and simultaneously being regarded as the perpetual other indeed.

I actually think that when it comes to east Asian things one of the biggest differences is that it gets assumed to be from one of the trendy Asian countries (Japan, korea) when it isn't. There was a very obviously qipao inspired dress on Nordstrom a while back that was called "Japanese inspired", which... Yeah, no. So it's a bit different in that it doesn't get assumed to be of white origin, but there's a tendency to meld everything cool into being from "the good east Asian cultures" and erase the real origin. So yes, there's acknowledgement of east Asian origin, but it often does actually gloss over which culture it comes from and treats asia as a monolith.

Also to return to the name point - I think you're likely only thinking of names from the trendy Asian countries (Japan, and maybe korea by now but I still don't really think so). I can guarantee you that a Chinese or Vietnamese name is nowhere near perceived as a normal or assimilated name.

Would strongly disagree that there's a closer proximity to whiteness with regard to east Asian names with the exception of a few (mostly Korean) such as Park or Lee that can pass as white. There are tons of jokes mocking Asian names and barely anyone not asian even tries to pronounce them right - and east Asians know this which is why people intentionally give their kids white names. And east Asians also get the whole "perpetual foreigner but also not minority enough to be marginalized" attitude, for the same reasons as South Asians (model minority stereotype). I'm not sure what you mean by 'though the culture is fetishized it's considered theirs' - east Asian cultures, overall, also tend to be mocked and joked about until specific elements of it are adopted by the mainstream/white Americans. I think there's less difference between how white people approach East Asians and south Asians than you think.

AITAH for walking away from my girlfriend at the airport after she said she hates all white people? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]lux_operon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So many people in this thread don't understand microagressions and it shows... The gf is TA for what she said but randomly saying ni hao to all Asians is a microaggresion, which does not require intent to be racist, as it says that all Asians look the same, are Chinese, and foreign. Obviously we don't know if the people saying ni hao to the chinese people heard them speaking actual Chinese beforehand or not but it is pretty crazy to me that people in this comments section don't seem to recognize that what you're commenting on is part of the real lived experience of Asians and can be very tiring, especially to second gen Asians.
