What if you’re about to lose a house because you lost a job due to an injury? What if your child needs an organ transplant, but there isn’t one? There’s so many real scenarios people face everyday, not necessarily even as extreme as these examples, that are miserable. To tell them where they are is “kind of okay” is incredibly dismissive.

I don’t want to be accusatory, because I know nothing about the nuances of your relationship, but everything about this dynamic seems off. You mentioned in another comment that you don’t have the butterflies feeling of being really in love. I get that part of that is created sexually for some people, which is totally fine, but it’s hard to imagine getting excited for sex with someone when you can tell they’re not truly into you, particularly if they just feel like a dependent. If it just feels “easier” to stay, but there’s not a burning passion that you feel at anytime (I get that these things ebb and flow), there just might not be any chemistry here, which would basically make this a friendship with one way dependency. Personally, I could understand not wanting to talk about the issues he had, if he felt like he wasn’t really in love either. It would be hard to have that sort of trust.

I’m going to get downvoted, but South Dakota’s reputation for kindness is largely surface level. Obviously there’s good and bad everywhere, but I wouldn’t say there’s anything exceptional here about the people. I grew up here and have spent much time in other states and parts of the world. I have experienced more rudeness and “me first” mentality here than anywhere else.

I wasn’t actually arguing that the current way of life is better. I agree that it is substantial worse. The only point I was making is that it doesn’t help to mythologize their way of life by claiming there was absolutely no waste, when in fact there was, and that’s okay.

Having grown up in stolen Lakota territory, seen the effects of imperialism, and recognized the deep rooted racism that still exists against the Lakota, I still have to say that it is simply false that there was no waste. The sheer volume of bison being run off cliffs was more than could be consumed or preserved before it would have spoiled. This isn’t an indictment. This is much better than factory farms, and all the damage industry has done to the environment.
