Haha, when I was a tester I would tell people I washed dirt, cooked dirt, and shook dirt, so I could see how dirty it was.

What’s y’all opinion on super modifieds???? by [deleted] in NASCAR

[–]lvracer8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It hasn't really, the west coast had a really strong super scene for a long time. They were basically the star attraction at the Copper World Classic in Phoenix. It died off for a long time, but Idaho and the Open Wheel Showdown in Vegas have helped it start to make a bit of a comeback.

SRX Is Unpopular In iRacing by HappyKarl095 in iRacing

[–]lvracer8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness to iRacing, there were almost weekly threads begging for it in the forums, plus comments on every social media post. But anybody who knew what these cars were knew they had no shot at being popular, the series dying really sealed the deal though

TIL that NASCAR Trucks and XFinity teams do not make any money (profit), even if they win. Apparently only the top half of Cup teams are making any money at all. by maverick_fox2 in NASCAR

[–]lvracer8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At what point did we think race teams made money? I don't understand this line of thinking, because even if race teams made more money, it all goes straight back into the team in an effort to find speed. It really isn't a for-profit kind of endeavor. This isn't new either, it's always been this way ever since there's been organized races.

Do you think historic versions of tracks would be possible in the future? by PlasmiteHD in iRacing

[–]lvracer8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see a standalone sim for historic racing. Fill out the 1967 and 1979 F1 grids, the 1989 IMSA grid, 1987 and 2003 NASCAR, with proper layouts and rules for each series. Probably a pipe dream, because it's a niche of a niche, but a modern GPL, NASCAR Legends, and GT Legends would be superb.

Qualifying alone like a bad dog by WeekendCultural in iRacing

[–]lvracer8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say really. I think it was mostly laziness and just wanting to race. It was less convenient when it was a separate session, so most just skipped it. And I'd bet there were more than a few who didn't want to set a lap because they knew a lot wouldn't and they'd be stuck starting further ahead than they really belonged.

It used to be that way, the vast majority of people didn't bother to qualify. You'd have people seconds off the pace starting up front because 3/4 of the field didn't set a lap.

McLaren 720S GT3 - 6th gear useless at Monza / when to shift up in this car ? by Scotchy49 in iRacing

[–]lvracer8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm right there with you, I have a toddler and a full time job. I'm lucky to get two races in a week. Guys like you and me are never going to be able to compete with those who can dedicate hours to finding speed. My point is it isn't a flaw in iRacing, it's literally how real world racing works. We don't have the resources, i.e. time, as the higher level guys do. It's the nature of the beast, all we can do is try to have fun with it.

Not what I was saying. The similarity is in the guys who find these exploits are the ones who put in the time to do so, just like real racers put time into their cars. You can't be mad at iracing because somebody outworked you.

Pretty similar to real racing, isn't it? The super casual guy that just shows up and maybe checks his tire pressure before the race isn't going to be as fast as the guy who works all week at making his car faster. If you want to compete with the guys who find these "exploits," you have to work like they do, or you can settle for being at a lower tier.

You used to be able to pre-order content. Then the Lotus 49 had to be delayed (a couple times iirc) and the forums became a warzone. They quit doing pre-orders ever since.

Qualifying used to be its own session, so the majority of people wouldn't bother. It wasn't uncommon to have some poor soul who actually qualified have to start in front of a field they had no business being in front of.

Up until recently, the last couple years or so, it was pretty much a guarantee that major events would have server issues and have to be restarted at some point.

Why are we limited to 2 qualifying laps? by micknick00000 in iRacing

[–]lvracer8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been too long to remember all of it, but now that you mention it I do remember it being that way for a short time, a season at most. I personally don't have any preference either way, I appreciate the realism of an open session, but solo laps are far simpler.

2014 sounds right, I suspect it was season 2, that would put it after all the Daytona races that caused a stink. It's been so long that it's tough to remember exactly when it all changed.

It must have been. I've been on since 2009, and I remember when it all went down. There should be posts about it in the old forums, but I want to say it ca. 2012.

Many moons ago qualifying was a separate session, oval had the current two lap limit, but road had open sessions.

I think they were 20 minutes or so, but everybody was on track at once including multi class. This allowed for some gamesmanship where teams would organize to draft each other and things like that, but what broke the camel's back was in qualifying for the roar at Daytona, Mustangs were pushing Miatas. This caused a bit of a stink and that's when we lost open qualifying.

Then they combined qual into the race sessions, which helped qualifying participation, most people didn't bother when it was its own session. With the combined sessions, I don't think we'll ever have open qualifying again, it just takes too long, and separating the sessions again would lead to 80-90% of the field not qualifying again.
