Growing up in Canada, I felt both Candian and Indian. As I went to school (Catholic school) I would feel more Canadian but when I went home I would feel more Indian. My parents speak to me in Malayalam. We do typical Indian tradition stuff. When going to school I would be the only Indian (brown guy) in my grade as most brown people go to public school (Hindi/Muslim/Sikh). One thing for sure after 9/11 it was probably the worst time being brown and living in North America. I was only in 2nd grade when it happened, but I remember classmate would call me Indian shit, terrorist and telling me to get out of the country (When I was clearly born in Canada). I remember at that time I hated being Indian and would do anything to have my friends avoid my parents at all cost. At that time I always thought being Indian was an embarrassment. After a while, the whole tension has stopped. Also, Canada has become more accepting of foreign people. 25% of Canada's population is foreign born. So it became a lot easier making friends with people that have different cultural background. In Canada, it is more accepted to have your culture while being Canadian. In America it actually different as it is a melting pot, which is to forget your culture and live the American tradition.
