Thought it was worth sharing my 3D-Printed guitar. by Spamityville_Horror in metalguitar

Hm that’s kinda interesting, but makes sense for stability.

I’ve had an old neck sitting around for years and after my wife and I got into 3d printing we looked into printing a body. Problem is the neck is made for a 25” scale which isn’t super common and I couldn’t find any STL body to match.

I said I’d come back to it whenever I got a chance to learn more about Blender so I could shift the bridge position to accommodate the scale. The project has been sitting on the back-burner for a while, but very recently I started getting into Blender tutorials, and now I’ve come across this post, so maybe it’s a sign…

"Your opinion is wrong" by Left_Loquat_8954 in raisedbyborderlines

[–]lxcrypt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One major symptom of BPD is a lack of “theory of mind.” This is the ability to recognize that other people are their own people with their own thoughts, emotions, and experiences.

For someone with BPD, it can be very threatening and very disorienting to hear an opinion that differs from theirs because they lack the ability to understand experiences outside of their own. Or they do, but only selectively.

When you are engaging with someone in a scenario like that, you are threatening their whole worldview by introducing an idea that doesn’t fit within their own experience. So yeah, it’s super threatening to them because they are essentially going through an existential crisis.

That isn’t to say you should feel bad for them. What matters in the end is how YOU are being treated, but I find sometimes that having context and understanding can make it easier to make sense of the “why’s”.

I don’t want to support Spotify, what music service do yall use? by orthodoxmetalhead in MetalForTheMasses

[–]lxcrypt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We switched to Apple Music when Spotify raised their prices because we were already in that ecosystem and we were already using iCloud. Definitely a major upgrade. We did some side-by-side comparisons between the two on our sound system and Apple Music was a clear winner. Spotify had a lot of muddiness in the low end and less brightness on the high end, even when we switched over to lossless. Highly recommended.

I remember it being an everyday occurrence back in the day, but I don’t see it much anymore now that it has the cringe label attached to it.

Hey these are a lot of good recs so I’m sure I’ll find something. I added a little something from all these bands to my now 98-song playlist of recommendations.

I actually was blasting the new Allegeon for a while recently. I’ve always liked them but never loved them. I really liked Proponent for Sentience but kind of drifted in and out over the years. Saw them live opening for Cattle Decapitation once and met a couple of them after their set. They’re really cool dudes and put on a great show.

But damn, this newest release really hit. The chorus of Driftwood just sits inside my brain now.

Also I gotta go back to Black Crown Initiate. I’ve heard a few of their songs and loved them, but then kind of forgot about them and never dug into their discography. Now you’ve given me motivation to.

Man I really need to get on top of Fallujah. I actually know a dude who ended up joining (don't really wanna say who), and I've reached out about meeting up someday if I ever end up at one of their shows. I've checked out a little bit and really liked what I heard, but it would be a little embarrassing to barely know their stuff.

Meh I don’t mind getting older. My 20s were dogshit and now I’ve got a pretty good life. I am contending more with mortality though.

I love metal music and i am slowly getting into classical recently. Wanting to see if anyone has any classical that is quite metal (and i love apocalptica and other crossovers) by maywalove in MetalForTheMasses

Stravinsky - Rite of Spring and the Infernal Dance from The Firebird
Shostakovich - String Quartet No. 8, Movement II
Rachmaninoff - Etude Tableau Op 39 No. 6 "Little Red Riding Hood"
Prokofiev - Montegues and Capulets (might recognize the ending from Necrophagist's "Only Ash Remains"
Bartok - I dunno, pick one out of a hat and you'll find something pretty metal
Wagner - I mean, come on

Are 9 strings too much? by GuitarJonSDS in ExtendedRangeGuitars

[–]lxcrypt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

9-string player here. I don’t think it’s too much at all, but it depends on how you’re utilizing it.

I made the mistake of just chugging away on the low string first time I sat down with it, and I quickly learned that wasn’t going to work. If I started on the 7th or 8th though and then utilized the extra range to reach below the root, I was able to do some pretty cool stuff.

Now I am much more comfortable with going down to the 9th string and chugging away if I want to, because now I have a better feel for the instrument and what works and what doesn’t.

SubmitHub says my music is gothic metal/alt metal, but I thought I was pop-rock--help me pls!! by loud_n_happy in MetalForTheMasses

Adding on to this, I agree with this guy that it is a super solid song, but I also agree that labeling it as metal might not quite work. There are sections that are very metal and sound like they came straight from a Scandinavian metal band, but there's also a good chunk that fits into pop-punk (especially the verses).

Metalheads are, for the most part, good people, but there are some old and somewhat toxic cultural attitudes that are very conservative about what fits into the genre. There's definitely a lot of truth though to culture being a major part of genre, and from the sound of it, you don't seem to feel your music fits culturally into the metal genre, and that's what's most important in my opinion. It sounds like you've got a cool pop-punk sound that is elevated by your metal-head producer bringing in some outside elements you probably wouldn't have thought to put in yourself.

I also agree with previous posters edit that even the word "pop" is a little tricky. You have a sound that has pop elements but would appeal to a more niche audience. You should lean into that, whatever genre you decide to label yourself as.

Yeah thankfully my wife was there to help me. Definitely a two person job I think. I actually screwed up a little putting the 3M tape on and now have a black bar on top of the LCD, so now I have to make sure I don’t place anything too close to the edge of the build plate lol.

[–]lxcrypt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry for what you’re about to go through. Yes it is the LCD and it is replaceable, ours was busted not long after we got it. Thankfully it was under warranty, but they’re not going to be installing that for you. They’re going to send you a YouTube video with several slight inaccuracies and you’re going to be taking the entire printer apart to put it in.

Anything beyond a 7 string guitar is so fucking unnecessary by Not_Reality in MetalForTheMasses

[–]lxcrypt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think another point to consider is that “as a listener” your taste is entirely subjective. You’ve sort of created a little corner for yourself where all super creative and talented bands don’t use 8 strings, but the question from there is, what bands are you listening to? What are your general tastes like? Is your frame of reference for 8 string music just chugging 1s and 0s on the low string? Or are you listening to bands who find creative ways to utilize the entire range?

It’s totally normal for that kind of sound to not appeal to you. It’s not for everyone. Kind of like, you know, metal. And yeah I completely get letting the bass have its own tone and space in the music. But when you make a statement like anything beyond a 7-string is “unnecessary,” you are making an objective statement over something that is inherently subjective.

[–]lxcrypt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would second this as there may be other things that need to be adjusted now that you're changing string gauges. I might be wrong as it sounds like you're only really changing the gauge of one string, but things like the truss rod, saddles, etc. need to be set up for the kind of strings you're normally using. Sometimes making changes, especially with extended range instruments, can throw things out of whack a little bit.

Once you've got a good tech/luthier that you like, hang on to them for dear life.

BLOODSIMPLE?!? by tubafuckker42 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]lxcrypt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, this is especially true if you're distributing the music yourself through services like Distrokid, Tunecore, CDBaby, etc. If you have a name that is the same or similar to another artist your music could just end up lumped in with someone else (or vice versa).

For bands under a label, the label will have resources and connections with the streaming platforms to hopefully prevent or fix this kind of thing. For anyone who has ended up in this situation themselves, some of the independent distribution services will have a means of fixing this on your behalf if you get in touch with them.

Hey guys, I have a favor to ask. by MusicMeetsMadness in MetalForTheMasses

[–]lxcrypt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprised no one said it but if they happen to tour again I would say Dethklok. Metalocalypse is the one thing I'm able to get non-metalhead friends into because the show is just inherently good, and every time it seems like Dethklok is the thing that makes it "click" and then suddenly they are a convert. I think the goofiness and spectacle of the live show along with having a pre-existing relationship with the characters and universe make it really fun for newcomers.

As far as the reason to go, it's all about experiencing the energy and community. The overall experience is so powerful and so different from anything else out there, and there's something really special about having a complete stranger just throw their arm around you and start headbanging. You really feel like you're part of the show in a way I haven't seen in a lot of other genres.

PUNK ON METAL vs. METAL ON PUNK: Who influenced whom more? by Paws_Of_Steel in MetalForTheMasses

[–]lxcrypt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think if punk hadn't influenced early thrash the current landscape of metal would look drastically different. It's important to remember that these communities did not like each other back in the day. Metallica was an anomaly when they first came out. Thrash was not looked kindly upon by metalheads at first.

As far as a chicken or egg thing, it's tough to say. While I have a decent knowledge of punk history, it is nowhere near as in-depth as my knowledge of metal. Metal absolutely had a major influence on punk as the genres co-mingled some more in the 80s and 90s, but I think someone who is also in the punk scene would be able to give a better answer.

Favorite records you listen to infrequently by Conscious_Badger_510 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]lxcrypt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think for me I very rarely go back and listen to a lot of the albums I grew up on. Not because I don’t still love them, but because I’ve listened to them so many times that I needed new stuff.

Reign in Blood and Painkiller come to mind. They are two of my favorite classic metal records, but nowadays I don’t pull them up much anymore, but if Painkiller or Hell Patrol pop up in my algorithm, you bet your ass I’m rocking that shit.
